  1. Note that an actual person at the receiving bank must look at all incoming wire transfers.

So, if it's the day after a holiday or weekend then it will take longer.

Usually with SCB if they receive the wire in the morning, someone at the bank has already credited it to my account by noon.

SCB is the best with wires (and exchange rates) I think. Incoming never takes more than 24 hours for me. (Just transfer mid-week)

  2. Good luck finding a 'good hotel' experience in Chiang Mai.

Try the Tamarind Village. Good location and value. Mosquitos may be bothersome, but the hotel is excellent. See http://www.tamarindvillage.com/

for a good price, refer to http://asiarooms.com/thailand/chiang_mai/t...nd_village.html

(#2 has a pretty good breakfast, but the rooms are a joke)

A lot of people also like BP Chiangmai City Hotel. However, the location is not the best (it's a little far from things, if you like to walk)

  3. I've been to 4 banks in the past 2 weeks to open an account. I have only a 30 day tourist stamp.

    2 SCB locations said no.

1 SCB branch said yes. (This branch initially asked for a work permit but I said I don't work in Thailand. He gave me the application anyway.)

    1 Krungsri branch said yes.

Just continue to try. Each branch acts independently.

Be sure to say that you want to open a SAVINGS account. (For some reason, most of them seem to assume you want to open a checking account)

It may also help to tell them your money comes from overseas.

  4. Another option is to use JungleDisk, which will store your files onto Amazons S3 servers.

Install the program onto all 3 computers.

Then, you will be able to move files back and forth between them as easily as you would another drive (as the "jungle drive" becomes a network location on your machine)

  5. People in all cities can be rude etc, You go to london and people slam doors, go to sydney you will see elderly not getting a seat, go to paris you see someone getting in the bus before the others get off.

You all seem to think thw whole world have courtesy but bangkok doesnt.

There is people with courtesy there, I think most of you just like to remember when a Thai did something wrong and complain about it.

If this were a forum on Paris or Sydney, I'm sure we'd offer our opinion on either city.

As this is a forum about Bangkok and topic about courtesy therein, I think it's fit to offer opinions and commentary on it.

Yes, of course there are "people with courtesy" in Bangkok. No one is saying there aren't.

I go out amidst the same city every day. And every day I go out with intention: to extend kindness. Upon my return I can usually recount numerous occasions of polite gestures I saw extend by others to others.

Most of us, including myself, seem to have that in mind. I "extend courtesy" where it is appropriate, every day, to be sure.

However, when it is obvious to me that the other person does not care for courtesy, I do not extend it. That would be socially inefficient.

Many of my friends, here and abroad, compliment me on being a gentleman. However, they also know I don't put up with BS and am *not* a gentleman to everyone. Unlike some others, I don't do as Jesus would do. I do what I believe is appropriate for the situation.

  6. Yes, looks nice this cards really, but has to do with metallic colors also IMO (i.e. gold and Platinum).

BTW I've had a PowerBook from Apple (G4) "Platinum" edition lightweight. My experience was, can only break and oxidate - the very thought from breaking the business cards in the wallets... Apple stopped after to produce it.

You're right.. I can probably get "the look" without using the actual metal.

If it looks and feels like a precious metal and has my name on it, it may be just as effective as one that *is* precious metal.

I'll find out how strong the brushed steel one is when I order it. Or maybe they can send me a sample :o

  7. Well good she found you, it could have been worse is your arguement?

What is really too bad is that she does not come from a background were she could get the opportunities to go to university and have basic financial stabilty with out the need to find 20 year older man.

If she did then she could enjoy a partner who is young and not one who is she "doesn't find... physically very attractive"

Since you love her you must wish she had this chance right?

If a Thai woman wants to be with an older man, a local or foreigner, so be it.

It may be better for that woman to seek out someone with a good heart and one who treats her with respect rather than a focusing on her partner being young and physically very attractive, as was suggested and implied.

Women generally mature faster and live longer than men. If the age difference is 5 years or 20+, whose business is it?

  8. Platinum and gold?

Sorry, I'm not an expert of precious metal. But I'm very interesting what material you want.

I can't make a picture of this business cards. With PVC yes, I can, but then it looks like a member card or something like that or an other plastic card.

There's a place in the US that can do brass, steel, or copper (metalcards.com - but they don't do color). The brushed steel from another firm looks nice. So, just imagine this in gold.

I think I'm going to order 100 from each of the above (plus the shop at MBK) and see which one works for me. And then I'll ask the Sultan of Brunei where he gets his namecards done.

  9. Fixed interest is a safe investment for retired people.

One never knows which way other investments will go.

And if you have enough money, you already know where the safe investments are that will give you 15% + per year

These two statements contradict each other..

Most people are not aware that these investments exist (because they are not financially qualified), and thus would not be included in my "other investments" statement.

But if you happen to have enough money...

  10. Thanks for the link! I'll see if they can do metal.

you need a proper printing house that makes plates, and work with proper artwork.. rather than digital print..

you can select substrate, or collect a substrate yourself and show it to the printer.. ask them to match.. should not be that difficult but MBK won't help I think.

Plates should be easy enough. I guess the process with be more 'hands on' for me if I want them done here.

can you give me one when youve got them done?

id like to keep it for a rinay day!

on a serious note, did you get anywhere with this yet? id be interested to see the final product. justifying 400thb on a business card takes some doing. i would be very interested to know your line of business.

    good luck in your hunt.

    regards

Sure thing! (I've seen these before and it's really stunning. Too bad I didn't think to get the company's info, in the US.)

It's just an advertising expense. My dad uses bright orange adhesive business cards. He says they work great when he sticks them on client's equipment for repair. Crayon-colored stickers won't work for me, so I want to do something even more crazy.

I'm in .. um... the 'family business'.

  11. My bank, SCB, lets me wire transfer money out of Thailand if it's under USD $20,000 without a problem.

However, to transfer over that they want me to go to my branch in Chiang Mai (where I have the account) and get a Foreign Currency Certificate (what they called a credit reference). This is too inconvenient for me right now.

Does anyone have experience with transferring money (sourced outside Thailand) without this certificate? Can I just go multiple times to different branches say, spread out over a few weeks, in order to transfer over that maximum?

  12. Project that attitude long enough and we'll be living in an 'every man for himself' jungle. :o

Teh.. we almost are! It's called "Bangkok".

Are you suggesting that the very many people here who do not display courtesy-as-we-know-it have clouds over their heads? I don't think so. It's called adapting to your environment.

  13. I am looking for a place in Bangkok (if any) that does "premium" business cards. (Every topic I searched for seemed to have recommendations more based on price.)

My first choice is to have a few hundred cards plated in gold or platinum. (No, I'm not crazy. I've seen this before but don't know who does them - I know they're not cheap; I think about 400 baht+ per card. Contacts will either display my card prominently or melt it down if they get strapped for cash!)

My second choice is to have my cards (for which I have the design already) printed on top-quality stock with top-quality printing equipment.

I've been to several places in MBK for the latter, and did not see any with good quality samples. There was one on the 3rd floor that looked ok (called Instant Print) but I am hoping I will be able to find much better.

    Anyone have a recommendation?

  14. How many retirees live off fixed interest?

I hope they also have some growth investments for the longer term.

Fixed interest is a safe investment for retired people.

One never knows which way other investments will go.

I'll take a steady 5% a year over "somewhere between" -60% and +60% yearly growth.

And if you have enough money, you already know where the safe investments are that will give you 15% + per year

  15. 5555 this is funny.

new yorkers are some of the rudest people ever. the only friendly ones are those who get a big tip from me. more money, more arse kissing.

    Hardly.

I've never spent time in a big city that has people that are more polite.

btw, there is a difference between "courtesy" and "politeness".

Sure.. Thai people are generally polite. Are they generally courteous? I don't think so.
