  1. Let me start bkkjames, if you don't mind.

Soi 8 bar 95 B tiger pint all day all night, that was last week :D , hopefully next month as well :)

Was there last night - price for Tiger now 110 baht

No news as yet re BKK's request re deals

    BT

Thats £2.40 a pint at todays exchange rate...cheaper in the U.K.

Not in my SW London local it's not, your lucky to get any pint cheaper than 3 quid and if your a lager drinker then it's over 3.50 a pint.

  2. The appeal process is clearly laid out on the UK gov't visa page, look on the left-side bar for FAQ.

    Thanks for that, much appreciated.

In terms of the practicality, is this usually just a submission of your appeal and the grounds under which you make the submission or are people usually represented ? As it seems to to be in London, do people usually attend in person, do they usually appoint lawyers, would any of this be covered by legal aid or do they just send the forms in and wait ?

I doubt that you would qualify for legal aid on an issue such as this.

  3. We don;t know what visa this is for a start. Is it a retirement visa or an O-A. There is no 90-day reporting for the O-A as you are supposed to leave every 90 days anyway. It sounds like he has an O-A and didn't leave the country. Should have been 20K baht fine max anyway. For the O-A there is a large stamp that gives the permission to stay (for the year), and a smaller stamp that tells you to to leave after the 90-day period. The old guy probably only say the large stamp. I would hope embassies are clearer about the rules, especially for old folks who might not have all their faculties!

Nope, the Non immigrant O-A visa gives you 365 days when entering Thailand, and as such requires the holder to do 90 day address reporting.

And this is NOT mentioned anywhere in text or with a date stamp in your passport!

Either the embassy/consulate tells you, or you have to find out yourself!

Not all O visas require you to leave the country, if you have O based on marriage to a Thai and apply and get the 1 year extn, all you have to do is a 90 day address report at your allocated Imm office without leaving the country.

  4. If they are not answering the phone they are not there.

I had a similar situation around Songkran. I called them the week before to ask them which days they were closed, they told me Tues, Weds, Thurs and open on the Mon and Fri. I went on the Fri but the office was closed as they had an extra day public holiday.

As the government have announced public holidays because of the current unrest, you can bet your bottom dollar they hopped it off home.

  5. I was under the impression that ATM rates were updated several times during the day regardless of banking hours.

I use http://bankexchagerates.daytodaydata.net and it gives you a comparison of most Thai banks and shows how many times that day they have updated their rates.

You can then see which will give you the best rate and extract money from their ATM

  6. do you have a contract based account with AIS? if so, i believe you should be able to top up via their online service here: https://eservice.ais.co.th/EBillWeb/index.h...!-554819033

I don't have contract, so the site you mentioned told me to go to:

    www.ais.co.th/12Call/eservice

The website is up, but the eservice itself: "Sorry, the service is temporary unavailable right now. Please try again later." :)

Wonder what that means? I wouldn't think the office itself needs to be open, or for a person needs to be available to fulfill?

Go to any Telewiz store and pay cash and they will do it for you, I don't have 3G as live in ROI ET but this is how I pay my monthly AIS Internet mobile.

  7. Expect customers to return after the political problem is solved? I'd certainly like for the political problem to have been solved a long time ago instead of morphing into what it has become. I have my doubts as to whether or not the class divide and the geographic divide will ever be solved...

I agree especially if corruption is at the core of Thai culture.

Corruption is at the core of Thai society, I thought that was a fact.

  8. To obtain a driving license from the Thai authorities you need,

    Passport

    Valid non Imm Visa

    Doctor's certificate

    Valid driving license

    2 x photo's

    Embassy letter confirming residency

    Copies of the above.

The embassy letter can be replaced by a letter from your local town hall confirming the address where you live, depends on the vehilcle licence centre.

You may also have to take a practical driving test and a eyesight test, again depends on the centre.

  9. The Pent and The Bank usually get good reviews concerning the quality of the hostesses and decor. If you have never been to a G Club before you should be aware they are expensive.

For a listing of clubs go visit the bangkok2night web site.

Their are other nightlife review sites for bangkok which you should search for that I will not mention here.

  10. The same thing nearly happened to me but as I was walking out of the office in Amnat Charoen I realised that I didn't have the 90 day slip with my reporting date on. So I went back in and filled in the form TM.47 and got it but it was a close shave.

Was at Amnat on Monday for my last 90 day report and I was in and out in under 10 minutes, long may it continue!

  11. Thanks Guys. No I don't think it makes a difference if the cheque is in USD or GBP. Interesting the fees seem to be about the same as a SWIFT transfer. The only difference appears to be the rate applied to the transfer, because it will not be in just a few days but about a month later. Could work to your favour, or not I guess.

I am sort of warming to the idea of going back to using cheques. Better than filling out all the paperwork for a SWIFT transfer, and the onus is on the Bank to get the transfer right.

I'm not missing anything here am I?

I have paid in GBP cheques to my Bangkok Bank account so it's no problem but it does take 30 days to clear. If time is not important then pay in here otherwise post it to your bank in the UK if you need the funds quicker. As you say the exchange rate will move up and down while the processing is taking place.

  12. WOW!

I really feel sorry for the small buisness owners in Bangkok that was depending on this week for a boost to there bottom line going into the slow season.

It is amazing how desperate people can be to be so loyal to such a self serving, former PM. Is all Thaksin did was hand out 500 baht notes for votes and promise village mayors of endless prosperity, that never happend.

As with most countries, farmers are either poor or not that well off. Why now do the poor farmers think that Thaksin will all the sudden make them anymore than they always have been. They where poor when he was the PM and they will be just as poor with the next PM.

This guy would rather bring this country to its knees and to the brink of civil war, than see another leader bring them out of a terrible ressesion and on the way to economic prosperity.

As these weeks go by, I truly believe he is handing out those 500 baht note again, and people believe he is the allmighty savior. When in reality he is just the same self serving dictator he was in the past, now with something to prove to the world.

I guess you give a desperate people a ray of hope they will follow you to the end of the Earth, and sacrifice all to serve him.

Reminds me of a couple of others in history. Hiltler, Stalin, Mucalini to name a few

At least he (Thaksin) was elected at the ballot box unlike the current PM who has never received a public vote. I fail to see how you can compare a dictiorship to free democratic elections in which the majority of the Thai people take part in.

  13. You can buy alcohol between 2pm and 5pm if you buy 10 litres which is about 1 box and 7 bottles of 330ml beer !

You are quite correct, also the 11 - 2 and after 5 hours are only adhered too by the major stores like the BIG C and Tesco etc. I can buy a case of beer, whisky etc from a small wholesale shop in my local town in ROI ET province from 4am until they close which is roughly between 5-6pm most days.
