  1. There are many articles about AIDS in Thailand with Phayao and women from Dok kham tai about the 90's and was the epicenter of where women came from. Yes, they went to bars in different places to support their family. In Dok kham Tai, My best friend (Thai) who was my next door neighbor and worked for the governmant, came down with AIDS in 1999 and died a few years later. My wife's 2 high school friends (old then in 2001) their daughters came back from Japan and while made a lot of money, they died within 2 years. Phayao /Dok kham tai area is noted for fair skinned and beautiful girls whose parents were very poor in the 90's and worked whatever before AIDS was well known. My original post was based that this area still being noted as an AIDS area which I also find it hard to believe. My wife's nieces are nurses at Phayao hospital and a school teacher and have said no way that article could be true now.

  2. Saw in the Thai news today that Phayao is either number 1 or 2 in the country for AIDS. There was an article a long time ago about AIDS in Thailand and epicicenter in Thailand was in Phayao province. After all these years, Phayao still leading the country for AIDS? Does not make sense.

  3. PP - I believe we saw that Japanese place when we took the car to the carwash the other day. You are talking about the one behind, and sort of to the left, of the 'PT' garage; right (at the end of the road that the hospital and post office are on)? Looks like I'll have to give it a try this weekend.... And yes, do they serve sushi/sashimi as well?

Gino - The pizza place has plenty of Thai customers (otherwise they'd have shut already). We've been there 3 times now and there is always at least 3 or 4 tables of Thais and I've only ever been on Tuesdays, so I would imagine Friday and Saturday are even busier - if they opened later than 4pm, it might be busier still! You have to remember that there aren't that many 'farangs' in Phayao (yet), but I can assure you most of our Thai friends are always looking for something different to eat....

Good luck if you do decide to open a restaurant here. It would need to be something that keeps the Thai population of Phayao interested 'long-term' - I get the feeling the that most places are rammed to begin with, then the 'fad' gets a bit boring and the Thais all move on to somewhere else/new. I'm no restaurateur, and it would take a lottery win for me to want to open a restaurant in Thailand, but Phayao doesn't have any decent 'western' food joints really - apart from the pizza place and KFC... whistling.gif

Thanks, my wife's cousin did own his own restaurant down south somewhere but went belly-up and I would have to rely on him for the logistics setting it up. Maybe a small place 1st and just see what happens. Glad the pizza place so far has been successful. Gives me hope that I can also start a good western/European eatery.

  4. I would be interested in knowing if the pizza place has many Thai customers. The Japanese place sure sounds like a place I will hit next year. My wife's cousin who is Thai works in Sweden about 8 months of the year wants us together to open a restaurant in Phayao and he is the lead chief of a very good restaurant in Sweden. He would quit that job should we go into business together in Phayao. I guess my question is, is there a clientele in Phayao other than for Thai food? Swedish, Italian, Japanese, American, etc. Never been in the restaurant business before, cousin has, so I am kinda dubious. Peace.

  5. Dok kham tai is a small kinda poor farm town where my wife and family grew up and living. Lots of good memories when I visited there when we had the old Thai style home on stilts. Now a mixture of both the old and new now. I guess in about 1993 or so, we went to visit like every year for Christmas time. No one around us celebrated Christmas, I had not since I was a kid, and my wife surprised me on Christmas eve, we were going to have a Christmas party the next night. The next day, somewhere, family got a small Christmas tree and decorated it and the local women came to the house early to start preparing food (you name it, we had it). Also did not know all the local young kids were to come and I was to give out wrapped gifts to them (no clue what was bought or how much). But to see those older family friends chowing down on food, drinking whiskey, beer, etc, and then me giving this gifts to kids whose parents were invited, made me feel so happy and would never forget their excitement, laughing, happiness. I still have the video of that night. After that year, we go visit in February every year because of my work schedule but when we move there next year, Christmas for the young kids will be celebrated every year at my house just for the joy of seeing the happiness of these young kids eating a great dinner and getting gifts.

  7. Well, took about 10 days but those 3 seem to be much better. However, yesterday wife's brother's grandson was hit hard with it and now in Phayao hospital. Sure glad we are not visiting the family at this time.

  8. I thought about this for a while, tried to work out how to do a WiFi connection.

It's on the back burner at the moment but I've been thinking about buying a NoteBook after seeing how cheap they are at the new Central Plaza.

Then just plug it into the TV when it's not being used else where...

Seems to be a lot of options for wireless.

  9. I caught dengue about 6 weeks ago now, still recovering, i woke up in the night freezing cold no matter how many blankets i put on the bed i was stilll freezing, then it changed to feeling over hot, i was shaking and feeling very weak, my body was sore to touch, breathing was difficult and my head felt like it was being pounded with a sledge hammer from the inside, after going to the local hospital and having x-rays of my chest they said it was dengue but there was no medication you just gotta let it peter out itself, they said it could last up to 6 months, i'm feeeling better but not a 100%, sometimes i feel very light headed and go dizzy and have no balance.

i tried a beer or 2 a couple of weeks ago but threw it up so if you ever catch this stay of the alcohol eat a little but often and take in plenty of fluids other than alcohol, i'm hoping i'm over the worst but they say it can always come back, God i hope not, i wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy, good luck chok dee :jap: .

Wow, I did not know it was that bad reading it online. Nasty stuff. We have a stream along our road that the Phayao Lake flows into and I am sure they spray because they kinda made a park there, vendors selling food/clothes and a floating dock which they have entertainment on. I read it is contagious.

Good luck and I hope you feel 100% well again soon.

  10. Oh, ok.... sorry about that, thought you were back at Phayao. ;)

No luck with the site, got:

We're sorry, this content is not available for your region.

    Will look again tonight.

Figures, Hundreds of movies. Better than Netflix because free.

  11. The OP has a valid question -- one that can probably be answered on the Tricare website or with a phone call either to Tricare or a local VFW expert.

A frriend of ours was hospitalized here in CM at a hospital that is well-respected, but didn't "accept" Tricare. He had to pay up-front and seek re-imbursement later. He eventually got his re-imbursement, but he had some real anguish while in the ICU and the hospital was holding his passport until he came up with 70,000 baht. He had the funds, but they were in the U.S. and he couldn't make the transfer from the ICU!

The VFW helped him out, although he wasn't a member (at the time). They're definitely a good organization to join if you have the benefits of Tricare.

Sigh -- it would be so nice if all American citizens had something similar to Tricare.

What is a bummer is we will both be paying for Medicare, Medicade and can not be used there and while my Tricare pays everything here in the US, everything is paid out of pocket in Thailand and hope to get reimbursed later.

Ha, Obama Care will "take care of everyone".

  12. I'm almost certain you can go to any hospital in CM and get reimbursed by Tri-care. As long as you have all the paperwork/receipts in English. You can call the JUSMAG-Thai representative in Bangkok if you want to get clarification of what I said. Call 022871036 and you can talk to either Nurse Tida or Nurse Pranee, they are the only ones that work there, so one of them should answer the phone. I've sub mitted claims from both Ram and Sripat, and my neighbor submitted claims from McCormick, all were approved. I also go the MT Lab for all my lab work and they were all approved too.

I don't think you/ll have anyproblem getting reimbursed from useing any hospital in CM. You know you have to submit claims using DD Form 2642???

Thanks, wife has been on Remicade for about 10 years and when we move to Phayao next year, trying to get my "ducks lined up" 1st. I emailed McCormick doctor there for that treatment and was told they did not do those injections or that medicine. Ram l does but almost impossible to see the specialist as my wife gets the drug every 8 weeks. I got a lead from the Chiangrai board at the Suan Dok Hospital which I believe is the 3rd hospital approved. I wrote to the specialist and asked about Tricare and did he do the injection and still waiting for answer. Both my wife and I will be on Tricare for life and was told by the 2 nurses there in Bangkok that everything will be out of pocket 1st and then apply for any money back. Thing is it is about $8000 every 8 weeks which means my saving could go fast if not reimbursed quickly.

Good idea about contacting the VFW about a lot of my concerns. Peace.

  13. Sorry to hear about your wife. As for searching on google, what i came across are these informations, hoping they can help you out.

In this link you have 3 specialist on Rheumatologists in CM. All 3 of them working at Suan Dok except the one in middle also works at CM Ram hospital.

You can try to mail them.

Thank you so much. We also went to the university hospital and never got to see anyone and the email contacts are just what I need. Much appreciated.

  14. Hi there, I was having Infliximab (Remicade) infusions every 8 weeks in the UK. It was not an option for me to live in Chiang Rai and have to travel back to the UK every 8 weeks.

I had already made enquiries at Suan Dok Hospital in Chiang Mai and the Doctor explained that although any drug could be ordered, they did not have any specialized staff to administer the infusions. I discussed this with my consultant in the UK and he suggested that I change medication to self- administered injections of Humira. It comes in either a pen type syringe (very much like Diabetic Pens), or a pre-filled normal syringe, It is administered every two weeks and it has to be kept refrigerated. That is what I am currently having and it may well be worth your while looking into this solution.

The main differences between the two products are: Infliximab (Remicade) is developed using mouse proteins and Humira is developed from human proteins.

I hope you find this information useful.

    Good Luck

    ImageDude

Thank you so much for the feedback. She has been on it for about 10 years now and I have talked yo her doctor, which I will again soon, about alternatives. There is a 3rd one he uses also. I guess you get your Humira there? How much does it cost? My wife and I hate needles but we have good friends at Phayao hospital and perhaps they could get a supply and give the shots. Worth the try. Last Feburary we went to Ram l in Chiangmai, did not get to see the specialist but some nurse said they did the injections. Because of my military insurance, we are authorized to go to approved hospitals, only 3 in Chiangmai to get back my prepaid bills.

Sorry to hear you also have had problems with arthritis. Nasty stuff.

  15. Hi!

Sorry it took so long, but the doctor was at work on hes private clinic,so I had to go there.

He told me,that we dont have that kind of doctors in Chiang Rai-you have to go to Chiang Mai-and there is a proffessor by the name:

DR:Worrawit.Sripat.-so thats the man you have to call or go to.

Thanks, kinda figured that but worth the try asking. Any idea where he works? Google search does not show anything on him.

  16. A quick Google reveals that the drug is administered by intravenous infusion, rather than orally or injection.

There would have to be somewhere in Phayao where you can get that done so how difficult would it be to get... say a year's supply in and keep it at home?

Not sure what it's shelf life is.

It is also expensive stuff. Her every 8 week treatment runs about $8000, including blood work, and my insurance pays it all. In Thailand, I would have to pay for it upfront and hopefully get some or all of it back by filing a claim after.

  17. Hi!

It is early morning now,but later when people get up, I will ask my the couple next door,as they are both doctors here in Chiang Rai,and maby the know.

I will let you know as soon as I know enything.

Thank you, sir. Driving to Chiangrai will be so much easier than Chiangmai, especially during the raining season if my wife can get her 8 week treatment of Remicade. Without it, she would become crippled within 1 year. Ram 1 in Chiangrmai does it for the injection but a pain in the butt to schedule/drive there. Appreciate your help.
