  1. Have you thought that maybe people don't come back on and give there thanks because like i have done in the past have come on here because as you say it can be very informative especially for us that don't live there and only come for a few weeks at a time to ask a simple question and all we get is sarcasm, the p**s taken out of us or our question, some of you are so up your own backsides because you have been living there for some time and you seem to forget that you were once a newcomer or vacationer there and didn't know your way round or how to go on, i just have to laugh at some of the comments i have got but i would imagine some people get quite offended...i think that some of you must be quite bitter and sad people that you cant just give a civil answer ... there you go now i have had my rant and no doubt i will get a load of abuse now!!!

If they get so offended that they don't return to give a simple notice that they appreciate the info, then why do they return to post a next request for help ?

Maybe they just live in hope that they will get the answers to the questions that they ask instead of people trying to be a clever sh*t!!!

  2. Thank you all for replying...Yes we could afford the hotel limo but its the principle, we are not prepared to pay 3/400bhts one way to go some where that is only 5 mins away! we also know the bhat bus routes but as most of you will know that unfortunatly the royal cliff is off the main routes, while we have no problem walking some of the way either end which is something we often do,when i am dressed for dinner in heels etc i really prefer not to walk too far, i am quite good at bartering with the bhat bus drivers so will probebly take the advice of some of you and print a map to show them.

  3. Sounds a daft question but we visit Pattaya every year some times twice a year and get around quite easy whether it be by walking,Bhat buses etc, we stay at the at the Royal cliff and want to go to the Au Bon Coin restaurant which we have been to before but was taken by friends who will not be there this visit so need to make our own way there, they dont supply there own taxi like a lot of restaurants,if we use our hotels limo service it is quite expensive and if we try to use a bhat bus it is most unlikley we can make them understand what restaurant or where it is, so any body got any sensible sugggestions please

  4. Ok well heres my opinion on Mantra.

Decor no one in pattaya beats it however the food was not as good as I expected it would be.

They let me in with shorts, when the wife and lady were speaking she said its only downstairs they dont allow people with shorts in but they allow people upstairs to wear them.

Had to wait 30 mins in the bar area to get seated, thats ok, couple of cocktails, lovely nuts and olive platter given free I thought we were onto a winner.

Get upstairs I see the wine menu, Monkey Bay I think it is, sauvignon blanc from marlbrough my favourite region, I am sure I have seen this in most supermarkets for 400-500 baht, 2000 baht! LAZO chardonnay a similar price, you know I dont mind buying expensive wine but not supermarket wine thats overpriced and rubbish. I ended up paying 2500 for another wine from NZ that in my home country costs 350 baht. Its ok I understand the tax, just wish that the white wines they went out of their way a bit and had a better selection thats not from the supermarkets.

I ordered some sort of platter, I wanted the ahi tuna but it came with a mix of other things, grilled eggplant tower, foire grois, parmesean souffle and parma ham and melon. I detest foire grois but I wanted the ahi tuna so I went with this. I hardly touched the parmesean souffle wasnt nice at all. Parma ham and melon well its a combination thats always a winner however the parma ham was not the best I have had around here, La bocca and the ham from EATALY etc much better. Although I hate how foire grois is made I still gave it one bite, tasty but I felt guilty eating it. Eggplant tower pretty bland.

I was kind of annoyed pre starter at the lack of food. At Cafe Des Amis you get breads and Amuse Bouche that keeps you happy until you get your food. Looking after a young baby all day we dont get much time to eat so we were hungry by the time we got here and after already having 2 cocktails and a glass of wine my wife said she felt drunk and didnt want to drink any more, it also spoiled the rest of her meal really. In Cafe Des Amis at least you have some bread to soak up the alcohol and Amuse Bouche to keep you happy taste wise.

Main course I went for the lamb shank, their menu is just far too big it took me about 15 mins to even decide what I wanted and even then I wasnt sure. My wife got the lamb chops as she gets nearly every time in CDA. The main came almost instantly after our starter, no time to breathe just there you go theres more food.

For mine - lamb, tender however it felt small, everything was jammed onto the plate and covered in gravy unlike in CDA where you get to put your own gravy on and laid out on a plate not all jammed together. Veg was undercooked, infact raw, carrots were like rocks as was the broccoli. Mash was ok but nothing amazing, I cook better myself.

Wifes Lamb chops, tough and chewey, nice sear and seasoning but the quality just wasnt up there, again veg undercooked, mash wasnt up to much either.

When your paying 70baht for a small bottle of water you expect it to be at least something better than a 10baht bottle of minerele, 700% profits, where is that in gordon ramsays how to do business book? Its not the fact I am paying 70baht its the fact they are lazy and dont bother choosing a better brand name of water to match their high quality ingredients, same with their wine, a big let down.

Lovely place, just feel let down on the food and wine after so many good times at CDA I feel guilty I have gone there now, at almost double the price also. 7500 baht for 2 + I gave 10% tip.

At least I gave it a try but next week its back to CDA or La Bocca

    Where is La Bocca ?
  5. Manhattans Bar was getting refurbished but the restraunt was still open. I enjoyed the food and the service was good..Higher end price point.

Food is nowhere near as good as what is was several years ago. The re-furb is also horrible.

Is the bar refurbishment finished now as it seemed to take an awful long time and i have to say apart from the fact that we think after it changed hands it went downhill the refurb going on also put us off as it never looked like anything was being done!!!!!!

  6. Went to Manhattons 2 or 3 years ago and loved it even though it was a bit expensive but then it changed hands and i personally thought it wasent so good any more,we now go to Cafe Des Amis when in Pattaya and absolutley love it there.

  7. I live really close to Preecha and go there a lot however I do feel Pupen at the end of jomtien beach (the end away from pattaya) is much better in terms of taste and what they have to offer. They also sell carlsberg there now and have a few good bottles of wine (for thailand). I have been to the royal cliffs sea food place and it just doesnt compare, although its nice surroundings its just not near as good enough.

There is also a place in nak lua, after bangkok hospital on sukumvit there will be a sign on sukumvit to turn left its name is moom aloy, very nice setup and they have many VIP rooms that are air conditioned if you dont like being outside in the heat. Pupen also has a VIP room but its rather large.

Pupen and Moom Aloy are full to the rafters every night, seen a few thai celebrities eating in Pupen, preecha is busy but closes early I feel and their service has been a let down for me of late

Where is the sea food place at Royal cliff....we stay there every year when we come to Pattaya

sometimes twice a year and have been for the last 10 years and dont know the the where abouts of a sea food restaurant there !!!!!!

  8. Definatley Cafe Des Amis gets our vote, we were there in Pattaya in November for nearly a month as we have been doing so for the last ten years and always like to go to in the OP words flash places to eat, in our opinion the Cafe Des Amis has got to be the best restaurant in Pattaya, the food the decor and the ambience is second to none, we couldent keep away from the place, and they will send there car ( at a cost ) to pick you up and take you home, coming in March aswell this year and cant wait to eat there again.

  9. Can any one recommend a high class Thai restaurant in Pattaya or Jomtien please, not the sugar Hut as when we were last there a couple of years ago was very disappointed as it had really gone down hill, Pic kitchen was ok as food alright but couldent stand the noise of the Jazz band.

  10. I have heard that this area is targeted as a new "Night Market" - the stall holders to take down their tables at midnight.

So will be a thriving investment for any Thai stall holder and Ex-pat bar owner.

    I heard that too.

Like I said there is a mix.

Also in the area, a newish Italian restaurant that is quite decent, fresh pastas/pizzas/dinner plates (across from the Bali place) and just today noticed a new American food place called Bourbon Street (I doubt related to the famous Bangkok place) opening in the old Seafood Emporium location. It is quite clear to me this entire area is going to boom. This being greater Pattaya, of course it includes beer bars.

As others have mentioned there is a lower priced Indian place in the beer bar area and some old favorites like the Mr. Moo joint. Around the main market there are a lot more Thai style stalls opening. It seems like something new every week now.

One thing I am really liking so far is the really good mix and healthy balance of typical Thai food market places and expat/tourist attractions. Maybe you can say that about a lot of areas in town, but I am feeling something new and special beginning to happen in that area.

Hi Jingthing, can you give me a better idea where this area is please as we will be coming for our usual months holiday in november and quite like going down to Jomten for a change, although we can find our way round pretty good its difficult sometimes to know what roads and area's are called :jap:

Suggest you read the title of the post - perfect description

Yes i know but as i said it is not always obvious what roads are called there and where different areas are, anyway i was asking Jingthing !!!!

  12. In the locked double thread Yermanee says:

"We have a name for it : " Schadenfreude" Used globally I believe"

Lived it a number of countries and never heard the term, so definitely not used globally. Perhaps in England.

I don't believe that is why they so graphically display death in the news. I think it's more about trying to create shock.

    Think its a German word.

  13. Have to agree Kamluan, you come on here ask a simple question and to get some information about the country and all you get is sarcasm, insults etc and never really get a straight answer because it nearly always turns into some sort of argument and feud and back biting between some of the posters,

  14. Whats happened to the Pogoda in the Jomtien complex? i hear its shut down, shame if it is as when we have been there the food ( in our opinion ) is always very good and it was always one of the busier restaurants around there, So cant understand why if it is.

  15. Just wondering what the Sugar Hut is like nowadays, went there quite a few years ago when we first started visiting Pattaya and really liked it, the food was very good and loved the setting, went back a couple of years later and was so disappointed as to how it had gone down hill and as we took friends with us and had raved about the place it was a bit embarrassing for us, so can some of you enlighten me as to how it is now please.

  16. Go to the Royal Cliff, beautiful grounds e.g gardens etc, private beach, 10/11 restaurants, gym, the staff and service are second to none, away from the hustle and bustle of the the town yet near enough to be there in 5 minutes in a baht bus or as we do when we are there a pleasant walk of about 20 mins to get downtown. we have been going there for 10 years and cant fault the place, it really is worth a try.
