  1. The sad news is that an excellent new Italian bakery has opened in Chiang Mai. The news is sad because my wife also has a bakery and I hate the thought of serious competition. The only good news in all this is that the new bakery is Italian so mostly isn't offering items that would compete with my wife's products. I lived in New York City for 30 years and never had much use for the multitude of Italian bakeries there. Their producs either tasted either very dry or as though their flavorings had been created somewhere in the vicinity of a refinery.

But this place is different. I briefly chatted with the owner, a young Italian woman, who told me that hers are family recipes. Realy dairy products are used here. I suspect that she comes from Northern Italy but I neglected to ask. At any rate, the name of the bakery is Cannella Cafe. I wouldn't be surprised if the espresso is delicious too but since I don't like coffee I can't say for sure.

The bakery is located on 51 Singharat Rd. Soi 4. It's roughly halfway between Siam TV and the Thai Airways Headquarters. Phone number is 0-5341-7727. I've attached a map.

    Ok, I give in - where's your wife's bakery ................ ?

  2. I need to renew my auto insurance next month and would like to use a broker in Pattaya. Anybody have any suggestions? Honda dealer provided the 1st class insurance last year, for a fee of course.

The best I've found is AA Insurance Brokers - also involved with Thai Visa :)

    Good Morning,

An American friend has no private health insurance, and no money. He is covered by Medicare, but only in the U.S., of course. If he ever needs medical treatment, but is too ill to travel to the U.S., I wonder if there is any place closer to Thailand that would accept Medicare (for a civilian, non-veteran). I am thinking possibly of military bases in The Philippines or Korea or Japan, or something like that. About Guam? Where the hel_l is Guam in relation to Thailand, anyway, and would it be easier to get there from Thailand rather than going to California?

    Any ideas?

    Thanks, lah!

    Aloha,

    Rex

Medicare overseas? Zero to zip. If he has no $$, might just be better for him to return to California, if that's where he's from, and go on welfare. He's probably not paying for Medicare Part B either, I'd bet. I'm not since I'm in Thailand, don't plan to access Medicare in the U.S.

    Mac

Agreed - if he cannot support himself why is he here - better of back in the States.

  4. Long time ago, 6-7 years, there was a monthly magazine i Chiang Mai that also had a section for Chiang Rai. Is that one still around ?

I have found "City Life" and understand that one is a monthly one. Is that a free magazine living on ads?

I am NOT going to start a new magazine, just a friend wants to have some ads in Chiang Mai and I try to help him.

I got the link to Citylife so if there is another one I apreciate if you give me the link.

    Thanks!

    :D:D:D

Advertise on Thai Visa - better and cheaper than using magazines :)

  5. Quite apart from how dangerous they are, they cannot be registered and so illegal on the roads. Should you cause an accident then, as you have no insurance, you are wide open to whatever claims the pasty may demand.

  6. The TAX boys from BKK have just confiscated 5 big bikes from 2 shops in Udon, seems like there is a clampdown on import? tax, not so much the green book issue, I have paid my TAX, 16000bht on a 1999 CB 1300, and bought insurance from the govt. dept., so I am mostly legal.

Its about time the govt. reduced the cost of the plates , and then we would all register, and pay tax every year after that.

Hehehehe - love this : "mostly legal" . Sorry but you are illegal, full stop, and as someone else pointed out if you have an accident you are not covered and may need an aufull lot of money to bribe your way out, or go to jail.

  7. It would appear to me that compensation should come from JCC. I think that property belonged to JCC and they sold out their residents by selling it to VT 7.

This is quite correct, JCC have only themselves to blame and if they imagine VT7 will be torn down then they are mistaken.

As for all this wasted money being spent on Lawyers etc., that is a great mistake by a few misguided individuals who are causing all the other owners in JCC to throw good money after bad. My feeling is that the owners should get their money back from these few individuals.

  8. Bummer, ctrunfree. Either the food has gone downhill since I was last there, quite a time ago, or we have a further clue that our tastes in food differ. I'm thinking the former, but hardly encouraged to check it out.

Back to San Sabai, great food, great service, great live music, great prices.

    Directions please.

    Errrrrr, Google ?

  9. I have a 1yr Thai car licence which expires on the 24/09/09, I know it can't be exchanged for a 5yr licence until the 25/09/09. But what documents are required for renewal in Pattaya ie:- copies of passport etc. help much appreciated, thankyou.

Suggest you look at the Pattaya Expats Club web site as they have the latest info.

  10. We're new to Chiang Mai, and need to set up a bank account to get occasional money transfers from overseas. Anybody have any suggestions about which of the bigger banks might offer the best service, charge least for wire transfers, and generally be good for limited use?

Met the Manager from the Bangkok Bank at the monthly Networking One evening - spoke good English and promised to help if anyone needs him. Seems the prefect bank/chap for you.

  11. Confirm of residence is one of 4 things, immigration slip, letter from embassy, work permit book, or (sometimes) yellow house book.. I have heard the latter not fully accepted.

As to the OP, when I made my 1 year into the 5 year I did none of the reaction, eye tests, video watching that was all part of getting my 1 year.. Just came did papers and got it issued. Must have changed.

Same renewing my 1 year to 5 year licenses in Kanchanaburi.

Painless and NO retake of the tests.

This is because there is a different procedure for renewing the first (1 year) DL to a 5 year DL than the renewing of a 5 year to a 5 year.

This is a good thing as attempts to make sure the holders of DL's are fit(?) to drive.

  12. hi folks

i was wondering wether anyone has tried looking for work in thailand through the british chamber of commerce thai branch . i would like to get a permanent job in thailand with a brit company preferably and thought this may be the best way forward ,has anyone tried the expat network site? and had any joy , i am a mechanical maintenance engineer by trade but not degree qualified though.

    thoughts and opinions any one??????????

    all the best

    paulthetool

Would have thought a job agency - Manpower (?) would be a better bet than a Chamber of Commerce ?
