Not hard to do. Embassies do not care about a person being on an overstay. It is not their responsibility to check for it when accepting an application for one.

How would a person leave the country without a valid passport if they refused to issue one?

You were posting when I was typing.

I know you are experienced in all things visa related UJ, but perhaps we can hear from a member who has actually received a new passport from their Embassy or Consulate, whilst on an overstay, and I mean, a serious overstay, not just a few days.

As I said in a later post, of course an Embassy would issue an emergency passport, but I would suggest that is only with documents from Immigration official because the person is in detention.

The OP could do like JT suggested and present to his Embassy claiming a lost / stolen passport, but doesn't that require a police report? Wouldn't the police verify identity with immigration?

Maybe.  But does your embassy care if you are on overstay regarding issuing a new passport?  Honest question - I don't know - but guessing it's not their problem.

The worse-case is if he "lost" a passport, and does not have a police-report for this.  That could prevent departure.

If he shows up with an old/expired passport with his entry-stamp shown, or police-report for his old/lost passport, plus a current passport or ETD allowing onward-travel, he should be fine.

If flying direct to Belgium, I think he could even travel there on his old/expired passport (your own country cannot deny you).

Surely, Embassies can not be complicate in a crime. (overstaying)  Would they really issue a new passport for someone on such a long overstay?  I seriously doubt they would.

In relation to flying direct to Belgium, it's my understanding NO airline is obligated to accept a passenger without a valid passport.  They simply will not let you board, and it's understandable, as it's not their problem.

If the OP is not trolling, I can only assume he has an expired passport, so must be detained for the purpose of arranging an emergency passport and paying his overstay fine.

He could have applied for a new passport or gotten an emergency travel-doc.  If the latter, he might only be able to go to Belgium - policy differs by country on ETDs.  Hopefully he got a new full-passport, and so his options are less limited.

I accept what you say, but if we do the math, and "assume" a little, let's say the OP entered Thailand 16 years ago with a new passport, which is best case scenario.  This passport expired 6 years ago.

How did he get a new passport, 6 years ago, with a 10 year overstay?

If he has a passport he can use, then he can't be a 16 year overstay.

I'm a visa runner, and have never overstayed, and never will, thus, I am not up to date on the overstay legalities, but something doesn't sound right.

I'm starting to sense a troll.

You can get a "Visa on Arrival" but it can take you a long time waiting for it. And I believe it costs a few dollars more.  Other problem is the Airline you use may not allow you to board without it.  Plan on taking a trip to Bangkok. Go in the morning 9AM submit documents with passport (they give you receipt) and pick it up in the afternoon (2PM) then fly out that night.  Just an idea.

"but it can take you a long time waiting for it." - yes, it can take a while.  Sometimes an hour.  However, still a lot quicker than getting a taxi / bus from the airport to the Embassy, and then waiting in the Embassy to be served, then waiting until that afternoon to pick up your passport, then waiting at the Embassy to pick it up, then getting a taxi / bus back to the airport.

You can compare prices.  Here's one of the bigger online agency from Google.  You will see 1 month and 3 month visas on arrival are available, with a single or multi-entry option.

    https://www.myvietnamvisa.com/

If you add on your taxi / bus costs to the Embassy price, arranging visa on arrival will probably end up a little cheaper.

"Other problem is the Airline you use may not allow you to board without it." - the online agent will email you a "letter of invitation" or it's called words to that effect, stating you have arranged to pick up your visa when you land at the airport.  Print out this letter and produce it with you passport and air ticket at the airport - you will be allowed to board the flight.  YOU MUST PRODUCE THIS LETTER AT CHECK-IN.

Don't forget to have some US Dollars for the "stamping fee" at immigration, and you can save some time by filling out the visa application form and attaching a passport photo before you leave.  (the form says 2 photos but they usually hand one back)  Exchange some baht for US Dollars at the airport in Bangkok.

If you are flying into Swampy from Phuket, but don't want to go over to Don Muang, check out Vietjet.  They are a Vietnamese budget airline and they fly out of Swampy. If you are flying into Don Muang from Phuket, check out Air Asia and Nok Air.

I am also on Phuket, and have done several visa runs to Vietnam using this method, and still continue to do so.  This information is current.

  5. Sorry to hear about this inconvenience, OC.

I'm not sure why this has been moved to the Visa Forum when it only appears to be happening on Phuket.

Anyway, I would suggest you tell your wife to go to the other Immigration Office on Phuket and try there, or, maybe she can go again in a day or so, and hopefully get a different Immigration Officer that simply accepts the paperwork.

The more I read about the never ending paperwork required and various inconsistencies here, the more I am glad to be residing here on tourist visas.

In the past, "visa running" was considered a real pain, but as they make things harder and harder for long term expats here, tourist visas and visa runs are looking more and more easier and reliable, although I accept it would not be easier for those with a disability.

  6. They will have to employ more staff at the Thai Embassies in Vietnam, as it will be added to the list of countries for "easy" visa runs by thousands of visa running foreigners living in Thailand.

This should also reduce the queues at other meighbouring country embassies.

The increased tourism from Thai visa runners alone will be worth it, not to mention the many tourists this move will steal off Thailand for their 2 week holiday.

  7. There's another one off Ao Nang Beach, Krabi just waiting to happen - the Ao Nang Princess 5 that sank a few weeks ago after a fire. It's laden with fuel oil. Not a whiff in the media but once the tank leaks?

Wait for it to happen and then appoint a committee to conduct an enquiry!

"Wait for it to happen and then appoint a committee to conduct an enquiry!" - and then issue a press release stating the black liquid is "rotting leaves." biggrin.png

  8. Lifeguards on the beaches year round with modern equipment? Nah, don't need them.

Public toilets every 500 metres on the beaches, the islands most famous attractions? Nah, don't need em.

Dustbins at all public beaches and parks? Nah, don't need those, that's what the ground is for.

Movie museum? What took so long!

With black money drying up from beach chairs and bars etc - they need to come up with the money from elsewhere.

  9. This insurance issue seems a long way off the topic at hand.

Why is it a long way off the topic?

The financial position of the next of kin could well be riding on the official cause of death report by the Thai police. There may be a lot at stake, which is possibly why the family have involved the FBI agent.

stevenl says life insurance covers suicide, some policies do, many don't. One of my policies does not.

All these suspicious deaths in Thailand written off by Thai police as suicides, because they are too lazy to ivestigate, could very well see the next of kin miss out on a life insurance payout, having a negative effect on their financial future.

If he jumped, it's suicide. His life insurance may, or may not payout, depending on the suicide clause of his policy, if he had one.

If he fell, there maybe legal action taken against the insurance company of the dive boat.

If he was thrown overboard, life insurance pays out.

  10. Which one appears more likely, and worthy of further enquiries????

Ummm...............that he got blind drunk and fell overboard.

So, authorities should disregard the domestic he had with his wife, and him being "escorted" from his room by two men, never to be seen again?

That is why they interviewed them all.

Interviewing potential witnesses is not a thorough investigation.

  11. " all these deaths recorded as "suicide" by Thai Police equals no life insurance for the next of kin,"

Not true. In most insurance policies there will be a clause stating that death by suicide will invalidate the policy for a limited period of time, after that there will be normal insurance pay out.

Some policies have a 2 year waiting period and will pay out for suicide, but most policies have a 13 month exclusion on suicide from the date that cover commences, is reinstated or increased. As most policies have an annual "renewal" (reinstatement) - they never get to 13 months, so in affect, don't cover suicide. A nice legal loop hole for the insurance companies.

No, not true, there is in hardly any insurance policy an annual renewal that invalidates the policy in case of suicide.

    That is simply not true.

Most life insurance policies post the insured an annual renewal letter - "reinstatement."

A lot of these policies increase the premium because the insured is now one year older - "increased."

"commences, reinstatment or increased" - the 13 months starts again.

  13. They will be forever searching for answers as he will never be found.

It's sad but they need to accept the fact he is gone and at no fault of the Phuket authorities. Don't know what they think the FBI can do about it. Arrest the Phuket Authorities for not keeping their promise to search for a month?

"Don't know what they think the FBI can do about it." - the FBI will be able to look into his financial transactions, the backgrounds of other passengers, his phone records, medical history, recent travel habits, access his digital life etc etc.

There may be nothing of any use in this information, or it may raise suspicion and lead to a motive for an individual.

How can the FBI get thai phone records and financial transactions? What does that have to do with a guy falling off a boat?

Oh I got it, a negative conspiracy theory is brewing once again. Do tell.

"How can the FBI get thai phone records and financial transactions?" - please show me where I stated "Thai phone records and financial transactions????"

The guy worked in Kuwait, probably for an American contractor, who most likely paid his salary in USD, into an American bank account.

"What does that have to do with a guy falling off a boat?" - how do you know he fell overboard? Oh, I got it, a simple death by misadventure, or suicide theory - case closed - back to collecting tea money.

As mentioned in previous thread, all these deaths recorded as "suicide" by Thai Police equals no life insurance for the next of kin, not to mention justice not being served.

He either fell overboard, jumped overboard, or was thrown overboard.

He was an experienced diver - fell overboard is a little unlikely.

A member has attested to his character, posting he would never commit suicide, so jumping overboard appears unlikely.

He had an "altercation" with his wife and was "escorted" from his room by two men and never seen again.

Which one appears more likely, and worthy of further enquiries????

  16. BUPA Blue Cross. Policy in English. Local office past the Phuket City Hotel (old bus station).

For sure not the cheapest health insurance. I've never had a health issue so I can't comment, but wife has had a couple of health issues and BUPA paid the bills direct, once at International, and once at Phuket BKK. So far. no complaints, other than the premium price.

Does BUPA Blue Cross cover you in Thailand, and if you visit you home county, or a neighbouring country, you need travel insurance, or does it cover you world wide?

  17. Maybe give the Museum a call. They might sell it as a souvenir.

Have you tried serching the torrent sites with the movie's name, in Thai? (Maha'Lai Muan Rae) I don't know if it's possible, but maybe you can serch the torrent sites with the Thai language as well.

I notice there are a few You Tube clips from the movie, maybe you could make contact with the person who posted the clip.

Maybe try a few copy DVD shops and tell them what you want. They may have it stored on a hard drive and burn you a copy.

Maybe put an ad on some of the classified websites for foreigners in the wanted section.

Just a few ideas for you to consider.
