  1. You can rent mail boxes at the postoffices, if the local office has none available they advise you to go to the main postoffice not far from the railway station.

Safe ? In three years time I received 3 or 4 letters/postcards from others and one (rather important) letter from my pension fund got lost.

Cost, very cheap, as far as I remember 300 B for key deposit and 160 B rent per year.

  2. There is a Canadian head pro at The Highlands...i think he charges 1500bt per hour

That's about five times what a Thai pro charges, I hope he is five times as good as well :o

  3. Have TOT adsl the silvercyber package close to Chiang Mai Land.

Network down from saterday to sunday. Looking in the log of my router D-Link G604T: it was consistently due to authentication errors with messages like CHAP autentication error , disconnecting etc..

It seems their authentication servers were down or flaky or that they had a RADIUS problem which can bring down large parts of your network.

They use that silly authentication with phonenumber@silvercyber etc

  4. What about around nine ?

No need to reserve a tee time as it is very quiet at the moment, which makes it comfortable to play also for (very) high handicappers like myself (around 30)

We'll see who else shows up.

You can ask the staff if Joop is around, they know me, but not because of outstanding golf performance :o

  5. QUOTE

So - since the problem is obvious for everyone up here, I don't think it makes sense to throw around more statistics and studies the details of which can be discussed 'till kingdom come and the interpretations of which are not going to convince doubters on either side. I apologize for even starting to go down that road. It's pointless. Use common sense and look around, that's much more informative than any study.

    UNQUOTE

I apologize, sorry to disturb your preset opinions with facts. :o

  6. QUOTE

What I would say about the Thai data is that the incidence seems to be higher up north than in Bangkok. But the chart doesn't indicate if the figures are percentages, total number of cases or cases per 1000. Still hard to say. The data for cases outside Thailand also looks highly selective. Black males in New Orleans would be more comparable on the basis of per capita income, but that's a tiny subset of the total population. I'd like to see the incidence of cancer for all males in New Orleans and for the US before saying that the industrialized world has higher cancer rates than Thailand.

    UNQUOTE

Cancer is highly dependent of age, so if you compare "old"countries like in Europe with "young" countries serious differences will creep in, that's why all numbbers are calcaluted back to a standard population to make it possible to compare, ASR: Age Standarized Rate, aantallen per 100.000.

De figures voor New Orleans are the extremes.

Here some more general data for some european countries.

    cancer-europe.jpg

The european numbers are deaths and the Thailand are Incidence at a Mortality/Incidence rate of around 70% you would have to make some corrections.

Numbers for more agricultural societies are much better like Portugal or Greece.

  7. quote

That would be a definite yes. There are statistics on lung diseases which were quoted in another thread on the topic, and Chiang Mai had a 6 times higher total number of cases than Bangkok. At maybe 1/10th or less the number of people living in CM, that's a very clear statement.

    unquote

It seems this statement is somewhat funny, do you really beleive that lungcancer figures in Chiang Mai are 60 times higher than Bangkok ??

You should try to find more reliable sources of information than the chaing mai mail or similar.

Lungcancer in the insustrialized world is much higher than here in Thailand and even here in Chiang Mai.

    lungcancer-thailand.jpg

Even if the data are about 10 years old it will not have changed too much, data from Thailand cancer institute.

  8. A lot of discussion is always going on about air pollution in the Chiang Mai region, but so far I have not seen any numbers attached to it.

Does anyone have pointers to real measurement data as a quick search I did, did not come with anything usefull.

  9. Just a couple of days ago (after my old USB modem stopped functioning) I bought and installed a new ADSL Firewall Router Modem Netgear DG834. I'm connected to the TRUE. My question is about the strange amount of sent and received traffic that shown when clicking on the double monitor icon (in the system tray). First of all, my old USB modem showed the traffic in bytes, and the new one is measured the traffic in "Packets". Aside from this, the Sent traffic is much larger then the Received. It supposed to be the opposite, isn't it?

    Here is how it looks:

    Capture2-23-07.gif

Is something wrong with my system?

    --

I also subscribed and received some strange emails from the modem:

Subject: NETGEAR Security Log [ac:93:a7]Sun, 2002-09-08 12:00:19 - Initialize LCP.

Sun, 2002-09-08 12:00:19 - LCP is allowed to come up.

    Sun, 2002-09-08 12:00:19 - PAP authentication success

Sun, 2002-09-08 12:00:25 - Send out NTP request to time-g.netgear.com

    Thu, 2007-02-22 01:45:45 - Receive NTP Reply from time-g.netgear.com

    Thu, 2007-02-22 01:45:20 - Router start up

And every couple of minutes it sends reports that email was sent successfully.

It looks to me that the system is not infected at all. The OP obviously does not have a clue what is going on and calls every message from the router an “email”.

As cdnvic already pointed out the NTP (network time protocol) connections are nothing to worry about.

Blocking all sort of ports, how usefull sometimes, seems a bit risky for this user as he might end up being unable to use the smtp port at all and not send any email any more.

About the lot of sending, this one is easy, look at you posting, the picture shows that you are looking at the Ethernet side (connection between the router and your PC, 100 Mbps) and of course if you are supposed to be receiving a lot and sending less, the ADSL-modem has to do the reverse.

It is sending a lot (to you) and receiving much less.

  10. My grilfriend wants to visit Holland next april. And next februari I will be in Thailand and want to prepare all things for this.

The Dutch governemental website has this list of requirements

    * He has a valid passport

    * He does not constitute a risk to the public order, national security or the international relations of one of the countries of the Schengen territory

    * He has sufficient funds

    * He has medical travel insurance

    * If he comes to the Netherlands for a medical treatment, he must be able show that the Netherlands is the most suitable country for the medical treatment

First I'm not sure what 'enough funds' mean. But on the Dutch version of this site the list is slightly different, there it says it's also an option for a 'personal guarantee' or something. And the insurrance, is it easy to get one in Bangkok?

Anyway, has someone experience with getting people to Holland? I really like to know!

Take a look at the site:

    www.buitenlandsepartner.nl

it contains lots of information regarding tourist visa (Schengen visum) and information you might need further down the road like "inburgering" "MVV" etc.

    Very active forum as well.

    Good luck, Joop

  11. When is the date? Provided it's not tomorrow (or rather today, the 15.) - I seriously consider showing up ... On one condition, though - the first time i see the slightest notion of the beginning of a grin due to my awkward attemts trying to hit the ball, I'm free to go home without being stamped as impolite.

3rd October. And to answer another question the total cost I don't believe will exceed a thousand baht.

From my past eperiences there I think that its 300 Baht for 9 holes (probably all we will need)

200 for a caddie and 300 to hire clubs, and 100 baht tip for caddy. They have a restaurant, serve good coffeee and you can buy extra balls and cold drinks to help you on your way.

Prices may have gone up a bit since I last played 2 years ago, but I would not have thought by much.

Maybee someone who has been more recently can confirm these figures.

Oh and Rishi, all the gawaffs and grins will be aimed in MY direction ...not yours so don't worry about it :o

Tee time can be anytime we like, but really the earlier the better due to the heat :D

Just came home from a round at Gymkhana.

The greenfee is 300 B for 18 holes, caddyfee 200 B, with 100 tip the caddy will not be very happy.

The course is in reasonable condition, in comparison with other more modern courses still very much prone to casual water and mud, but the cosy 19th hole makes up for it.

Greens very soft and a few in bad condition.

Still a good choice for a beginner's round, Joop

  12. The insurance agent I dealt with recommended NSI (now LMG) over BUPA. He told me they offer more coverage for less money. I am 61 years old and my annual premium is about 20,000 baht per year. I have the Executive package with a rider that is about as expensive as the basic package. The rider is supposed to cover whatever the Executive package doesn't. The policy pays a maximum of 1,250,000 baht per occurrence. I have had one claim. Last fall I had acute appendicitis and the hospital bill was 48,000 baht. The policy paid all but 15 baht. I don't know what the 15 baht was but I didn't complain. :o

Sounds like a good policy, do you have a website address for them?

Their WEBsite is not functional, but the firms seems solid though. I renewed my policy last month, age 60, payed 50.000 but for one of their top packages (I hope) lifetime garantee.

    Their email does work

  13. So does the ESRI maps speak Thai?

How much is the Garmin with ESRI maps loaded? How much are the ESRI maps alone?

Still trying to figure out if it's worth getting it in Europe and have the software updated in Thailand or just get the whole thing in Thailand.

Bought my 320 in february, it came with the Thai map loaded in Thai, on the CD however was Thailand City Select 6.7 both the English and the Thai version.

It was easy to switch, if you buy a bigger SD card you can have both maps in the 320 and switch between them.

I bought it here http://www.gadgetrend.com/ and found them very helpful. Joop

  14. Anybody have first-hand knowledge of the new Highlands Golf Course, which supposedly was to open in December?

Also, about how far past the turnoff for the CM-Lamphun GC on route 1317 is the Highlands?

    Thanx.

The course is about 9 km along the 1317 road, actually 600 m after you pass the road leading to the hot springs the course is at your right on the 1317.

The place is still under construction for roads, houses, etc but the course is finished and in perfect condition.

Played it a couple of times and it is really a beautiful course.

If you are a resident with some kind of long-stay visa or WP, there is a promotion now in the low season of 960 Baht including caddy fee, which is a very good deal.

There are 7 other courses participating all for the same price, o.a. Gassan Khuntan, Green valley, Royal Chaing mai etc.

    have fun, Joop

  15. Well it seems that a few of the TV members like to join for a round of social golf at Gymkhana. I would like to join, have been playing a couple of years bit still a high handicapper.

What about coming Wednesday or Friday morning ?

    Joop

  16. To follow up... K.w been telling me that there is a new (or so it seems) fresh fruit and veg market just opened up just before the turn off at the Highlands Golf Spar resort on the San KP Road..?

Although its about 35 Cliks outta C.M its a quiet road and could make a nice day out.

One day in future when I get organised I will do the TV BBQ at our place in Mae On....but as they say ...not yet...

Also last visit to said Golf club it was ready to open and believe now it has ...anyone been-seen-visited?

The owner told me that they have plans for a clubhouse (got Hon membership)a hotel and a load of new Hi-So Houses...bit peng @Bt.10 M. plus so should be looking good.... :o

Played there yesterday, without question the most beautiful course around CM, some say even better than Santiburi, and as a bonus very quiet.

The clubhouse is still under construction, but will be big. The temp. clubhouse will be sold later on as a house after some reconstruction.

The place is owned by the Thaksin clan, so perhaps you spoke with the farang manager.

Did not notice any fresh market nearby, but can easily have missed it.

  17. Got my Triton a couple of weeks ago, 4 door, 4WD, automatic, 3.2 Had ordered a Vigo first but delivery was postponed three times so I cancelled and was driving a Triton one week later.

Liking the design is very personal, I do prefer the triton over the vigo, I find that car massive/aggressive without imagination but I went for it anyway because it seemed to get better ratings in tests.

Probably the engine and gearbox are somewhat smoother and more quiet. There is certainly a lot of power but in the Vigo as well.

I am very satisfied, the car drives rather close to a non-pickup, well .. .. sort of. I have driven 1400 Km so far and the beginning has been rather carefull and be nice to the car, it uses 1 liter on 11.7 km over those 1400 km driven in Chiang Mai city and the countryside.

No regrets about not waiting for the Vigo.

  18. You should realise that the course is more or less unplayable, after the floodings in august and september it is unbeleivable how little progress has been made to restore it.

I played there a couple of weeks ago and stopped after 9.

The greens are o.k as most of them are somewhat elevated, the fairways are for a large part mud/sand with some green stuff at some places.

Hole 6 is the only one that is in normal condition, hole 9 is in part in very good condition, but I was not allowed to use it but had to tee-off in the direction of hole 1 and play it against the traffic. The repaired parts are also used as cricket field and restored for the Chiang Mai Sixes in april.

For the rest you tee-off, the caddy finds the ball and start looking for something green within walking distance and gives you a smile and a jai yen yen and off you go again.

It seems they charge normal prices still.

Was ther again last week but no change visible, so settled for lunch. It really is a pity as it was/is such a charming place.

  19. It is normal for a non immigrant visa stamp to alert you that the normal 30 day extension you may expect when using a tourist visa is not available.  Should not be a problem for your extension of stay.

Thanks Lop for the fast answer, it is good to see that I do not have anything to worry about, as I quit the job and the house is sold I have passed the "point of no return" so thanks again, Joop :o
