  1. A couple of tips to help the OP. If you are ever listening to the radio again and find it enjoyable, look at the radio's display and normally you should see some numbers which give a clue to the station's identity. If this is not possible, then just continue listening for a further 10 minutes or so and within that time the station will surely promote itself with a mention of who they are. If necessary, once the name and/or frequency of the station are known, then write them down and keep somewhere safe so you don't need to post ridiculous questions on internet forums.

  2. 91.5 signal does vary a lot as you drive around but I wouldn't say that 89.5 is 'always strong' and, in my experience, has just as many dead spots as 91.5. To, me 90.5 has the most consistent signal.

It would be interesting to see how many people actually listen to these local radio stations whilst at home in Phuket? I reckon that many people will only normally listen while driving around and therefore I think having a consistent signal around the island is quite important to the success of the stations.

Anyone know what happened to that DJ on 89.5 (the 'Wise Man' or something?)? He was there at the start and seemed quite good to me but haven't heard him for a while.

  3. After years of using the cheapest shaving foam & razors I was recently introduced to shaving oil and was very pleasantly surprised at the smoother, closer shave and better feeling skin afterwards. Does anyone know where I can buy shaving oil in Phuket? I have to admit that my 'research' so far has been confined to a small branch of Boots.

    Thanks in advance, FB.

  4. The Gazette may be a bit pricey but surely the best option if you want your ad to be read by as many people as possible? Certainly it's money better spent that if you used any other Phuket local newspaper/website combo IMO.

  5. I think one of the major problems at the Bavaria Beer House (?) was that they did not sell German beer, were way too costly (food and drink) and did not have sufficient live entertainment - not to mention poor location. I went once - to never return.

That sounds more like 4 major problems to me and certainly not a recipe for success.

  6. From the comments here, plus other reports I've heard, it sounds like he needs to conjure up some bums on seats otherwise he'll just disappear in a puff of smoke.

What gets me is the number of such ventures which seem to start up here in a blaze of publicity and large investment (eg. this magic show, the brewery opposite Tesco Lotus, Sound nightclub......etc) and then simply either fail to deliver and/or fail completely in a very short period of time. When people are investing so much, you kind of wonder how they get it so horribly wrong?........or is it other people's money that is being spent and they have simply fallen for all the hype surrounding such ventures and invested accordingly? A 700 seat theatre with 2 shows per night?......kicking off in low season? Even someone as ignorant in the ways of business as I am can see that providing 1400 seats per night is overkill to a massive extent and the overheads must be massive.....I bet the rent alone is over 500,000 baht per month.?

Why do people do it - is it an ego thing? Do they just like to see their face plastered all over the local newspapers during the initial hype and publicity period?

I actually think that on a smaller scale, there is a market for this type of show in Phuket but I think this guy is going to struggle to keep things going on the scale he's started on - I hope he proves me wrong.

  7. I saw a new Vegas wanna be Magical Show at Jungceylon by a guy name Joe. I don't know how is it. Check it out and let us know!

    Has that definatly started?

If someone confirms it is on I will try that and let everyone know....

There's a dedicated ticket booth just outside the entrance to the rear section of Jungceylon (near the fountains) which was announcing the time of the next show when I walked past the other day. Didn't pay much attention to the show times but I guess it all means that the show is now up and running. Get in and watch it quick before he does the ultimate disappearing act after extortionate rents and poor low season crowds have taken their toll.

  8. Whats the price of the beer and fish and chips?

    170 baht/pint, happy hour 16.00 - 18.00 100 baht. Fish & chips 295 baht, bangers & mash 295 baht.

    ......+10% service charge.

The fish & chips are indeed very good but alas, I too don't reckon they'll survive.

  9. There used to be a good copy place on Sainamyen road, right hand side just before it meets Rat-U-Thit. Don't know if it is still there or not. Also, I've had stuff copied before at the place that prints english newspapers everyday. They used to be on the small soi off Rat-U-Thit on the right hand side just before Christin massage but I think they have moved to a new place.

  10. The OP asks "what would youve done".

Firstly, I wouldn't have started the whole p*ssing off of Thai girlfriend scenario by choosing to dance with a Farang bird who was coming on to me and who "had obviously had a few drinks". Secondly, I wouldn't bore people with this story.

  11. Can't remember the name of the place but just continue on the by-pass road past Index and immediately before the Esso gas station is a good cheap furniture place. Doesn't look much when you pull in the small forecourt but the building extends way back and they have a huge amount of stuff crammed in there.

  12. I think it only opened at SF Cinema Jungceylon around 10 days ago and just came across it now as I was surfing the cable channels. Reasonable quality and with Thai subtitles - still a sh*t movie though!

The threat to the potential takings at local cinemas (or 'reputable' DVD outlets) is fairly minimal though as there doesn't seem to be any way of knowing the schedule for these cable movie channels, so unless you really want to sit for hours/days/weeks hoping that a particular movie comes on, better to pay your money to the local cinema (or DVD supplier).

  13. A few years ago up near Nai Thon area were repeated signs on some fenced off land along the roadside stating "Notres passing". I used to ride past wondering what these 'Notres' were that would be passing before I eventually realised they were supposed to say "No trespassing".

Also, not a cock-up as such, but "Manita Massage" on Nanai always makes me laugh (as did "Patel Brothers Builders - You've had the cowboys, now try the Indians!" but that's getting even further away from the original thread).

  14. Dunno about that Islander was OK but too much success and it rested on its laurels..

Got served slop in there a few times and stopped going. Not sure if it improved after tho.

First tried the Islander almost 14 years back. Thought the service terrible and the food so-so. Tried again many times over the years as so many people rate it highly. My initial opinion still stands to this day.

You're not alone in your views. I was a regular at The Islander 10+ years ago as it was kind of the default place to go to just off Bangla back then if you wanted reasonable Western grub with no fuss. Personally, I generally found the food and service ok but what started to annoy me was the fact that, despite number of times I frequented the place over a period of several years, the owner never once acknowledged me (even a nod in my direction as I entered or left would have sufficed). To make it worse, there was a table named "The Table of Knowledge" (or something equally ridiculous) which was pernanently reserved for him and his cronies.

Have only been in occasionally in the past couple of years and 'rested on its laurels' seems quite an apt description.

  15. I thought they were quite nice to deal with as well. If someone could please give some directions or a more specific location or street address for the new place I'd appreciate it.

I actually would have thought that there was already enough detail in the posts to be able to find the place fairly easily. However, if you put "Southwind Books Phuket" into Google maps it shows you where they are. The newly opened place is a little further down the same road on the opposite side.

  16. Hello,

I was recently wondering the same myself but happened to stumble across them a couple of weeks ago. They are indeed now in Phuket Town, on the same street (and same side) as Roxy Bar, sort of opposite On On Hotel (if you know where Salvatore's Restaurant is, turn right at the roundabout just past the restaurant and immediately turn right again down the one-way street that runs behind Salvatore's; the bookshop is down here on the RHS, before you get to Roxy Bar).

    Still have loads of books.

    Hope this helps.

    FB.

  17. Everyone in Phuket drives recklessly. Thai and expat alike. Without any fear of be stopped by the police, unless you are not wearing a helmet, then things will not improve. I recently sat my driving test here, Thailand has a very thorough highway traffic code, very much the same as the UK's. It is just not enforced here. Does anyone know why this is. I saw an incredible sight last week, a pick up truck full of large gas bottles and two men in the back smoking right next to them.

lack of intelligence or just plain stupid

    I don't.

  18. Thanks for the tip......I've been looking around for ages for a place that does carrot burgers.

However, shouldn't your advice be to think twice before ordering a burger at the establishment rather than not to go there at all? I know a couple of places that do dodgy pies but I don't tell people not to go there.
