  1. Three simple questions concerning entitlements when getting one's state pension.

    1) If one live in Thailand with a Thai wife and family and you are eligable to draw your full pension are you entitled to additional funds to support your Thai wife and family?

    2) What is required in terms of proof if you are entitled to additional funds?

    3) What (if any) are the pitfalls?

Thank you for all sensible answers

  2. Change your diet, detox yourself, go on a 10 day meditation retreat at Suan Mokh, Surat Thani where they have yoga at 6am and walking meditation all day and natural hot springs at night. This is a silent retreat. When you finish, have a couple of beers and a soapy massage and you'll have saved yourself a fortune.

biggrin.png That sounds good but the 10 day detox does look to be a little harsh. No problem with most of the program except sitting in the lotus position may be a little too much for my creaking frame

  3. I’m looking for a detox/health break for a week or so in a location in or close to Hua Hin

It’s a present from my brother for a special incremental aging event. icon_sad.gif

As a few of you know I did a private one some years ago and it was extremely beneficial.

There are of course, many resorts and hotels that offer the facility but IMO they are shallow, inexperienced and way way overpriced and aimed at visiting tourists with fat wallets

For me the program has to be in a remote location (akin to a monastery) with no communication with the outside world whatsoever. It has to be a mix of meditation, diet, yoga, massage, swimming, steam and sauna and above all else, complete solitude. Painful I know but believe me, highly beneficial

Any sensible feedback will be welcome
  4. So has there EVER been any positive news reports about Thai Immigration Officers.

I never heard, read, or was told about one.

    Anyways.

Aren't the brown shirts supposed to be responsible for all Non-Thais, or whatever is not born, made, or "assimilated" in the LOS???

So has there EVER been any positive news reports about ANY Immigration Officers worldwide?.

Immigration worldwide have powers that even the police don't have but still seem to have a chip on their shoulders so passengers feel the brunt of their abuse and are treated like 'cattle to the slaughter'

  5. I never "get" these types of topics...I especially never get the

20 or more pages that will surely follow with all the opinions.

First off why do folks post I am leaving X country

Who cares? I do not mean that in a bad way but really who cares?

Especially to post them on a forum dedicated to living traveling in X country why does one feel the need

to post they are leaving X country? Who cares....I am sure you have your reasons

But what makes me shake my head most is the 20 pages that always follows about why the new or returning to the old country is better than X country

It is a silly circular argument. Not all folks are the same...Life is more than what it costs to live somewhere. Not everyone eats the same foods or needs to speak the same language.

Otherwise.... I mean it is Sunday no need to ask about restaurants we must all be eating chicken right? smile.png

Everyone is different, everyone has different requirements & definitions of what is comfortable to them. Comfortable in the ways of

perceived freedoms, foods, people, scenery. What some need others do not. What some want others do not.

Folks on this forum who are leaving always have to make a statement & belittle the place they are leaving with snide remarks

Remarks like those that are here are only here for one reason or are happy with less, pollution, ripoffs etc etc etc....as if any country in the world does not have its warts

Really I wish you all well where ever you decide to live. But not everyone wants to live in the same place.

Those that live in the place you now seem to hate for ever having visited do not need to hear your excuse/reason of why your now leaving. It is not a failure for you to leave.....

Go........Be Happy where ever you can find happiness.

EXACTLY..................If you don't like it, don't winge about it, don't compare with where you come from. Just quietly pack your bags and p1ss off somewhere else. We don't care. Why should we?

Unfortunately YANKs like a really good ale, don't travel well. They arrive flat and somewhat sour. Best off staying in their local enclave as they are not ready to face the big bad world. Still need more maturing IMO

  6. Well Pattaya is known as the toilet of Thailand.

Apart from all the comments you guys from the USA are renowned for being the worst at integrating into any other society or culture. EVERYTHING has to be measured against the 'good 'ol USA'

Personally I've travelled and lived in a few parts of the states and can easily find a better comparison in any part of the world of just about anything the states has to offer

  7. Hi

I'm getting repeated crashes or hangs from use of Shock-wave. I've up to date versions of all software involved. Hit Dr. Google and there's plenty of technical solutions but to my aging PC knowledge it seems a bit laborious. Has anyone encountered the same and solved the solution in simple laymen procedures please?

  8. Looking at the big picture it's called evolution.

It's really a very simple question to answer. Where in the world is life not changing for better or for worse? Some remote parts of Africa, South America maybe but in the big picture the world is getting smaller, we learn more through the use of modern technology and ultimately through exposure to other parts of the globe and through advance media access we want more.

The 'little box' we were born in and lived with our family and friends until we left for our 'little box' in the sky has gone.

Accept it or become a monk/nun and shut out the world. You cannot stop the progress of man and his quest for everything which of course if you are a 'doom and gloom' merchant will eventually lead to self destruction.

So Thailand is merely Evolving IMHO

  9. Seems like another excuse for a 'jolly' by the British police. Probably held a raffle to see who would be lucky enough to travel at tax payer's expense to the sunshine

Having allowed 1400 girls as young as 10 to be seriously sexually abused for ten years, despite being made aware of the abuse on numerous occasions, the British police don't have the highest of credentials, and they haven't been shy of 'fitting up'innocent suspects to close a case

Won't be long before the selected 'plods' will be photographed by a British tabloid with a girl on one hand and a Singha in the other

Hopefully a high quality defence barrister will be appointed who will put to the Prosecution all the difficult, unanswered questions that this enquiry has thrown up

The CID are often here in Thailand investigating issues that are not bandied around on the media. This issue has international media focus on it and will therefore be conducted by experienced coppers who know what the game plan and rules are

  10. I was boarding a flight at Schiphol in Holland when 2 half-drunk guys tried to board with no shirts on...Captain refused to allow them on. They started screaming abuse and ended up being hauled off by airport police. Captain got a BIG cheer from other passengers.

A couple of years back I was surprised, nay shocked, to see about 6 shirtless disembarking passengers in the immigration queue at Swampy. I thought the IO might have something to say about it but they were just waved through. I leave it to others to speculate on nationality smile.png . Any takers?

    Grubsville ?

Grubsville? I would hazard a guess at that being from Yobo county in the UK. I would also hazard a guess they were bound for Pattaya

  11. Yea Full moon parties really need to be banned, its on the tick list for guys and girls in their twenties and a bit more.

They come a long way just to get pissed and act idiots , its got out of had and the drugs don't help either, if a girl loses her friends ,even a guy and goes it alone in the early hours they are at serious risk.

I know that on KPN, taxis drivers get away with most things.

The so called mafia are used to the good life on that island, so maybe too much money involved to ban, lets wait and see, test case pending.

He wants to clean Thailand up , but lets mad drug frenzied parties continue a bit hypocritical i'd say.

Its a foregone conclusion that if he bans the one on Ko Tao, cause of the murders, even worse catches no one, but lets the one on Kpn continue, he will, for the first time, left himself open for ridicule.

Another horrific incident is bound to happen again, its only a matter of time, then what will he blurt out, no more bikini's please !

Isn't it the responsibility of the officials to lay down the law? It's not up to the farang... they will simply do whatever they can get away with. Thai people complain about the sex on the beach and the pi$$ing and $hitting in the sea... surely it is up to them to say, "hey you can't do that, it's illegal and you will be fined, and spend the night in jail." That's pretty well how it works at home, (it's called "policing" and "law enforcement".) This responsibility lies squarely with the Thais to clean it up... it would make a safer place and improve tourism ten-fold.

    Agreed.

Why no police beach patrols? If only to show their presence. Seems they spend more time watching telly in the station or patrolling roads for extra tea money. I know that in the US some beaches are patrolled and visitors are expected to behave. No loud music, no booze and no openly visible sex antics.

I've some awful behaviour on beaches in Phuket, Samui, Hua Hin where parents have had to move to protect their kids.

  12. Hi

My daughter and boyfriend are planning a trip to the above island for some mega chill time. They will be coming to stay in Hua Hin mid January 2015 and plan to go from here to Ranong to catch a 2pm boat to the island for a few days before returning here to take care of this grumpy old man. A couple of questions for those ardent travellers amongst you

    1) Anybody been there and any views/tips etc
    2) Best way of getting to Ranong to hit the 2pm departure

They are both in backpack/budget mode and want to get from HH to the island in a day. They will also need advice about getting back.

Thanks in advance for your responses
  13. You surprise me

Have many US friends who openly critisise their country.

We are all patriotic whichever country we come from but if we are honest we will be the first to complain about certain issues regarding our homelands.

Most critisism is surely aimed at governments not the people.

    But...but....the people elect the government.....

That's one of the country's advantages.

Governments are elected by the powers to be (multi corporations, arms dealers etc). People are 'sheeple' and manipulated by the powers to be, controlled media and all forms of juggling. Many nations are the same but it is blatently obvious in the case on the so called UNITED States of America. Havent met a yank, and I've met many and even lived there, that will ever admit they made a mistake when they voted the latest bafoon in. We Brits are exacly the same.

Anybody who defends their election system is either a fool or seriously mediarised

  14. Sounds to me as though you are 'on show'. Thais are considered one status up if they have a farang in tow. You're an ornament to show her friends by the sound of it

Sorry but have you actually BEEN to Thailand?

Lived here for 15 years. Bangkok, Khon Kaen and Hua Hin. WHY?

Because what you wrote is total drivel.

Don't you think she'd get far more of a boost in status by having a nice, gainfully-employed Thai man in tow than a gormless farang she can't understand?

Most Thais tend to look DOWN on women who knock around with farangs; almost as if they've let themselves down.

I bow to your superior intelligence. You've obviously been here longer than me and have a superior knowledge of Thai culturerolleyes.gif
