Thanks for the help everyone - we had a wonderful meal at Gaggan, just around the corner from our apartment - the service was excellent and the food extremely good... try the mohito - the marinated sugercane is divine. The food is pricey by Bangkok standards but well worth it, and way way cheaper then the equivalent back in Oz. Over the last 5 days we have also had wonderful food in the street stalls in the sois behind Langsuan.

Wine
in Chiang Mai
[
How much is a box of the red "catering wine" (taken from their website) from Montclair? I've never bought wine packaged like that before but may give it a try.
Currently in BKK, and a 5 litre cask at the local Villa Market is about 970 bht, from memory about the same in CM

Wine
in Chiang Mai
These guys
http://www.montclair-wine.com/NewSite/index.php
do a 5 litre cask which Rimping has at a very reasonable price. Its probably the most reliable white we've come across, and the red wouldn't kill a brown dog either.
The problem with much of the bottled wine available in Thailand is the questionable transport and storage conditions it gets subjected to, and the fairly slow turnover in many wine stores. I've seen quite a bit of 6 year old Sav Blanc turning an interesting dark yellow on the shelves of some so-called specialist wine shops.
Of course, if your friends are whine snobs you might like to put a litre in a decanter and hide the cask at the back of the fridge!

Anyone know of somewhere in the Langsuan/Ratchadamri area that would be showing the Tri nations on the weekend?
(Game is in NZ, so looking at lunchtime I guess)

Dear Bangkok Forumites - we are staying for a couple of weeks at:
Anantara Baan Rajprasong Serviced Suites
3 Soi Mahardlekluang 3, Rajdamri Road
Lumpinee, Pathumwan, Bangkok 10330
We would most appreciate local knowledge, especially regarding great places to eat locally - we prefer Thai food and love to forage from street markets, eat at street restaurants as well as food courts and high end Thai restaurants.
Any other local tips also much appreciated. We are familiar with Bangkok generally and won't be out doing tourist sightseeing or shopping for clothes or souveniers. What we really like to do is eat Thai! .... and go to bars with great atmosphere, happy hours etc.

Anyone have any more info about this item in today's Australian papers?

Thanks TM, looks like I'll get to 3 games this visit!
Think I owe you a beer for the lift last time!

Am I right to think the Chiang Rai move means there will be football every weekend at the 700 year Stadium?
Maybe an enthusiast with better Thai than mine could put together a consolidated program for both CM and CR games at the Stadium??
Here Goes, I think its about right, but obviously this being Thailand changes can happen. The 3 games that clash will obviously need to be re-arranged but no updates as yet.

We are coming back for another month in August, this time staying at Kantary Hills. We'd appreciate people's thoughts on the best eateries/bars in the Nimmanheiman area, and particularly any tips about recommended foodstalls for those all important lunchtime plastic bag takeaways (or do we need to go down to Suthep for those?)
Hope to catch up with some of you CM FC supporters at the Stadium!

Dear Folks - looks like Verasu does not carry Le Creuset any more - any clues where to get Le Creuset now, including in Chiang Mai? Thanks

Unless you are in desperate need of crappy T shirts or clicky frogs, I'd not recommend the Night Market area as the most attractive area to stay. It looks particularly cruddy in the daytime. Ask the question of Tripadvisor and you'll get some good alternatives...

Just wanted to set up some reading material for my next visit in August, but can't seem to get the Gekko online catalogue to work (Hi George!). I'm on a Mac, and tried Safari and Firefox. Does it work for anyone/any browser?

I don't know of anywhere that offers free flow champagne.
But if you are looking to spend upwards of 2,000 baht per person I can't imagine the "free flow" is actually free!!!
And I'd be wondering whether the advertised champagne=any white sparkling wine..

Congratulations to the Englishmen- all 7 of them, and the 4 South Africans!!
-
Give him a copy of Stephen Leather's great book "Private Dancer"...and see if he is still keen to come after he's read it!
-
Go and see Kevin Hunt at the Red Lion- I'm sure he'd be happy to put the right music DVD on while you have a couple of pints..

Cheers and all the best for the New Year, It was nice to spend a evening at the footy with you. Hope your not too disappointed that you got your <deleted> kicked in the ashes. Let me know next time your in town and we'll meet up for some beer and banter.
Thanks mate, I'll been keen to do that- and best of luck for CMFC in the big league.
One thing on my to-do list when I get back is to get my British passport...if you can't beat em, ....

Heading back to Oz tomorrow, so would just like to say thanks and goodbye to all the kind souls who have helped out by answering my questions, and all the nice TV people we have met through this forum.
Oh, and not forgetting those that I only had the pleasure of sparring with on TV. Its all been good!
Probably won't be back for a while, so let me wish all TV members a safe and prosperous 2011. And Long Live HM the King!

We had a great lunch at the Duke's. Plenty of food, and the quality was top notch, and amazing value for money. The company was great and Dave was the perfect host. We grazed for 4 hours and went home very happy. Well done Dave and the team!

Judging from recent court filings, it appears it might be Jatupornleaks.
I am saddened by the deaths, but people who put themselves in harms way, in an active conflict area, will always be at risk.
The military strategist at the big Austalian SE Studies institute mentioned that the general impression globally military experts, was that Thai army urban suppression as an operation, was carried out very well, and would be used as an example for their own training programs.
Not defending any actions that prove themselves to be malicious but the operation itself was as effective as it could have been.
What a load of rubbish- any Australian Government on who's watch this type of extra-judicial murder took place would be forced to resign, after which there would be REAL investigations, Royal Commissions and prosecutions with lengthy jail terms for the soldiers involved...and how effective is an operation where innocent civilians like the photographer and the zookeeper get it in the neck?
And now around Chiang Mai there is increasing evidence of red shirts being hunted down and killed by government assassination squads...but no investigation of these deaths either.
The Burmese government must wonder how Thailand gets away with it without any international sanction..

Hi, I can recommend the guy at Sridonchai road, passing the nitebazar at the Panthip Plaza traffic lights go left, 20 meters after the 7Eleven at left side, his salon is just accross the right side soi that is next to the large hotel, forgot the name.
He's really good, standard male haircut cost 150 bath. A very friendly gay with good feeling for fashion, he teaches too.
It is called 'Shampooh Salon' and he does both Ladies and |Gents hair styling.
Just make sure that you ask the price first - he doesn't have his prices displayed, so you could be seriously overcharged.

Just looking for an update about smoking at Soi 8 - is it safe to presume this is no longer a venue filled with cigarette smoke?
