  1. Look at India to see what a mess was left behind by a colonizing power (yes, I'm a Brit and not proud of what we did there), 60 years on and it's still broken in so many ways sad.png

Zimbabwe ( Rhodesia ) is another great example.

    Uganda another success story.

In fact the vast majority of colonial Africa is a basket case

Take out New Zealand, Oz and Canada and the rest was an utter failure, but still the colonel blimps come out with this piffle

Maybe because the Colonel Blimps has some idea of history??? How can an imperial power be responsible for bad governments years after their withdrawal? If the country is in good order at the time they leave, they cannot be responsible for policing it decades after.

Zimbabwe was a very wealthy country when England left - it was a member of the Commonwealth and a democracy. It was a tin pot dictator many years later that made it what it is today - and the world watched on (including whatever country you are from!).

Much of Africa was not controlled by the British Empire - many of the "fruit baskets" are ex-French states (just like they were in Asia) - the French just pull out and run and the void is always chaotic. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colonisation_of_Africa#mediaviewer/File:Colonial_Africa_1913_map.svg

because the colonization process destroyed the culture of the original inhabitants

    +1

  2. They would have the problems that exist now, plus a bunch of other problems created by others to deal with.

Not sure if it would be better overall...probably not!

I can't think of any place except for Singapore that is better off today because of colonization. Maybe Hong Kong. Seems to be tiny countries or areas (since Hong Kong is now China, but with a different set of governance rules), take the good and leave the bad when the West shuts off the lights. In those two cases anyway.

Can't think of any better examples in the East anyway.

Not meaning to go offpost about LOS, but Singapore is better off becuase of Minister Mentor Lee, not the British.

  3. We, the British, 'managed' many countries before leaving them to their own devices. Leaving because they thought they were up to running the show on their own or better. Look at Kenya, Zimbabwe, India...the list goes on. When the British were in 'charge' the people had a sense of order........now look at them. Thailand would have had a far better rail service around the country that's for sure.

Rubbish... we left because we felt like it or were kicked out or the motherland couldnt afford its colonies any more [after rape and pilage in most cases that is]!

  4. @ sticky.

It's free for a non tax payer too.................coffee1.gif

so an adult, who has never worked (not paid taxes), and does not intend to work (which is perfectly ok for me btw!), and who is not physically disabled or mentally ill, can get free healthcare in that country u are refering to. i don't believe that.

and if it is true, tell me the name of the country so i can marry a woman there ASAP and start my new cheapo life....

    England......................thumbsup.gif

DO you mean Great Britain/UK per chance?

  5. like laos, cambodia, burma and vietnam??

I would say Malaysia and Singapore did benefit in some way, because of the British there is a high level of English proficiency there and there is also respect for the constitution and the rule of law to some extent.

england was in dozens of other countries . what happened to them?

Well , what happened was, as soon as we gave them back the natives screwed it all up.

Perhaps we were just a little irresponsible in the 'way' we gave them back - especially since it wasnt ours to take in the first place!

Do you think the people and the country as a whole would be better off if they had gone through 50-100 years of Western colonization?

I don't think it would of made things worse!
Lack of a reasonable education is holding Thailand back.
A quality education is the privileged of the empowered elite. The masses do not have access to a decent standard of education, and are socially prevented from benefiting from any meaningful advancement. When will an educated population (an informed electorate), be in the best interests of the powers that be ? Perhaps when the centrally controlled system finds itself falling behind Burma or Vietnam.

Sorry but i believe you are confusing apples and oranges in Thailand by equating educated population with informed electorate. IMO the electorate is very well informed right down to grass roots level,, but that doesn't mean they have been or are afforded a quality education.

  7. If you speak Thai, maybe try teaching them by using both the Thai and english !

Although frankly English with its complex arrangements is more difficult than Thai. [eg; how do we get from go to went??] [err,, go, going, gone!] so maybe the wrote system works for them,, but i would try the Thai translations so they get the gist..

    good luck.

    edit: go-went

  8. Please Gen Prayuth, for the love of Mary, do not relinquish control back to the Shinawatras. All your good work will be undone in days. The good news just keeps on rolling in, something we have not seen since the dark day that Thaksin ascended to power. Hooray for Gen Prayuth!!

Do you really think it was the Shinawatra's that set this practice in motion? Is everything that goes on in Thailand that is questionable a result of the Shinawatras. Get real! The country is corrupt. These generals that have taken over have no perks at all, I suppose. Somehow they all have business interests and get quite wealthy off that and their connections. I can guarantee 100% that all the things such as taking free flights away from Thai Board of Directors is mostly show and that they still have all their perks. Sure all this needs to be cleaned up but don't be fooled by some of their actions, it is partly show, as you can bet they will retain their assets and you will never see an auditing of their assets and how they acquired their money. It is not just the Shinawatras that are the problem.

Maybe we can look at it in the sense of sports with referees..

Do the referees get paid and have perks,, of course they do!

Also, agreed that the Shins cant and shouldnt be blamed for everything.

The system is well entrenched and it will take time and affirmative action to change it.

  9. There are three Air Chief Marshals on the Board of Directors.................

Thanks for highlighting that the Junta are not biased.

Well done and Fab4's example here typifies the anti nepotistic and anti cronyism approach by the Junta. It does not matter who you are or who you support the Junta are doing this for the country as a whole.

This is exactly what has been lacking for the past few years and thanks Fab4 for inadvertently highlighting it.

For the past 100 years I guess....

Good that General Prayuth is doing and initiating so many good things.

He is clearly sending messages to those he feels need to hear them.

  10. Shame on some for spreading rumors.

Thai Airways are broke but as they're a national carrier you'll be fine, and just as well. No rumour mongering at all. Read the news if you are in any doubt as to the dire financial crisis that Thai Airways is in.

Your tickets will almost certainly be honoured.

General P is actually addressing the dire consequences that this is having on the coffers. No one else addressed it. Good on him and the Junta.

Errrr!!! do you understand that there is a difference between 'broke' and 'financial difficulties'... ?

Thai makes profits in some years and losses in others.. like any other business..particularly one in thier line of business.. this does not mean they are broke as you repeatedly are saying..

The Juntas move with the Thai board is to flag to others, send the message, that freebies for freebies sake are no longer.

  11. "Niwattumrong is in the American Embassy"

"Talking of a government in exile via the American Embassy"

This could get ugly. Either Kristie, Obama, etc. will denounce the coup along usual lines (we know what's best for democracy so do what we say, etc.) or they might actually get involved in trying to restore the Thaksin puppet rule, which would be a big mistake.

Thai PM is NOT at US Embassy - Ambassador @KristieKenney: Absolutely false. Do not believe rumors #ThaiCoup #Bangkok #Thailand

Hmmm.. lets wait and see after the dust settles...

Not that i would dare question our friends in Wireless road !!!!!

  12. yea right, what about people travelling around the city, country, arriving at/departing from the airport - what are they going to do, arrest everyone? shoot them? have they thought this through? oh, hang on, of course they havent ... this is thailand.

they have thought it through and also have the required experience... which you obviously lack thumbsup.gif

    Agree with you Naam.

For those inexperienced of you who will be out and about as usual; IF you are stopped by army or police during curfew please keep your attitude in check or you very well may find yourself being detained/arrested as per the Law.

Agree with you guys. no doubt if it happens there will be no end of 'poor me' thread emerge on. TVF in a few weeks/months time when they are released from detention or hospital.

People need to switch their brain on, I realise for some this may be the first start up for considerable time.

Lets hope that there are not as many idiots out there as we think.. although somehow I feel I will be disappointed..

They do need to realise this is not a 'normal' situation and to keep their mouths shut and follow the rules.

  13. Hi everyone. I have been viewing Thai Visa for a few years now but am new to posting comments, so hello to everyone smile.png

My name is Jay and have been living in Thailand for 3 years now.

I am quite ignorant to how this works, in terms of the army taking control. Who controls the army? I always believed that a governent decides what the army can do, so how can the army seize power of government? Who gives them permission?

    Cheers

What is true in other countries is not true here.

The Armed Forces are swear loyalty to higher institutions. A little research will tell you more, many books and other material cover it.

  14. Taking CNN off the air is just plain silly. Even if there is nothing to hide, this will result in great suspicion and an apprehension of ulterior motives. Very foolish.

Farang media offline mean shooting is about to start.

    Textbook procedure.

    Speculation !!

Normal procedure for first day of coup in my experience.

Time to dust off the DVD player..

  15. Havn't I read across here, everything is safe, now it is officially a coup'etat and curfew all over the country would like to see what tourist travels to a country with his children were life is regulated by armed men?

    Many do every day.

    USA - armed police.!

    Singapore

    UAE

    India

    too many to mention..

The curfew and martial law will stop many coming to Thailand because travel insurance is voided.

Have to agree with you Naam.

And for those of you with no experience of curfew; IF you are stopped by police or army please keep your attitude in check or you may well find yourself detained/arrested as per the Law.

  19. CNA reporting that the military is saying airport travel will be allowed -- but no explanation of how transport is supposed to be arranged.

Those with 'valid' reasons to be on the way to the airport [or work for Thais] are permitted to do so.

Just make sure you/taxi/limo does not try to avoid stopping any road check point; army or police or they will stop you forcibly.

Also for those who are keen to venture out as normal and will return home after curfew IF you are stopped please keep your attitude in check.

  20. And what about late international flights?

    be there before 10 PM
