  1. I like most people I know, am also disillusioned with the crappy service True offer.

I have just started researching other options, and have come across JSAT.TV

Looks like it is run by a farang, and appears to give lots of options.

I am going to give them a call tomorrow. Anyone have any dealings with this company? Experiences etc.

Options are what we need cos True in my opinion has just got worse and worse :)

Good solid service, obviously at first not as cheap as True/UBC but in long run most people are far happier, many happy customers in the technical forum praise JSAT JSAT.TV I think is the web site

I had a different experience. The "farang", Jon Clarke, was on holiday when I first called at their place on Sukhumvit 65. After a rack of phone calls and several abortive trips, my wife and I finally got to meet him, cash in hand, ready to buy a dish, and being complete novices, hoping for some kind of introductory explanation of how it all worked, or at least some enthusiasm for a potential customer. If you are intending to equip a hotel, and know what you're talking about, perhaps you get good service. But if you're an average Joe off the street, thirsting for knowledge, and want to buy something for home, forget it. A more surly, contemptuous, why-are-you-wasting-my-time, take-it-or-leave-it attitude one would have difficulty in finding in Thailand. We didn't take it; we left it, and got something else.

Frankly I cannot confirm this at all. I discovered JSAT TV when I was still abroad, and asked them questions via email. I was promptly answered and completely.

Just note that JSAT TV is really an installer with a great internet sales site. The "packages" are mostly the free channels that are being picked up via sattelite, and contain indeed a Dutch Package (1 station BVN), a French Package (1 station TV5) and a German Package (1 station Deutsche Welle), I am not sure what they offer in their other packages, but mostly it is only the free channels. This is what they say on their site about USA Package:

"As the USA is located on the other side of the world, there are no direct sattelite signals available in Thailand (as the sattelite signals do not go through the earth) so we have to rely on what the content providers (ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX etc) are relaying via other sattelites to Asia. This narrows the field down to only a few networks and channels." Primarily you are looking at getting VOA and CSPAN...

I live in a multistory building so do not have a choice in TV connection, the owners also do not want me to install my own sattelite, but I did convince them to install an additional dish that feeds BVN to the whole building, so I am happy.

  2. I also have been having a problem with CAT. Lately it has been constantly disconnecting. I wanted to upgrade to their 1MB wireless system, which comes out to about 10,000 Baht, but it has gotten so bad, that I feel I'd be throwing the money away. They have known there is a problem for months ( this from talking to a CAT employee) but haven't done anything. As long as you pay they are happy, doesn't matter if it works or not. They have nothing to worry about, foreign competition is not allowed, and you have what other choices to select from?

If you are willing to spend that kind of money, take a look at PACNET, I have the ADSL 4M/512K Home package for 6.600 Baht per month and it works great. Good speed and no interruptions.

  3. Oh how this all sounds so familiar... Until 2003 when I decided that I wanted and needed to stop. Problem was I could not as I had been smoking from 1964 until 2003, 30-40 cig's a day (those were the days I could still smoke in my office).

I am sure a lot of folks will probably be all over me, but I did it really with the help of Allen Carr's book. All the while I had also these visions of quitting and craving, but it did not happen. I had always thought I was hopeless, but no, after I read the book, I specifically went to smoke my last cigarette with some reverence and decided then and there I was an ex-smoker. I have not had the crave or any problem since. As a matter of fact, it bothers me now when people smoke and I cannot understand now what I enjoyed about smoking for nearly 40 years.

Do yourself a favor, try to prepare yourself mentally to read the book with interest and a genuine desire to stop, and it will succeed.

  4. Thanks you all for the feedback. It is indeed pure grain alcohol I was referring to and I live in BKK. The problem with Vodka is the additional tastes which would interfere with the brew I want to make.

No harm, I can live without it also, was just wondering.

    Thanks again.

  5. Hey Femmie.... yes if i spend 20000-30000 seems sky's the limit... I think your assment of crap furniture is fairly accurate for lower price rentals. However, I'm abit unclear on your response. Is 7000- 9000 possible based on what I was looking for? If you don't mind me asking what are u paying per month, how many square meters, do u like the location? If i wanted to buy some furniture suggestions as to where i might do so reasonably?

Sorry wetface, was not replying to your post that contains specific amounts, but to the OP and more about how to chekc for a place. My rent is way out of the range you are mentioning, but we look for something completely different.

I went out of town to buy some furniture, but even though I spent a fair amount, I still got relatively bad quality but for a premium price.

In other words, I cannot answer you, I am sorry.

  6. I moved here in July last year, and spent a week reviewing the various flats available. I had a generous budget so saw a lot of premium buildings. There is an enormous choice available and "furnished" appartments usually have crap for furniture, so if you like the place you can always have them take out the "crap".

Take your time as a lot depends on where you will work or have your daily activity, traffic is really bad. The service appartments are a good option when you arrive, you can take your time looking and live relatively good and inexpensive.

I live in Sathorn in an furnished place (condo), but had them take out all and brought my own stuff.

  7. I can only state that my wife goes to Fitness First in Sathorn (Q House) and is very happy with her personal trainer (Bob). Price is all part of a package with a discount if you keep coming (fidelity premium?), so not sure what it is. I believe their internet site will have more info. Since you are retired you could possibly go there yourself to get info. It is by the Lumpini Station MRT.

My wife also goes to Pilatus training on Sukhumvit (above Olive Restaurant) and is also ery happy there, perhaps an alternative although it is a smaller studio.

    Hope this helps

  8. Just want to add my two cents.

I am petrified to go to a dentist, too many horror stories to tell, so when I read about laser dentistry in Singapore, that is where my wife and I went.

Hmmppffrrrr... Be careful, laser dentistry works on small and new cavities. It does not work on an old geezer like me and certainly not on previously repaired teeth, it may reflect off the filling and do damage to the equipment. So get informed first (it is NOT on their internet site).

I ended up taking the "knock-out" method (they put me to sleep) so they could do all the work. Paid my bill (which could buy me a small car in Europe) and flew back to Bangkok.

Teeth are good for a few more years now :)

  9. I am still looking for a way to get some meaningful massage as my back is completely cramped up and I would like to be a little looser to start. I am seriously overweight and have some health issues. I am not looking for further advice on loosing weight, there is plenty available, but am still looking for a place to go to for a massage.

The issue however is that because of my weight, I cannot lie on my stomach, so I need to look for a place that has these massage chairs where you sit facing the back of the chair, exposing your back for massage.

If you would have any ideas where they would give a massage this way, please let me know.

    Thank you kindly.

(nearly 60, 128 kg, totally out of shape) :)

  10. I suggest you contact www.tci.or.th and file a complaint (this goes for everyone on all trouble ISP's)

How to complain, it's all written in thai... :D

    02-634-6000. Call them.

    @akarmaka:

Use a VPN proxy and you should have things loading and working fine.

True always tries to say that the "problem exists at my PC", and they go silent when I say that when I use a VPN proxy everything loads fine.

I have the same question as another poster, how to use the VPN Proxy (provided I understand what that means..) :)

  11. She probably doesn't have a new boyfriend now. She just needed to get over you and have you stop calling. Most Thai women think Farangs are all rich ... and by Thai standards most are.

WHAT IS WRONG WITH A WOMEN WANTING FINANCIAL SECURITY?

WHAT IS WRONG WITH A WOMEN BEING ATTRACTED TO A SUCCESSFUL MAN?

You losers who constantly see all Thai girls as money hungry whores need to grow up and get some self-esteem.

There is nothing wrong with a man wanting a GF or wife that doesn't need to be supported financially or who feels they should contribute very little financially to her or her family ... absolutely nothing wrong with this BUT you are truly a loser if you want to see the girl (in a poor country with little opportunity to make money legally for females) as some evil creature because she wants a man who will take care of her and her parents who raised her.

Relationships don't always work out and I am truly sorry for what you are going through. Sadly many Thai women are shy and have problems expressing their needs BUT she did tell you what she needed and either you didn't listen or care or you couldn't afford to take care of her and her family the way she hoped. If it is a matter of not having the funds then it still may have worked but lying is not uncommon (especially in Thai culture to avoid conflict) and she probably felt you had the money but just didn't think she or her family were worth spending it on.

Consider your GF was also probably VERY embarrassed having a farang BF and having to work for what was no more than 200 bhat a day.

This by ALL means doesn't sound like a situation where she was after your money. Thailand may have cheap rent for a crummy apartment but sending her 10k Bhatt or about $300 US ... how long were you gone? Was she supposed to live on 10k for a month or more? You left her when she had no job ... how scary that must have been for her.

Maybe I am wrong but folks who are unable to step into somebody else's shoes to think of their feelings are clearly self-centered folks.

My gut tells me you could easily get this women back if you can commit to take care of her financially. And offer the parents some funds to not just help them but help make her proud and show her parents she is well and has a good BF who will take care of her. By the way ... do you know the Thai culture and what is expected if you married her in terms of paying off the parents?

You should also ask yourself what did she do for you during this relationship? Who cleaned? Who brought you food and drink? Who took care of you? What did she do to take care of you? Or maybe don't think about this and be like others who post and believe a Thai GF should wait on them hand and foot but have no reward and be forced to sell food on the street to have a few bucks in their pocket and feel even the slightest bit of security financially if you were to leave her as you kind of did a few times.

Even if she was out selling sexual services those nights she was out ... why did she stay with you? Maybe she wanted the money to save face and not look like a complete idiot for being with a "rich" farang but being more poor (in terms of money in her pocket) then she was before she met you.

It is very easy for a Thai girl to be poor and she doesn't need a Farang BF to remain poor. How can she feel secure and loved by a man who is able to travel the globe but can only afford to give her $330 to live on and pay all the bills when he heads off on international flights???

Please don't take my post wrong as I really do feel for your situation and feelings and highly respect your coming to this board to get advice and answers but WE are all a bunch of dumb farangs here too for the most part and my frustration is directed at some of the responses --- not your original post. I am also concerned that you will become like many of these losers here who have predetermined notions of all Thai girls based on a bad relationship or two or three or even four. Since when does every relationship work in any country? Oh but then again maybe that is why they left their homeland and thought finding some poor girl in Thailand would be the answer because she would have to worship them and take a few left over crumbs and be happy even though she might be 20-years younger.

You are in your 20's and sounds like she may be young 20s. How many healthy 20 year old girls in any country don't want to go out and have fun? Have nice cloths? Have money to spend? You sound like you want to settle down and she might want to too but she also wants to have fun before she gets old and if she is going to settle down, she wants to do it with a man she knows will take care of her financially and that she will not one day be left with nothing if you leave. Consider if she takes care of her parents a bit now too that she will have them to turn to if you did leave her.

Bottom line is you are both young, from different cultures, have communication problems and often are forced to be seperated ... this is were the problems are coming from.

And I kind of am missing something about you going to Loas when you come back ... Even most poor Thai girls will prefer to be poor in Thailand and not Loas.

I can only wholeheartedly agree and applaud this honest answer!

  12. If it's owned by an American then i very much doubt it is a 'real' pizza. I always find it funny when Americans say that pizza is an american dish. :)

Have you ever tried Chicago deep dish style or New York stlye pizza? When has an American ever said we invented it? American pizza, yes. The best pizza in the world can be found in Chicago. Oh yes....You're an idiot.

    LOL...

Never been to Chicago, but there is a Chicago Pizza factory in Paris, delicious!

In Bangkok I like Pizza Pizza (Central World and Emporium), Mexicana with delicious onions...
