If I had the money and was fit enough ideally I'd like the best of both worlds. Time back in my home country (UK) and time in SE Asia (Thailand, Cambodia, Viet Nam). ALL IMO have there benefits and a downside.
The secret is (as someone earlier pointed out) to live life for today and think positively

I have lived in Thailand for nigh on 14 years and most of that time has been in Hua Hin so I have seen it grow from a relatively quiet town to a very busy town in places.
My advice would be initially rent a property not too far from the centre and thoroughly investigate the surrounding area particularly to the south. A reasonable house with access to pool facilities can be had from 15000Bht/month.
If your tastes are not too lavish (golf, bars, expensive eating places every other day) 100K/month is more than adequate.
Despite some who now say it is too busy, expensive and not beautiful I disagree providing you get to know your way around. I am living on very little more than I did some 14 years ago.
By renting initially you gain time to thoroughly absorb all the options and have an easy exit if it's not to your liking.
Enjoy

Yawn - how is this news?
Didn't they say that after the last one, and before this one? Whether or not this is the last coup or the last bar ten will depend entirely on whether the army gets its share of the goodies from whatever excuse for a government eventuates from this mess.
Meaningless propaganda.
Wholeheartedly agree
The title of this thread is pretty meaningless anyway. 'We need to make this the last military takeover'. Excuse me but who is WE?. We are insignificant and are not even present in the big picture of Thailand. Wise up guys please

Reds won't stand for it
I hear a rally is to take place in Hua Hin on Friday led by a monk to petition the King

Used to be similar when I lived in a village near Kranuan (Khon Kaen). In Hua Hin it's just a water slinging match fired up by drunken farangs and young Thais from Bangkok

If all else fails try a salt water flush every morning.
Tablespoon of salt
Pure lemon juice
Pure honey
1/2 litre of warm water
Give it 30 minutes to completely bypass all internal processing and park yourself on the pan

A lot of mud slinging but at the end of the day the OP will probably be better off and more comfortable in SF.
Personally SF is one of the most over hyped, over rated part of the USA west coast and I've spent many years in the USA. Let it be. I've spent many years guiding Yanks through Europe, Africa and Asia who all profess to know more than anyone about places but let 'em live their egotistical dreams. Half (or more) don't even know what their neighbouring state is like let alone the real world.
Just smile and feel sad about them. When the USA global empire has gone (and ALL empires expire) we will feel a little sorry for them no doubt

very typical first time or tourist perspective, only the surface has been scratched.
Agree. You need at least 6 years LIVING here IMO and then some

Of course the CT's will have already labelled this as a CIA/FBI contrived plot to stir it up between Communists and Muslims

All seems to point to a very cleverly planned hijack with at least one government responsible or in the know

Used Rutnin for 3 or 4 years now and never had a problem at all. Tried other places but not found them to be as good and way more expensive. Had both my eyes lasered there and go for routine check ups which involve them consulting my doctor in Hua Hin to ascertain what current medication I am in order to assess any effects it might have on my vision.

The one in Hua Hin is SH*T
No knowledgeable staff and a pain if trying to return faulty goods

I'm owed money by a (so called) reputable Bangkok Business Services group and the debt is now 9 years old. Any recommendations about getting my money back quickly and at minimum cost. Debt is not massive but enough to hurt both pocket and pride. I have a contract signed by the MD. His attitude seems to be that he's paid me my capital back and does not need to pay the interest. I lent him the money to get his company out of a hole. So there's gratitude for you. Those of you who work in the Bangkok business world will know the outfit concernedCheers
My partner does not communicate

Sounds to me as though you are 'on show'. Thais are considered one status up if they have a farang in tow. You're an ornament to show her friends by the sound of it
