  1. In my limited experience of Thai parent / child relationship, The parent wants the best for their kids and to set them up for life properly. The more successful the children the better position they will be in to take care of the parents as time goes on.

I think that envy is in all cultures I certainly know it is in mine. Most families have a cretin amount of sibling rivalry, particularly among sisters! Or sister’s in law!!

Buddhism is the pursuit of happiness, but not by traditional means or standards. Personally I think the core teaching is that nothing is “Permanent” so we can be happy in the “now”. This is why many Thai people don’t plan / save /think too far into the future.

To think Buddhism is about “suffering” is like thinking that Christianity is about “sin”.

Thankfully my girlfriend is not over the top on the jealousy bit, we have had our rows about it, but she has no problem with me looking as long as I am not drooling.

But how many of us would be impressed if our GF was eyeing up some other farang while in our company?

Wolf is right! Its time for a pint and as we say in Ireland “Fxxx the Begrudgers “

  2. Hi All,

A friend (yes a friend) is starting to think he may need a Private investigator to check up on his girl friend. I am of the opinion if he thinks he needs a PI, he already knows the answer, but he has a lot of emotion and some Bath invested in this girl. He goes to Thailand about every 2 months to meet with her for a week to ten days.

Have any of you used a PI to check out a girlfriend? What was your experience with the PI. Was it expensive?

  4. Hi All,

I am considering opening a bank account or two in Thailand, one joint account for TGF and myself, the other account for myself to hold and build a nest egg for the future when I can go to live in LOS. I travel to Thailand a number of times each year.

Any recommendations on a good bank for this purpose. What documents will I need to open a bank account in Thailand? Do the banks offer online banking?

  5. When you get to LOS open your Thai bank ac then transfer the money from your father in law's account BACK to your UK account and then to your Thai bank ac. Apperantly it is important to show the money came from outside Thailand. When you make the transfer get the UK bank to make a note with the transfer that it is for purchase of condo. I understand that you can own a condo in your own name if it is not on the ground floor. regards and good luck. ps. let us know how you get on.

  6. I have 2 children from my first marrage Girl age 15 and Boy age 8. I have joint custody of the kids i have them 3 days one week and 4 days the next. My ex lives in the same town with her new partiner. We are on good tearms.

Problem: My daughter in particular is not at all impressed with my Thai girlfriend, i do not think it is personal to her, but the fact that she is Thai ( her mother may have had some influence in her view) My TG was here for 3 months on a holiday visa and is now back in LOS and i am trying to arrange a longer visa for her.

There was no hostility from my daughter to my gf but there was no welcome for her either. she treated her with indifference and regularly ignored her. This caused problems between me and my daughter. i love both my daughter and gf i would like any advice or help you can offer on how to deal with this.

  7. Hi Redbyte,

Shipping large items from Thailand is a different ball game than posting a small item. I import furniture from Thailand and some of the things you have to consider are :

Lead times, factory production usually 6 weeks, shipping 4 to 5 weeks depending on destination in europe.. THATS 3 MONTHS from your order to the factory to your goods arriving.

Special licences are required in Thailand for the movement of "Teak" be carefull or you will have to pay more.

When a container arrives at port in europe you have only a short time to unload it or you will have extra charges. You will also need storage for the goods.

All containers with furniture have to be fumigated by pest control before they leave Thailand.

You will need capitial to finance the long lead time cycle.

I use Evergreen shipping, it costs about €2000 for 20ft container and €4000 for 40 ft.

There are regular trade shows in "Bitec" for all sorts of goods from Thailand. look up th Bitec web site for list of shows.

I hope this is some help.

  8. Hi All,

I am attempting to learn Thai or at least some of the basics. I have got a home study "Linguaphone" course with book and CD's. On my last trip to LOS i went looking for a talking dictionary designed for faranf to learn thai. All that appeared to be available were the ones to help Thai people learn english. I would like to find one that if i input the Thai word in phonetic spelling i will get the english meaning. eg input "dii" result "good". also if i input english word i get the thai word with phonetic spelling and pronunciation. Asking for too much??? Any suggestions ???

    Have a Happy....
