  1. Please check the following in Sukhumvit, owner is Elena and is Greek, I love the food and order it also regularly via Food by Phone and ChefsXP (id=231)

    Olive Kebab & Cafe

    Address : 593/2 Sukhumvit Road

    Wattana District, Bangkok

(Between Soi 33 & 35 next to Villa Supermarket

    Highly recommended!!

    Classic.

Discussions about decor, etc. Not a word about the food other than bickering about whether hummus is Greek. Oh, Taramosalata is on the menu.

Well, I've eaten there a few times. So have quite a few people I know. Take-out from people who live in the area is common. The food is popular. The lamb chops are the best I've ever had.

The food is good. Given the lack of Greek food in the Sukhumvit area, decor and "atmosphere" seem overrated. As is obvious from the success of the gyro stand on Nana Soi 4 and even the success of Souvlaki on Patpong Soi 4 despite having to walk the "gauntlet" to get there. No, it's not a full-blown Greek restaurant. If I remember correctly, the last one of those attempted here failed. Ekamai, wasn't it? Zorba's is a little cafe. It's a place to eat good food. If you want good Greek food, try it. If you want decor and atmosphere, buy a plane ticket. :-)

  2. If your own countries were perfect, why did you come to thailand? It was your choice. If you cannot hack it go back.

May it come to your mind that there are quite a few people around who tend not to choose their country of residence according to its perfectness.

But of course, I know Thai people would not want to live in Laos or Cambodia because its less "perfect".

This is my home and has been for 5 years, I have invested a large amount of money into your economy, as have thousands of other 'Farang' , without this injection of cash, Thailand would be the same as Laos or Cambodia, would 'You' like that ?

People on this forum are just voicing their opinions as to why, in the 21st century, a country can never learn from it's own mistakes, or even realise that greed and corruption will not make your country move forward.

As much as many Thai's dislike 'Farang' without them, your Health, Education, Manufacturing, Construction, Business sectors would collapse.

I suggest if you 'Don't like it' unsubscribe !

Hmmm, I was always under the impression that people invest money for a return. Trying to imply that there would be a general collapse on the sectors you mention without farangs is really exaggerated. Just for my benefit, whatever country you are coming from, do they have any poor politicians? I think corruption is rampant everywhere, it is just that some countries have learned to hide it better than others.

  3. I would like to join all the members here to express my thanks to the Thaivisa team for all the updates. Not only were they valuable for my and my wife, but they were also a source of information to our people in Head Office wondering what the situation was here in Bangkok. I have sent the link to Thaivisa numerous times to friends and family, and when we had to move our office out and also out of our house, it was Thaivisa that kept us informed.

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!

    Nick

  4. Thanks for all the advice. Since the last time, I have had some additonal health issues which have resulted in some restrcitions in certain food groups, specifically diary products, wholemeal bread, etc... (kidney deterioration). So now I am restricting even more my intake and I have upgraded my visits to the pool. Because of back issues, I have started my walking routines in the pool and manage to walk 2 km 3 times a week. I feel better and I think my weight seems to be reducing very slowly which is fine with me.

I probably could not go vegan, I like meat too much although I eat it in smaller quantities and usually in processed meat on my sandwiches. My sugar intake is just about as low as possible, I do not drink any soft drinks other than an occasional diet drink. I am addicted to Pellegrino and Perrier. One of my sins is a mango (nearly daily) and some japanese rice crackers. Other than that I might as well join a monastery.

I believe that my low metabolism is a direct result of my dead thyroid and I need to jump start this every morning with just about the max dose (200 mcgrms). I do eat salads and usually go for italian dressing even though I prefer the thick 1000 island dressing.

It is a struggle and what I do not manage to do is to eat 5-6 times a day a small meal. I eat morning, lunch and dinner and then struggle each evening not to go to get some more munchies (other than the mango and/or crackers).

I think I have lost about 5 kilo's by now and it encourages me to continue this. I want to add some additional excercises outside of the pool, and am contemplating some bike and marching on a treadmill.

    Wish me luck.

    Thanks - Nick

  5. I am in an office building next to the Embassy (on the corner of Sarasin and Wireless) and can tell you that there are no serious disruptions here at this point in time. There is a road checkpoint on the corner and that makes for difficult traffic, but other than that the embassy is doing well. Best bet is to stay at the Conrad when you come, it is accross the street from the Embassy (Hillary C also slept there).

  6. This Red Shirt demonstration is about freedom! Freedom of speech, social justice and freedom of the press/TV. these are things we in the West we take for granted! the Thais are demonstrating for their freedom, Democracy, social justice, these are the elements of democracy. The press Thai and International want you to believe it is about Taksin, it is not about Taksin, it is about democracy. The Thai elite have held 24 coo's undermining democracy in this country Thailand. The elite Bangkokians are 20% of the population they own 60% of the income and wealth in this country. It seems it is OK to come and enjoy the hospitality of Thailand, but when Thailand needs support from the resident Farang's who enjoy these simple freedoms in their home country, Farangs turn coward and run to their safety and security of "jeaprodizing their stay visa" in Thailand, cowards! Where did your fore fathers get their freedom? It was never given to them, they had to take it. Go back home and take your pension income, from your rich country with you, or stand up for human rights, freedom and show what it means to cme from a country with democracy, or have you forgotten?

I have been to many countries in my career and can assure you that Thailand has pretty broad freedom of speech. The fact that we can comment, and may I say quite critically sometimes, in this forum, is part of that freedom of speech.

As far as social justice is concerned, that is pretty much in the eye of the beholder.

Take your fight to your own country, the Thais can do it without you.

  7. Where does joining the rally start? I have to ask this question every day before I want to go out. Living in the middle of the rally site at Rajprasong intersection I am right in the middle of the red crowd once I leave the house.

Am I participating in the rally if I buy food at one of the hundreds of little food stalls around offering tasty specialities from different parts of Thailand? Am I joining the rally when I stop and talk to people who approach me generally in a very friendly manner - even if they are wearing red? Am I joining the rally if I go out with my wife because she always asks me to accompany her because she feels scared to go out alone - but once she is out there she always finds friends and acquaintances to talk to - no matter what color they are.

In order to go on with my life as normally as possible I have no other choice than to dive into the red masses down there from time to time. I always take a strictly neutral approach and don't condemn or judge anyone as long as there is no bloodshed. If I am approached by friendly people I don't care what color they wear. With this attitude it is actually not an unpleasant experience to go down there and dive into the red crowd, taste the varieties of food they offer, listen to some music sometimes, watch people dancing and cheering and so many just being happy while I try to neglect all the political propaganda around.

Should I rather sit like a grumpy farang in my apartment and keep complaining about the noise and the mob and hope the government will send in troups to "enforce the law" and spill blood in front of my doorsteps? I have chosen not to do that and I try to make the best out of the situation without joining a particular group.

In one sense I am joining the rally and the people down there to go get some food and maybe some entertainment at times but I am certainly not joining the political propaganda rally - I am not wearing red.

And I still keep praying for a peaceful solution.

I follow you all the way, you have the right approach and no one will blame you!

  8. My Thai wife is going to rally in Bangkok next weekend.

She is NOT paid for it and she bought her polo-shirt and heart-shaped rattle from her own money.

For those who cannot read: SHE IS NOT PAID FOR IT.

OF COURSE NOT !! YOU PAID FOR IT !! YOUR WIFE IS FROM ISAN...RIGHT? POK POK BEER PLEASE

    Stupid comment.

My wife happens not to be from Isaan, but that is not the point.

I can only fully agree that this is a stupid comment, totally uncalled for!

Everyone is entitled to their choice be that red, yellow or other. It deserves respect. Disagreements can be discussed and if there still is disagreement, agree to disagree and move on.

For me, I am quite new and have difficulty understanding the implications of politics here in Thailand. Therefore, I will refrain from making any comments, pro or contra.

(another dutch speaking belgian from Antwerp!)

    :) for jalansanitwong...

  9. My wife and I go to a french hairdresser at the Sofitel Silom Bangkok.

Name is David Drai (at Style Paris hairdresser) and he speaks perfect english as well.

    Coiffeur Visagiste/Specialise Meches & Colorations

Make an appointment (Sofitel extension 1235 or 1236) and he is not cheap!

    :)

  10. I tried sending a message but not sure it arrived as I do not see a copy in sent messages.

I have sleep apnea and di do the sleep test at Bumrungrad. I also bought the machine and now sleep as a baby.

I can confirm that I was falling asleep quite often, even with the mouse in my hand while I was on the computer. Usually after a meal, but it is embarassing if your secretary discreetly closes your door for the mini nap that you have of a few minutes (several times in a row).

Anyway, the test revealed to my horror that I would stop breathing up to 27 times per hour and anywhere up to 50-odd seconds. I cannot even hold my breath for that long...

If you have it, get a machine and get used to sleeping with a snorkel, its not that bad. I also travel with it so no problem.

All I want to try is the one with water, I do get a very dry nose.

Happy to discuss further if you want.

    Cheers

    Nick (59 and overweight)

  11. I had to look up what it is... :D

Never seen it, not in Bangkok or elsewhere, but it reminded me of some of the better french fry dishes you get in Belgium and Holland, fries with flemish stew... :) or for my wife "patatje oorlog" (war fries) serving mayo, ketchup and raw onions :D

I think that the problem already is that one cannot find nice Fries here, at least I have not found them yet (I am Belgian so it is our national dish...)

  12. One further update on my own situation. I went for some health issues to the hospital and underwent a number of tests. One of them revealed a lump in my bladder.

To make a long story short, the malignent tumor has been removed and luckily it was detected early so there is a good chance for complete cure. Will know in the next visits (every 3 months). What struck me was the fact that several of the doctors asked if I smoked or have smoked in the past. I did and stopped in 2003, but it seems the root of evil had already established itself. My mother has the same tumor and she is 83 and still smokes...

Do yourself a favour, read my post above and stop!!!

  13. I just scared about the future, not for me or my job but just for what she is going to do segarding my children

    Dear NFS

I have read your predicament and you have done the right things. I do not always agree with what others give you as advice, but I can agree that the kids is the major worry right now. Contrary to what has happened to some posters here, I was miserable when my parents stayed together because of "the kid" (I was alone). This was primarily because one of them needed to hack in on the other all the time which left me precisely... in the middle, with all the guilt feelings and uncertainties this brought along. I would have wished then that they would have split up and get on with their lives (I was 14 at the time).

I agree that with your situation, your kids will spend much more time with mom than with you and it is important how their mother interacts with them especially about daddy.

I feel for you in your predicament and only time will tell what will happen... or not.

I applaud you on your decision to continue to be daddy no matter what.

    All the best.

  14. I am in love with Indonesian food and am always on the lookout for the spices they use. I love for example the sambal's that they make but have looked everywhere but do not seem to find it. Can someone help please. (Sambal- Brandal, Oelek, Badjak, Manis, etc...).

Also looked for the Loewen Senf (German hot mustard) as well as Picallilly sauce (belgian pickles).

    Thanks a bunch.

  15. I would like to see family-size pasta sauce jars. Between Prego and Nana of similar sizes, I buy Nana. But if there are big Prego jars on the shelves, I buy Prego. Just easier, more economical, and I'm a big eater. I do prefer Nana though.

Pizza sauce in a jar (not can) would be really nice too.

    Interesting.

    Thanks for your input.

    A couple questions:

    1. What flavor pasta sauce do you typically buy in a family-size jar?

(Note: Import prices may have changed recently with fluctuations in the dollar, but last time I checked, I recall it still being cheaper per weight/volume to by 2 jars of our Traditional sauce (2 x 360ml = 720ml) as opposed to one large jar of Traditional Prego (720-800ml??). Anyone know the current situation?)

    2. When you think of pizza sauce, what differences do you associate with that, as opposed to a traditional pasta sauce (eg: sweeter, spicier, less herbs??)?

    Thanks much.

Some of the best home made pizzas I have eaten were made with the typical "Ragut" spaghetti sauce ins tead of tomato sauce, I can recommend it!
