  1. Why bother? I have a washing Lady here in Chiang Mai that does a huge load for between 80 - 100 Baht every 3 weeks. After some initial 'training' she washes, irons, folds all my gear and ready in 2 days. Guess what! No machine cost, no electricity, no water, no detergent, no softener, no iron, no ironing board, no insurance if water leaks, no problems. Hunt around your area there must be heaps of Ladies wanting to earn some extra money..... Regards

  2. If they want to help ease traffic matters they should reduce the number of taxis. There are an extimated 70,000 taxis in a city that only requires about half that number. Another thing would be for the taxi driver to accept all fares who flag them. I am fed up with the crap of taxi drivers telling me they do not or will not go where I want to go. Failure to accept a fare should result in hack licenxse revocation. Now, why won't this ever happen? The taxi mafia.

Let them go blow smoke up someone else's ass.

Seconded. What kind of crap taxi service refuses a fare? Have never seen this in any other country ever, it's ridiculous.

Try Australia - now you know.....

  3. Building Standards in SoCal (sic), are many times higher than Thailand. You should be excited.....

Yes another, hope it's an aftershock and not a warning of something bigger to come.

Anyone who's experienced earthquakes knows the aftershock(s) are almost inevitable and 99% of the time but a fraction of the initial shift. Only the superstitious and paranoid would think otherwise.

Was sitting in the lobby of the Shangri-La Hotel in Chiang Mai when the first one arrived & having lived thru numerous quakes in Southern California over a good number of years (including the Northridge quake in the early 90's) thought, "Oh gee, I think I feel an itty-bitty earthquake..." & continued with what I was doing, talking on the phone with a friend. The intensity was next to nil and while surprised of a quake in CM, I didn't jump from my seat as the intensity was anything but intense. I can however understand how the uninitiated might get rattled, but no more than that of the fear one might get from a severe thunder storm if that's not what you're used to. We used to regularly get 2-3 quakes in So.Cal's Imperial Valley just like that & more so on a yearly basis. We lived with it. I suppose those not exposed to this natural occurrence might freak out, but really... this was nothing to get excited about. One's life is a thousand fold more in danger simply driving around town than that quake ever was. I'm more rattled by the lunatic pinheads who run red lights and drive into oncoming traffic with no headlights than any quake ever does.

  4. You wanna buy my Dutch Batavus citybike ? Batavus is a famous 400 year old brand from Holland, the bike is in excellent condition because I did'nt use it a lot.

7 speed, drumbrakes and serious 'Amsterdam-Proof' locks, just need a new saddle because the rubber is kind of 'melting'.

New it was around '90.000 bath' so don't expect a bargain, because I don't really NEED to sell it, but can contact me. This top quality bike is unique in Thailand and you will get many reactions from locals who are impressed...

Very smooth and pleasant to drive !

Wow, really looks a beauty. Give me an idea of the Baht you want, I'm just looking for a restoration project. Found an old Raleigh Sports from the 50's in a backstreet soi repair shop. Crafty devil wanted 9,000 Bht, too much for what I want to do. Many thanks for your response. Regards

  5. Can't help you with the bike but I ride the streets of chiang mai and the surrounding country roads and highways everyday. I wouldn't call it 'dicing with death'. The UK was far more dangerous. I feel quite safe here and I do some 300-400 km a week.

Thanks for that. Have had some perilous times on a mtorbike, but I guess a bicycle is more nimble. Regards

  6. Would like to buy an old Raleigh, Rudge, Humber bicycle, gents, in reasonable condition suitable for restoration. May even dice with death and ride the streets of Chiang Mai!! Please PM. Thank you

  7. Hi all, I hope someone can help me with some tips and correct procedures to obtain a one month tourist Visa to Australia. I want to take my 50 year old Thai lady friend with me for a one month trip to Australia when I renew my Non Imm O Visa in October. All I hear and read are horror stories regarding obtaining the tourist Visa for her.

I have paid for her return airfare and will take out travel/medical insurance for the duration in Australia.

She has a steady job, two adult male children, one working, one studying.

Should she be applying for 676 or 48R.

    Thanks in anticipation.
