  1. One more nail in Phukets coffin. I used to love Phuket, 8 years ago. Now I recommend against people going there. It represents all the worst aspect of the Thai attitudes towards foreigners, and attracts the tourists looking for the bad stereotype "Hangover II" experience. If you want your ATM card copied, a fight with a Jet Ski operator over damage costs, getting extorted buy a tuktuk driver, and to hang out in Discos full of Eurotrash and Arab posers buying Champagne with stolen credit cards, then Phuket is for you.

And for all the trouble, an old man working a blue collar job gets strung up for being honest.

    Nice job Tourist Thailand.

  2. I don't see any photos of Soi Cowboy or Nana Plaza? That's what most Western visitors want to see. If the want to see old temples, they will go to Cambodia. If they want to see pristine beaches, they will go to Bali or Hawaii or Australia. If they want to go somewhere to get ripped off, they will come to Thailand. Any way, that's what my friends are saying in the US.

Bali bites. Thailand's second tier resorts are better than the best Bali has to offer, and the touts on Bali beaches are far worse than those of Thai beaches. The only place I have ever been with more aggressive in your face touts was Jamaica. And the scams are no worse in Thailand than anywhere. Cambodia has Angkor Wat, sure, and Sianhoukville but if you didn't get ripped off by someone in Siem Reap, then you didn't actually go there, and Pnom Pen is a viper pit.The bottom line is you get what you pay for. I avoid Patong beach and Pattaya like they are infested with zombies, and I never have a bad time.

  3. Think of all the untapped opportunities for corruption! Phuket is a once beautiful islad that is rapidly spiraling into a bad caricature of sin cities. Before you can expand Phuket to it's full potential, how about cleaning up the potential that is already being tapped? Yes, we are reminded of phuket taxi mafia blockades, and every manner of pedestrian tourist scam. You comment as if this were a one time aberration that people won't let go of? It is not. It is a daily routine. How many times have we seen tuktuks blockading the pier, and not because they are mistreated or exploited innocents. They protest because people refuse to pay extortionist prices to a mafia! No my friend. Phuket needs to stop looking up and out for ways to bring tourist dollars back. They need to start looking in, and clean up the filth that is driving the tourist dollars away. I used to go to Phuket regularly just 7 or 8 years ago. I even had partial ownership in a business there. Now I go when I must and I leave as soon as I can. Phuket has alot to offer tourists, but at the same time no tourist wants to deal with bullshit on their holiday. I speak with my dollars, and none of my dollars go to Phuket anymore.

  4. He is foolishly trying to seek justice based on who did what. In Thailand a dispute between two farangs, involving the police, ends with whatever gives the police in the best financial gain. Truth and justice don't enter into the equation, until the tea money math is done, then whatever version of the story best fits the result is deemed the truth.

This is not Thai bashing. This is just the reality of the current system. We may see it as wrong in the west, but it is not our judgement to make. The problems come when people enter the Thai system expecting western methods and results.

  5. Proper MMA guys are rarely our getting drunk or causing trouble, but I'm sure there are exceptions....like Junie. Although his record is 4 wins, 5 losses, so he's not really that much.

Why does everyone except me have ex-SAS or Special Forces friends?

True. That is why I used the phrase wannabe tough guys. In my experience the real tough guys rarely feel compelled to prove it. Usually genuine toughness stems from a life and death need to be tough, not a desire to beat people up. That comes from a deep seated inferiority, and a denial of the fact that you are probably a homo. Why else would you take such joy from rolling around with sweaty guys.

Unfortunately if you are famous enough to be well known there is always someone trying to give themselves a boost by knocking someone else around.

As for the ex SF friends I cant comment other that to say, I met more ex SEALs on one long weekend in Pattaya than when I was working with SEALs in Iraq. Funny thing about all the guys I know who were SF or SAS etc...they almost never bring it up to a stranger on a Song Tao...

  6. Another brush stroke in the painting of Phuket as Pattaya Redux. I was in a bar in Patong a couple of years ago when one of these MMA guys came in shooting off his mouth. He finally ended up getting rough with one of the girls, and unfortunately for him the friend I was with is former British SAS and dropped the guy like a sack of rice. I have personally been witness, as I am sure many of you have, to at least a dozen of these guys mouthing off in bars. They come to Phuket to train in Muy Thai, and start acting the bully. Unfortunately for them the toughest guy in the world can still get his ass kicked by a dozen guys. I find the story this guy is presenting is highly improbable in the idea that he is a completely innocent victim. I think we all can read between the lines here. I have no sympathy for these bully's when they get their comeuppance. I have had too many terrific nights ruined by these wannabe tough guys. I am quite a burly guy, and they will often try to start with me. Unfortunately while I am a big guy, I have been in too many fights for my life and friends lives to get a rise out of fighting for fun.

At this stage of the game anyone who goes to Patong beach is doing so at their own risk. pretty soon all of Phuket will be lost to Russians and thugs. There are no shortage of nice vacation places in Thailand and elsewhere. People need to speak with their dollars and let Phuket fall to the barbarians.

  7. Where the heck did he find (steal) the Tommy Gun? They don't grow on trees.

That's an early version M1928A1 Model.

I was just doing some quick research on some Thompson collectors sites. In addition to the obvious notion that this gun was in the hands of an American GI in the South Pacific, they were extensively shipped to China under Lend Lease, and to Russia under the same program. The Russians had a severe shortage of 45Cal Ammo so they crated and stored them. A large cache was discovered after the fall of the Soviet Union and put on the open market. Purely speculation on my part, but the excellent condition of that gun would suggest it spent alot of time in storage, and with the prevalence of Russian organized crime in Thailand maybe that is where it came from?

  8. Where the heck did he find (steal) the Tommy Gun? They don't grow on trees.

That's an early version M1928A1 Model. You can easily distinguish it by the cocking handle on the top of the receiver, and solid forestock. These were the original model manufactured for the Army and issued prior too and at the very beginning of WWII.

The M1928 (gangster style) and M1928A1 are much rarer than the redesigned M1/M1A1 model with the cocking handle on the right side of the receiver, and modified action.

One Thompson collectors site says that of the 1.7m Thompson's made for WWII, less than 400,000 were the commercial purchase M1928 or the modified M1928A1 model. Properly documented (made legal) that gun is worth easily $20,000+++ and the more history you can attach to it pushes the price up fast. In that part of the world it probably has a storied history. They should post the serial number and try to research what unit it was issued too. You might even be able to narrow it down to a specific unit.

What a crying shame that a collectors item like that will end up getting tossed around by people who don't know what they have.

  9. Here's a solution for the OP.

Sit her down and very calmly tell her that if she doesn't leave you alone, you are going to hijack her facebook and email accounts and send all of her friends and family an email apologizing to them because she has discovered she has a STD... She had to contact everyone because she doesn't remember who she has slept with and needed to warn everyone. That should get rid of her.

Hahaha I actually did this. Even included naked pics of her. In the end it accomplished nothing, but it made me feel better.

  10. Do not accept this from your security guards. Your building manager should speak enough English. Tear her/him a new one.

IF your ex does manage to enter the building again, do no open your door to her. Video her behavior. Call security. Do not answer her phone calls. She will get tired of this behavior.

The main cause of her behavior is probably her indignation that you could so easily walk away from her, she probably thinks she is the 'all deserving princess' and how dare you discard her !

Forget about talking with her father, it's unlikely he'll believe anything you say once your Ex has manipulated her way out of the situation. All this would do is escalate a situation.

It seems as though you are doing the correct things already. Nutty Ex's are common everywhere, you just have to bide your time until the situation dilutes itself...

I had a similar problem. My ex was using my apartment while I was away at work. There is not alot you can do about it because Thia people are so averse to confrontation. As long as the story she conveys to the security guards is plausible, Thai culture forbids them from accusing her of lying.

And if you haven't figured it out yet for yourself I will let you in on a secret. Concepts like "truth", "proper actions" and "justified" are very relative in Thailand. A bold faced lie from the mouth of a Thai carry's more weight than gospel truth backed by evidence when it comes from a farang. Thais will seldom side with the Farang unless they can make money off it in some way (enter the police)

It is also highly likely the male security guards think you are a wimp, because any Thai man would just beat the crap out of this girl. At one point I called security to wait while I got some clothes out of my apartment after my girlfriend (now ex) tried to stab me. The security guard laughed in my face and told me (in a more polite way of course) if I was a real man I would be able to protect myself from a woman. I know you said you couldn't afford it, but having been through this myself I can tell you. Your only options are to ride it out until she gets bored and moves on, or change apartments.

  11. I am O negative but out of the country, wish I could have been home to help.

i am wiating for my mum to wake up in england to let me know what type of bloood i have.

    i was clinically born dead

bit random thing for me to say but it is true.

there u go a useless fact about bigc

my blood is clean though. i have just recently had a baby so they checked my blood when my misses was pregnant.

my misses is o negative but she is too thin to give blood.

i hope i get my result back soon if so i shall rush down the hospital

If you want to donate blood, go do it. It takes any hospital less than 5 minutes to type and screen blood. Most hospitals are always happy to take blood from anyone willing to give it. Rare types in particular, or O Neg because you will be the most in need when the time comes. O Neg is the universal donor, anyone can receive O Neg blood, but the flipside of that coin is O Neg can ONLY receive O Neg blood. It is not a terribly rare type, but when you need it, it is the only cork that will fit.

Absolute classic if the Thai cops talking all seriously at the press conference and the bloke suddenly goes " PEEKABOO!"

Plus I see a local songtaew driver's just wandered in at the back to see what all the fuss is about.

:cheesy: You have to love the Thai trophy pics where everyone wants in. This one must of been taken during the lunch break as normally the room is full and shoulder to shoulder. Personally I do not agree with the Thai authorities parading "Suspects" before the media for trophy pics. How many innocent people have been named and shamed in this manner? These pics say guilty before thier day in court. This guy may very well be guilty but wait until proven such before parading people

Absolute presumption of innocence is a purely Western construct. Even in that context, once you confess to a crime as this guy is reported to have done you go straight to sentencing, your day in court is waved and presumption of innocence is nullified. That said, in most countries being caught "red handed" is enough. When in Rome, do as the Romans. In Thailand,a guy caught taking money out of an ATM followed back to his room where he has buttloads of stuff for making fake ATM cards, and then confesses to that act, by Thai standard is guilty and not entitled to the presumption of innocence.

I am neither a Thai basher, nor an apologist, but I am continually baffled by the people who choose to live in a country with markedly different social standards and then protest it.

  13. It's the tourist's fault, if he hadn't have been there it never would have happened.

Good point...stop going there. Phuket in General, Patong beach in particular is rapidly spiraling out of control. It is becoming indiscernible from the cesspool that is Pattaya. Speak with your dollars. Boycott Phuket! There are plenty of nice places with pretty beaches filled with people who are happy to get our vacation dollars.

  14. If anyone is stupid enough to send money to a Thai girl they get what they deserve. From my experiences, the non-bar girls are no different from the actual bar girls.

Seconded. My last two girlfriend were non-bargirls. One of them quite wealthy, never really hit me up for money, but was a colossal PITA.

My last GF was an educated well employed girl. Recently she plugged her iPhone into my computer to charge, because she forgot her plug. Well. My iTunes downloaded all her pics automatically....Including the ones of her naked in bed with other guys... In the end her position was that I was the asshol_e for looking at her personal pictures. She even went through a period of denying that the pictures, in her iphone, were actually of her. Her final stance was I was her only boyfriend, those were gigs she just nailed for fun while I was away at work.

The short truth is the cultural divide is too wide. Successful relationships are the exception not the rule. Stick with the bar girls. In the end they wind up being cheaper than the girls you don't pay for, and you aren't broken up about it when they run off with another guy.
