my car in UK is an M5 mapped to 700+bhp.  the cost of one here is way beyond my means and even if it wasn't, the thought of my missus behind the wheel of that on her thai licence is too terrifying to contemplate.  we have a slow, boring yaris here ????

yep, I went from my BMW 535i Sport to a Toyota Vios.  I don't regret it, it's perfect for this place, as I no longer worry about getting dents in Supermarket car parks, but I do miss my in-car toys.  I have a radio/CD player and that's about it.

"If we make a choice, any choice, we have to live with the consequences" ... that statement is way beyond a scammer at an airport.

Your words, not mine. Any misfortune that befalls someone is due to their choices? You seem to believe that anyone who falls on hard times only have themselves to blame ... doesn't ever cross your mind that you can end up in a bad way through no fault of your own ... or that you could also end up in a situation where you rely on the kindness of others?

Going back to the original post, which I was replying to and that you conveniently ignore, you don't end up trying to scam people at an airport. Statements need to be in context, not taken out of it.

  3. It is always sensible to print out an e ticket, mistakes happen, especially if you used an agent to book, although I see that you said you booked directly with the airline. Print a screen shot of the ticket if you can't find a print icon, although it must be there somewhere.  if all else fails, just take a photo of the PC page on your phone or have the e mail itself handy on your phone.

Yes, the op is about a beggar in an airport but your post #11, which is the one I replied to, wasn't about the airport beggar, it was about seeing someone down on their luck in the street. No-one knows how that person got to where they are now, to just dismiss it as a poor life choice shows a lack of empathy in my opinion.

It's not just a lack of empathy for westerners in Thailand in that condition that end up begging here, I have no empathy for them at all.

If exports take a huge dive, which they will with the exchange rates as they are, compounded by a tourism drop which hitting bars, restaurants, and the sex trade moving overseas the Thai government will have to do something.

Hurt the rich Thais or stop the slide, tough choices ahead!

They are not noted for doing what is sensible and rational.

And you don't think that there are any circumstances where a choice made by somebody else can effect your life?

I didn't say that.  I'm talking about choices made by an individual that results in consequences to that person, not decisions made by others that may impact on an individual.  There is a huge difference between the two. Either way, I would not give to an unknown stranger in an airport, or anywhere else for that matter.

So you are saying that he is a run-of-the-mill politician. No different than any other politician.

well he is an arrogant, self absorbed, hypocritical, pompous, entitled individual, with no real principles, apart from his own self interest, so that sounds like a normal politician to me.

  8. It's no wonder Thai people can't learn anything useful from foreign made programmes on Thai TV, the dubbing of these programmes is inaccurate, incomplete and in the case of movies, destroys the very essence of the film. They even dub nature programmes with stupid phrases and irrelevant dialogue and even with my limited facility in Thai, I can tell that the dubbed version is not at all accurate to the original.  And seeing Tom Cruise dubbed out by some over macho, deep voiced 'actor' is hilarious, if it wasn't so pointless. If they have to dub everything, they need to put in subtitles in the original language, so that those that can understand, be in English, Korean or Chinese, get the real dialogue.

  9. Sorry to disappoint you OP, but I think you are going to find it extremely difficult to get a visa for your G/F at this stage.  Your finances, and hers for that matter, are going to be a real issue. You can certainly make a good argument for her returning to LOS after her visit, her job and her son, who she supports, are good enough reasons, but I would suggest that your ability to sponsor her would be weak. Your son is a none starter as the prime sponsor,  but could maybe add support your position, but it is still a weak situation. A friend of mine has had his G/F (as was, they are married now) visa refused 3 times, despite her being a company owner, a graduate, and her B/F (husband) a teacher here working for the government. Of course, nothing is certain  and if you can bear to pay the cost of an application that you may forfeit, you never know until you try.  You would be in a stronger position once you are married. Best of luck.

A year ago arriving at Danang Airport in Viet was approached by a young guy, German I think, who was having problems accessing money from an ATM. It was a Cirrus card, not Visa or MC, and not listed as being usable on the ATMs. When he said he used the card ok in Thailand, and he hadn't paid his USD 30 visa on arrival in Vietnam but Immigration allowed him out to access money first, alarm bells sounded. He said he only ever travelled with one card over the past 3 months and the card looked like it had had a lot of use, very worn looking.. I saw it as a scam and suggested he get some money sent Western Union from family or friends. Who travels from Europe or anywhere with only one debit card and no credit card?? I was almost going help him with a $50 handout until I saw warning signs of it being a scam.

I wouldn't even bother talking to such people. They've all got one sob story or another.
