Hello folks

Can some of you frequent travelers give me an idea on cheap flights one way CM to BKK. Present searching throws up Bangkok Airways as most convenient/cheapish, with a quoted 990 baht fare for 21 day advance purchase. Unfortunately this becomes 1560 baht after a "airport surcharge". Are most airlines going to be hit with a similar add on, and does the final fare seem reasonable value in any case?

Ummm...I think Fred is seeking to make the point, graphically, that this is very old news, and has been done to death over recent weeks on this forum...try searching for "duty free scam" and I'm sure you'll find it

Any suggestions for what would be a good book on Chiang Mai - I don't mean the usual Lonely Planet travel stuff but something which gives a better understanding about how modern CM came to be, and what makes the place tick...

Tops is still open, bought supplies there yesterday...maybe it is a local thing- all the express boats on the river were packed today..

Wandering around the Silom/Patpong area it appears that the place is practically deserted..even the stallholders around Patpong seem to have gone past the pestering stage...I've never seen this area so quiet....what can be done to get the tourists back?

Flew with them this week Melb/B'kok- no problems at all, nor on previous flights (Syd/HCM, Sing/Siem Riep)...haven't checked the figures, but their seats seem to have more room than the last Qantas International flight I had (Joburg/Syd)

Unfortunately I left my brain at home when I went shopping for some new shirts for my forthcoming trip to Bangkok and Chiang Mai, and came home with a nice black one and a nice red one...guess what I'm not wearing on 6 August..

We are frequent visitors to the LOS from Australia, heading over for 6 weeks next week! Looking forward to a month kicking back in Chiang Mai. Have appreciated assistance already rec'd on avoiding the ATM charge!

Got this comment from a Thai resident when I passed on the advice- "Foreign ATM cards don't work in Aeon or Government Savings Bank ATMs, as far as I know. " Is that right?

To save me reading through 65 pages of posting (did manage the first 12!) , can some kind person point me to which Bank's ATMs I can use to avoid the 150 baht transaction fee when I use my Visa branded debit card? (we'll be in both B'kok and Chiang Mai)

Anyone have any idea about how what distance in total is the moat around the old city?
