  1. I've picked up nice stuff, second i think, for very good prices at the Bo Sang Umbrella Festival.

Junglechef is absolutely correct. There is a ceramic factory at the corner of Sankapang Road and the stop light going into Bo Sang that has a once a year sale that coincides with the Umbrella Festival. I think the name of the factory is Prichemparas (spelling). Their sale is for 5 days, and different stuff comes outiside in their parking area every day. Many wholesales and retailers come the first day or two of the event to stock up on plates, vases, cups, sculptures, to resell. There are many over-produced items, and seconds which are designs of many international chain stores of 70 to 80 per cent off their normal prices.

Their sale is normally mid-January. Earlier this year, we didn't find anything that we wanted, but the prior two years we found some great buys.

  2. The best duck place that i have been to is opposite the CMU main front gate there is a big food market starts from 5pm everyday, you go into the market go past success Italian go past the 2 steak places and it's the last one on the right has so many people there everyday .

The skin is crispy and you can get duck peak if you want it wink.gif

You are making me hungry. Is that pretty close to the old Mi Casa restaurant? If I remember correctly there is no where to park around there, right?

  3. I went there on the opening night but got there too early I guess. Seems like they have to wait until the Lanna dance/music show at Kalare is over before they can play music at Boy's. They were tuning up earlier on and it was really distracting the performers in the show. I guess it was about 21:30 and there still was no one at Boy's place yet. I'll go again another night but later next time.

Thanks. I'll keep my eyes peeled for feedback.

  4. We heard of a place with good roast duck not far from Mccormick Hospital on Kaeo Nawarat (head towards the river from Mccormick). It had been in business for several years. We ate there only once because we are hardly ever in that area, but it was very good duck. However, I don't remember the skin being crispy. We only ordered a duck rice place and the price was right.

Does anyone know the name of this place and is it still there (for the op)?

  5. Last year, we saw Chai at Boy Blues Bar quite a few times. You can probably ask there. They are all normally very helpful.

For those of you who went to the opening, how was it?

  6. We like Chiang Mai. If you have time, you can also go to Pai and Mae Hong Son or head up to the Burma border.

If you are thinking about going to Laos, you can go to Nong Khai and get to Vientiane via the bridge. It's been a long time since we've been there, but we also enjoyed Luang Prabang.

If you are thinking about going to Cambodia, go to Siem Reap to see Angkor Wat.

    Anyway, hope this helps you.

I forgot to say that "Loy Kratong" festival is a nice time of year to visit Chiang Mai. I think it is on the 10th of November, but the celebration starts several days before that.

  7. Is it worthwhile to get multiple stop tickets? You really need to research this. I usually use matrix to figure out what days to fly-looking for the cheaper days - by clicking the calendar of low fares. However, you must be flying business class BKK-FRA (81000 TB) to Frankfurt. Some days show lower Business Class fares than that on Gulf Air and Kuwait Airlines, but then you need to go on the airlines web site to see if you really could get that price.

To Mexico, I think I would fly United because I am a Star Alliance member. However, I haven't been to Mexico in a long, long time.

Oh, I might also check to see what offers are available for North America passes/coupons.

  9. Hi,

Could you tell me which shop this is in on ga suan gel 3rd floor or which side it is on that floor? I want to take piano lessons also... thanks

There is a music school behind Central/Kad Suan Goaw named Sanita or something like that. Lots of kids learn piano there. Cost is about 330 baht per hour I think and they sell lessons four at a time.

I wouldn't suggest group lessons. It's might be a bit hard for her to learn that way at first.

PM me if you need more info. I have their phone number around here somewhere, or I could find out the name of the soi.

From kad suan kaew Bangkok Bank entrance, take the escalator up to floor 3. It is on the same side as Central Department store. I think the name of the shop is called Amadeus Music. It has a glass windows and doors and pianos are on display. Go towards the back to the desk to talk to staff.

  10. I don't ever remember having lettuce in a burrito in the San Francisco Bay Area - usually choice of meat, rice, beans and a salsa and a super would additionally have avocado and sour cream. I remember getting a little cabbage salad on the side though.

We went to Miguel's on Nim once and said we would never go back. It sounds like the other Miguel's are much better than that one.

Salsa Kitchen, I normally like, but found there can be quality inconsistency and it is difficult to get anything with much heat in it so we finally gave up on trying to get spicy food. It is normally pretty good.

It sounds like I'll need to try El Diablo sometime.

  11. There is a place near Grace Dental on Soi 11 Nimmanhemin that has great gai yang (grilled chicken). Head away from Nimmanhemin on Soi 11, you will pass Grace Dental on your left then there will be a place with a lot of smoke from the bbq charcoal. (Note: It is closer to Sirimunkalajarn Road). It is kind of a big place and many people eat there. We usually take it to go - one grilled chicken, one order of som tam and 2 orders of sticky rice. It's a great meal! I think they are closed on Mondays.

Thank you. So, is it in Soi 11 or where ? What's their business time ?

Yes, it is on Soi 11 very close to Grace Dental. I'm not sure of their business hours. We have been there lunchtime to very late afternoon.

  12. Regarding Guitarman, is it opened? The last thing posted on their website is Sep27 and it says it is officially for sale as of that date.

Went again to Boy Blues Bar.. Boy had to run an errand, but Chai was playing and a guest person. It was great.

  13. Siwalee land and houses (canal road) - We rented for a couple of winters. We like the moo baan though the street that we were on was quite narrow. Our landlord got us TOT DSL and I don't remember having any problems with it. I think we paid 20,000 baht a month for a small 3 bedroom, but like I said it was for a short time so we were probably charged more money. We did not really look into the facilities at the moo baan, but I'm pretty sure there is a pool. The kitchen was indoors and had a four burner gas cooktop.

We also rented at Baan Nai Faan 3 for a couple of years in 2003 and during the winter a few years ago. The house that we rented for the winter had a great garden. These houses were much too big for us. I think 5 bedrooms in one and 3 bedrooms in the other. These had maids rooms. One had a remote control gate like a garage door opener. These were 40,000 baht a month. It can get kind of noisy at night sometimes. There is a pool and a small fitness room. One house had a dryer, 4 burner gas cooktop and oven with rotisserie. The other house had a 4 burner gas cooktop. Kitchen was indoors, but one neighbor had an outdoor cooking area. In the moo baan there is a restaurant (which used to be good, we weren't so crazy about it last time we were there) and a upscale spa.

We like Sivalee Land and Houses and Baan Nai Faan 3 because they are not far from the Miahia market (really good sausage on the bbq at the right and more). We are living in town this winter and still travel to that market every so often. They are not far from Lotus, Big C, Homepro. And now, there is a Carrefour and Makro on that side of town.

We looked at Home In Park at one time and thought it was kind of far from the market that we liked.

    Hope this helps.

  15. If she likes desserts, go to "W by Wanlamun". I assume you can take it to go, but if you want to eat there, they serve a variety of dishes. We thought the Thai food was pretty good and nicely presented. You can eat indoors or outdoors. We originally went there on Ulysses G recommendation on a post last year.

  16. Yes, thank you Thaivisa, Olde Bell, Sausage King and Nana Foods. It was a very nice party. We were there early from 7 to 8:30 or 9pm. We tried to see if anyone was there who went to a 2003 thaivisa party (last thaivisa party we went to) and we didn't see anyone! It was nice meeting some new people. Thanks again.

  17. Boys Blue Bar opened a little over a month ago. We've been there a couple of times and enjoyed it. I just happened to do a google search looking for Boy and found this link Info on Boy Blues Bar.

We also go to Brasserie Pub & Restaurant to see Took and his band. Unfortunately, he plays late (midnight) usually. He's terrific on the guitar if you have not seen him. It's by the river, North of Good View Restaurant. Here's a link with a map Map to see Took..

  18. Thai Cookery School offers Master Classes. We took one quite a few years ago and it was just us (2 people). The regular courses they offer usually has a lot of people, but a few friends have taken them and they are hands on (you prep the food).

The one we used to go to closed down...
