  1. As much as I agree with you I don't think Rudd would be interested at the moment.Julia is on her way out and Kevin thinks he is in the box seat to take over.

Interestingly when you talk to travel agents here(Melbourne)they say there is no problem with the jet ski operators and tuk tuks in Phukett or Patong. They even suggest it is ok to

leave your' passport with them. I have a photo copy of my passport and if any motor bike or car hire mob don't accept that then I move on to another one.

Same with me.You hand over your passport you've lost all power.

  2. They picked 7 out of more than 70 provinces that just happened to have daily incomes already approaching a whopping 300 b/day. And thats in 2012. Isan will get nothing out of this wage promise. Yingluck will probably be gone before they get a rise. Billionaire isnt she ?

    Undoubtedly, she is.

In just one solitary transaction she netted nearly that much.

When the family sold its flagship Shin Corp. to Singapore’s Temasek Holdings Pte for 73 billion baht ($2.4 billion) in 2006, Yingluck netted 985 million baht.

    Bloomberg BusinessWeek - June 16, 2011

How much tax paid on that i wonder.

  3. What that editorial says ?

That we had a military coup, 5 years of almost incessant riots, half of the nation ready to kill the other half for what ?

    A controversial land deal ?

Because at the end, if you remove all the obviously politically motivated court actions, at the end without real legal basis, that's all what is left.

    A controversial land deal !

A pre-meditated unlawful and highly illegal land deal.. her land deal had nothing to do with the coup, although Khun Thaksin thought he was untouchable then..and that may have brought about the coup.. now Thaksin and all his merry band of followers think they too are untouchable.. just look at the way the Red Shirts are acting... only in Thailand.... but with this new government acting the way it has started, soon I will be getting 45 bahts to my one dollar .... and that smells of roses to me.. Thailands demise back to a Banana Republic... and us Farangs getting rich..! Rock on Yinluck

Agreed,I'm hanging on to my Oz $.Do you rekon Thaksin has got his money in thai baht?Every country heavily taxes oil products, but Thailand reduces tax,who is right.Good for a short time but what about the future.Watch those tankers heading over the borders.

  4. At last, the truth is starting to emerge, many of us already knew this but the blinkered few on here still believed otherwise, and no doubt will go on believing otherwise.

It's funny the "truth"emerges after a change of government.Who are they sucking up to now and how weak to kowtow to so called pressure. It's all part of the whitewashing process which will allow big bro. to come back and not go to prison,or face charges of incitement. If there are no consequences, history will be repeated.

  5. each tablet will cost no more than Bt3,000 and its use-life should range from three to four years.

How many times can it be dropped before it breaks? How long before water damage occurs? For the price I don't think there is going to be the durability and build quality that is needed for daily use by young kids. Mobile phones are pretty rugged and can take a lot of abuse. Then again there has been a lot of r&d over the years to get to this stage. The tablets are still relatively new and delicate. I will be surprised if 50% are still working after 1 year.

How long before it's down the pawn shop?

  6. off course we have rights: the rights to spend (most of your) money, pay taxes, social security and beg each year that your stay might get extended for another 12 months

no more money (400k in the bank) or job and it's bye bye for you

    even you have wife/children/condo/car/...

I think if we farang do not get any rights and threated like 2nd class citizen, our home countries would repay Thais by not allowing them to buy land, leave country if not enough $$ every year on their bankaccount, have no jobs...

that would be called: EQUAL rights

You knew the rules when you sat into the game. What ever possed you to think they were going to change them.

    .

I don't know what country you are from but I am betting it is not easy for a Thai to get a retirement visa there. Heck just to get a visitors visa for a Thai to North America is not that easy to do.

Spot on,some people don't know how lucky they are, whinge, whinge, whinge.

  7. Thanks guys, I will try and get a copy of the notice and post it, but it looks like another holiday for me, I don't mind I love it there!!

Remember, she is a tourist. The visa is not intended to get to know you better.Word your application differently, and apply again, they can only say no and shows you are detirmined. Also, who wants to go to Blighty at xmas.

  8. well he pretended to die so hang the scamming Bastard!!! Then come to Chiang Rai and get the rest of the fiddlers! the ones who say they are resident in the UK but are here and claiming housing allowance..The ones who have split the profits with the landlord or are saying they live with their family!!! Who said you had to be a immirgrant to rip off the Uk?

Lag them in if your so concerned.

  9. What's In Store For Thailand?

Well, let me take a stab in the dark on what is in store for Thailand with the new PM?

Inflation, inflation, inflation and more inflation! And let's wait and watch the buying power of baht fizzles into nothing so the 300 baht/day wage would actually be a decrease in living standard!

tsk. tsk such a cynic - they'll just print more money - problem solved!!

I doubt the new Thaksin administration would print more money as you suggest. That is something only democrats do, just take a look at the Obama administration, true Marxists to the core. Spending, spending spending and printing more and more money and destroying the US economy. No the new Thai administration is rooted in good old fashioned capitalism. They will give the free market, free reign, grow the economy and increase wealth of the common man and middle class.

Bullshit, since when has capitalism, and especially thai govts. ever given a thought for the common man.Capitalism=greed is good.

Do you really think bringing Thaksin back is their main priority wink.gif

It's NOT their main priority, but I think it's their ONLY mission.

i know the post was possibly made in half-jest but do ye really think they care about one man's well-being above every issue facing thailand?

is it if they can't get thaksin back, to hell with thailand? ye really think they are THAT evil minded?

Yes,this is what the last 5 years has been about.Thaksin back and money back.He doesn't give a rat's toss bag about opposing people and thoughts.Watch Yinluck and Khon Issan get stabbed in the back.Do you really think she can stand up to pee chai?More than half of Thai people have been duped, but hey, that's democracy.Politicians in the west have been doing it for centuries.

  11. I believe all these KFC workers knew what the wages were when they went to work and i also believe they knew the benefits so...........whats the problem? If they do not like the deal quit. Unions have ruined the west and looks like it might start in Thailand.

The unions are the reason you had a decent wage and a pension,so you can now live off the labour of the underpaid in Thailand. You don't quit, you get a better deal of the huge profits.

  12. I remain out of politics, not interested in it here or home BUT all respect and honour due to those who desrves it.

I am amazed at the people, including foreigners - failing to realize what S. Thaksin did for this country and its people; including foregn businesses.

We probably fail to realize what he did since for many of us he did nothing. Why would we credit the growth of our companies to a man that did nothing [but work against us]?

But please, humor us, tell us what he did that helped us.

Yes, you are absolutely correct with: Pls, humor us, tell us what he did that helped us.

Aromaz should correct its Archive about Thailand that is if he has an Archive about Thailand.

My Archive about Thailand shows it was a Mr. Chun Leekpai who took the country from the brink of disaster when Chavalit Yongchaiyudh had driven the country over the cliff into the ravine of financial disaster and threw in the towel. Mr. Motormouth Thaksin at that time was nowhere to be seen.

It was Chun Leekpai and his Thai Democratic Party – the oldest political party in Thailand, starting in the early thirties – who was asked to take on to lead the country out of its financial disaster and held the Thai people's nose to the grindstone saving money as fast as possible to give it back the IMF so as to get out from under the IMF dictates. Chun's austerity the Thai people didn't appreciate so at the election Thaksin with his bags of falls-goodies arrived on the scene and the Thais like always when shown red, blue and grey bills fall over themselves to grab them regardless of the consequences after the orgy. Then when Thai people had fallen for Thaksin bullshit and he was in the driver seat Thaksin took the money Chun had saved and with great fanfare in all the Thai dis-news Medias presented the money to the IMF with the foolish Thais telling themselves it was Thaksin's own money. And this Thai people Cinderella behavior is still prevailing today 2011. Don't believe it, take a look around Thailand and you will be blinded by RED, shirts that is. Next election it will be interesting to see if Thai people have awakened from their brain-dead slumber.

Spot on Swerver, that's my recollection also.

  13. FWIW

All electrics in LOS must be treated with suspicion. There is no regulation earthing system in force. Some building will use an earth spike driven into the ground but this is not much help if the ground dries out - best place is near to a septic tank. Other systems Ive seen

anchor a wire to a steel rebar in the structure. This should work but Ive never test its integrity.

The nasty system is when your monkey hammers a masonary nail into a concrete column and then wraps the earth wire around. Wouldnt put my money on that one but its common practice.

My take - never use an electric shower of the older type that doesnt have a safety cutout. Even then press the test button before using the shower. These cutouts do fail particularly in electrical storms. If you see a shower unit connected only by two wires (no separate earth wire visible) then I wouldn't use it. Even if it has an earth wire you can't be sure the earth wire is properly connected (see above) so its chancy.

A safer way is to put the shower head in a bucket and fill it up with hot water. Then switch off the shower at the main switch and have a splash shower.

BTW this is a much safer option with children who are much more vulnerable to electric shock. Keep any electric wires plugs , equipment off the floor and away from toddlers reach. If a kid gets a shock its totally silent no scream or warning cry and you wont know unless you were there instantly. You just find a dead child

If you are staying in an appartment for some time and are faced with an older shower unit without a safety trip then look around for circuit breaker switch nearby. A safety trip switch is generally available as a direct replacement for the simple breaker and will fit inside the existing cover and is easily identified by having a little test button. These cost around B400 from an electrical wholesaler and is a moment's work with a screw driver to change over. Make sure you can switch power off at the main switch first - not always present. If not then its a live changeover and if you are not competent then get an electrician to do it for you. You can always change it out for the original when you leave the appartment so you cant get blamed for anything by the landlord. Thats what I used to do.

If you really want to alarm yourself, carry a simple neon screwdriver around with you. You will be amazed at how much stuff is live - even though it doesnt seem to give you a shock.

Of course the shower is the worst case scenario. Wet bodies large area of contact

A sad accident RIP but a very common one in LOS.

FYI - all electrical circuits leak, there is no perfect insulator, its all a matter of how much leakage there is

A swimmer in sea water can be electrocuted by a little as 8 volts head to toe.

You can get a shock from a 12 volt car battery if your hands are wet from sea water (as in a boat for example)

Another common example - rice cookers - they all leak

My gf went to take out the aluminium bowl full of cooked rice from the cooker. She was standing on the kitchen concrete floor bare footed - as you do. She grabbed the pot and received a nasty jolt causing her to scream obscenities at me and blame me of course. I put a rubber mat on the floor after that cos you cant tell thais anything cos you are a flang and what do you know. Several villagers and children to my knowledge have been electrocuted in this manner.

I have received shocks from the most unlikely sources

A garden wall, where the lamp on top of the wall was leaking

A domestic bakelite light switch which was outside facing sea breezes. The salt spray had built up a microscopic conducting film

A pvc flexible cord attached to a standard lamp - rats had eaten away at the insulation - why do they like PVC?

    Have a nice day

    Robin

What's with the monkey comment,if you call people that no wonder you get a bodgey job, probably trying to kill you.

  14. It's true that it's not easy to find a good electrician or plumber here... Every time I tried someone new, there was always something wrong, got bored quickly.

I personally do these things by myself now, easy to make it better and faster.

You don't look too far for sparky, good one in Surin area, and excellent English as well, and i'm the plumber.

  15. Bangkok Bank has a debit card using Chip technology and it seems to be fully protected because it only works at their chip-enabled ATMs. That means that the other banks here haven't put chip reading into their ATMs yet.

You sure it only works at their ATMs? I guess that would be good for local people but not if they plan to travel where there are no BKK Bank ATMs but you have to start somewhere. Bottom line, moving to a new technology is no easy task especially when you are talking electronics when after full implementation another technology comes along that is better and the crooks have already found a way to get around the currently used technology.

Yes,it only works on their atm,and only withdraw to limit, not double limit as magnetic strip card allows.

  16. Sometimes the best offense towards crime is a good defense. Avoid using ATM's that are in high-foot traffic tourist areas. Try and use ones that are off the beaten track and also do a visual inspection of the card feeder. You can often spot that it has been tampered with or looks odd. Also change your password occasionally.

Sound advice. I actually set up my US Bank account to alert me via email to my balance every day. Not sure about Europe but in the US you can only be held accountable for $50 or some minimal amount if you report the card missing/stolen with in 48 or 72 hours. As for this kind of fraud you may be 100% covered but whose to say how long it takes to get that money back. Very dangerous in the US too in terms of fraud because Bank Cards issued in the USA can be swiped just like credit cards at any place that takes Visa/MC without putting your pin number in. The difference with a credit card is that in the Bank Card situation the money is debited immediately from your account. The only time you need to enter your pin is if you are withdrawing cash.

What I don't understand is how did they get the pin numbers? The card itself doesn't contain information on your secret PIN number and it sounds like a whole bunch of cards involved ... I guess a lot of spying by the ATMs where they set up the card readers.

When I went to Kunming, Yunan, China durin' the new year, I bought a pair of jeans. I couldn't use my credit card as they asked me to enter the PIN but I couldn't remember. I always use it without the PIN almost everywhere except in Kunming,China.

As for the case, I don't mind if they scam Thai banks cos' they unscrupulously make money from their clients. Charges are on every f*ckin' thing plus givin' poor exchange rates. The credit is for our Thai police again Bravo. However, there are some cases still mysterious up north where a few Farangs died at Downtown Inn........ :guitar:

    Hey Dunkin,I got scammed,not Thai bank,wake up.

  17. This is total, absolute bullshit!

I was defrauded when using my Kasikorn bank web card just last week - I called them immediately to cancel the transaction.

They told me that nothing could be done!!

They asked me to go and fax them a form detailing the fraud, which I did, and they have done exactly zero about it!

Don't believe these useless lying sacks of dog feces. They do not care if you live or die, or if your money gets stolen, or about anything more complex than a fuc_king turnip.

Just thought I might mention this before some idiot gets on here to applaud the move and decry the cynics as Thailand-hate mongers.

Yes I rember the case a few years ago of the guy whos card was stolen and they even had CCTV footage of the thief using it but they didn't do a thing for him and he lost.

I chased up everything for Bangkok Bank, on advice from a lawyer.Gave atm cd of the crime in progress, also good photos from cd which matched a photo i'd copied from Thai Visa site back in November.Pattaya monkey house have him now.Back in hands of lawyer now as have to make criminal case against fraudster.Bangkok Bank does nothing to help and sympathy. If case proven, the money gets divided up with everyone that has been victimised. I'm not holding my breath.

  18. In most western cultures it cost nothing to marry them< but after a while it costs everything to get rid of them.

A good friend recently paid approx 1.5 mil in cultral sin sot payment, on the wedding day he was presented with a house valued at over 4 mill buy the parents.

Before everyone assumes its all in her name it was property in Australia that they now both own.

Can't get much in Oz for 4 mill.
