  1. Lannarebirth,

There was lots of other useful wood which I didn't receive as the forestry official who was present said it was too difficult for him to scale properly.

What was the forestry official's involvement?

We have some teak trees on our farm and would like to plant more, as well as eucalyptus, however my wife has been told that permission must be gained from the government before you cut any teak. If it is for your own use, they will ok a limited amount of the timber but if the purpose is commercial they veto it. Our plan therefore is to grow only enough teak for our "retirement home" and the remainder of the farm will be eucalyptus (commercial purpose).

  2. Hello Sly,

Further to my earlier posts; the refinery in Nong Bua is close to our farm but it will not be completed and operational for atleast 2 years. We have moved to Bangkok from Nong Bua as we wanted our young son to have greater educational opportunities, certainly in his formative years, than the local schools can provide. We gave alot of thought to the sugar option but finally decided that it is too labour intensive, especially at harvest time and we always have difficulty getting reliable labourers when we need them. We do not require a reqular monthly or yearly income from our land so our options are greater than many of the local farmers.

We are going down the long term plantation route of eucalyptus trees, I know about the possible negatives of this (soil degradation etc) but have also read and heard the counter arguments. Specific purpose plantations for paper production do assist in the long term re less demand for old growth trees etc. The paper production (Double A) company give assistance in the provision of seedlings and the harvesting when it is time eg 8+ years, so less reliance on local labour (including family). After 6 1/2 years living in Nong Bua my wife and I are comfortable with this decision. We asked our share farmer (he grows rice on some of our land) and his advice was to grow eucalyptus, to avoid reliance on local labour!!

  3. I recently completed a contract in Korea and I enjoyed my time there. My wife (Thai) and 3 year old son were with me and we did not experience any problems, the people were very friendly and several of my students took us out for dinner, sightseeing etc. on weekends.

I worked for a relatively big organisation in Seoul, I believe most of the "horror stories" involve small businesses outside of Seoul. I was lucky because I worked 1:1 with Korean adults and the majority of the work was helping them improve their conversation skills and pronunciation. They are very keen to learn because they pay alot to have 1:1 sessions with native speakers. I am back in Thailand due to family commitments but I wish there were similar opportunities here. However, the pay would never match what I earned and saved in Seoul.

We spent six months in Taiwan in 2004 and it was a very different story. The people there were blatantly unpleasant to my wife and the students lacked motivation, though they were high school age rather than adults.

    try

    http://www.maxnettv.tv

Tried the abobe, all I got was a black screen. Is there something I have to allow in the Browser settings?

The site's background is black and it does take sometime to load, perhaps google maxnettv.tv and try the link from there? The site works for us, the reception for TITV and Nation is far better than via our actual tv.

  5. Farmer Joe,

If you 'google' rabbits and Thailand, you should find some information about a number of European countries that have investigated Thailand a as source of rabbit meat eg. setting up purpose built rabbit farms and processing facilities. They did not receive much interest and I certainly agree that except for a very limited farang demand there would be no local market opportunities. The fur has some possiblity, however several provinces in China are producing rabbits for fur and thus making it an uneconomical venture for others.

  6. In Chiangrai Province there is a place up in the hills called Doi Salong. It is inhabited by the descendents of the Kuo Min Tang Chinese who fled China when Mao Tse Tung took over the country in the middle of the last century. They have a thriving tea industry and I'm sure you could get what you need there. It's also a very pleasant place to visit.

    chownah,

Many thanks for this information, I will pass it on to my boss (wife).

  7. My understanding is:

If your work permit is canceled by the employer and you are on a B visa, you have 7 days to leave Thailand or obtain a new position that provides a work permit. However, if you have an "O" visa it remains valid because it is not dependent on it.

There is no doubt that it is best to continue with your "O" visa and just have the work permit application submitted to the Department of Labour. The school has to do this for you as they have the required documents. If your school refuses to get you a WP and continue with your "O" visa, find a different school, I believe this would be a sign of more trouble to follow! It is a seller's market.

So, not bad performance on the SET, but we are realistic at what can happen.

securing profits never impoverished an investor

    Seconded.

If Samram feels nervous, he could sell 30% (which is pure profit) and keep the rest with a stop loss of 10-15% of the remainder stocks.

In that case you're secure and always win.

    LaoPo

    I agree.

I am interested exactly what constitutes the "panic" selling point, in other words when the shit hits the fan? For example, is it another coup, the Chinese market dropping 5% or 10% ...in a day or over 3 days; perhaps Wall Street dropping 5% in a day? OPEC announcing a severe cut back in supply......? This is a very subjective issue, therefore different people will have different sell triggers.

Investing, as compared to speculating, is about controling fear and greed; it is about being able to sleep comfortably at night. If you are nervous, follow LaoPo's advice and then research your next investment opportunity.

    Relax and be happy.

  9. stepenwolf1958,

You are a sad, bitter and twisted individual; I honestly feel very sorry for you. Life is too short, try to be happy.

I am here almost full year

THAIS LIE(lie of Thai woman all)...

Why do you stay if you have such hateful feelings towards Thais?

  10. Isn't the OP married to a Thai? Why does he need the work permit - except if it's just to cover his working for his wife's company if the police come around, and totally unrelated to the visa extension?

Agreed, my understanding is that this is exactly the reason he needs a WP. A WP is required to work for your wife's business and is not related to a visa extention ie Dept of Labour vs Dept of Immigration

  11. My rule is no beer until 6pm but after that the Leo is consumed with ease. There are no other farangs around our village/town so I happily drink with my wife and friends on our front patio. I have no shortage of drinking companions and they do buy some beers as well. I must admit that I have been drinking beer with ice added for several years, however I would have been lynched if I did that in my previous life in Oz.

  12. Sunbelt did say she would need 2 thai employees, besides herself. Then you could qualify for a work permit. But, I don't think that, on it's own, qualifies you to stay on an "extension for marriage". You could have an "O" visa, but to get an "extension" based on marriage, I think you would still need to show 40K. Correct?

Therefore, I can have a work permit as outlined by Sunbelt and continue applying for multiple entry "O" visas annually re visiting my wife and son, until I am 50 (2 more years). At this time I can apply for "O" visa extensions based on living with my son (Thai birth certificate and Passport) or have I not considered something?
