  1. It seems that the best way to buy an mp3 player these days is to buy a phone. I bought a cheap IQ mobile (490 Baht) plus less than 200 Baht for a 2 GB memory card. It is an excellent but basic mp3 player.

A cheap smart phone would probably give you an mp3 player with more options (play lists, shuffle etc.) and the option of loading several good books onto the phone if you are into reading.

Before I bought a smart phone I said I don't need a smart phone to access the internet because I use my computer. How wrong I was! If you have WiFi in your home you can use the phone as a radio. I use TuneIn to listen to Australian radio all the time.

  2. When his excellency does eventually take power, he will move the airport to San Patong; He has already built the new access road and owns the land on which the airport is to be built, so it is said. So then us Hangdongians can sleep in peace. . . . . .. . . . . perhaps 10 years away? I'll be old and deaf by then, so no matter either way!

My Thai neighbour is a government official in Mae Wang District. I asked him about the new highway extension of Canal Road to the south. He said it was not for an airport in San Patong District. He said that if a new airport is built it would be in San Khampang District,

If this were to happen I think Hangdonians would have a lot more aircraft noise than now as aircraft heading North would fly over Hang Dong.

  4. We live mid way between airport and Hang Dong, don't have any noise problems, aside from the odd chopper or military jet over-flying our village.

    Maybe I'm DEAF!

Aircraft flying due south from the airport miss Hang Dong by at least 3 km. Scheduled flights seem to fly somewhat East of due South so there are no aircraft noise problems in Hang Dong or a few km north of Hang Dong.

  5. Thank you for all the replies. I found what I was looking for in Icon Plaza about 50 meters from the Amorn "Electronics" shop. As you go into Icon Plaza there are two sets of stair cases, one on the right and one on the left. If you take the left set there is a shop on the 2nd floor at the top of the stairs that sells basic electronics stuff.

  6. I need a fairly standard power jack to connect to the back of my Creative Labs speaker. I went to Amorn Hang Dong to buy one but they didn't have one. No problem, I was sure the main Amorn Store at Computer Plaza would have one as I bought one there before.

To my surprise the main Amorn Electronics store seems to have morphed into a general store with practically no small electronics parts.

Where do you buy electronics parts in Chiang Mai?

Note in the photo below that I am not looking for a power supply. I am only looking for the jack that is circled in red. Of course it has to be the right size but it is a standard electronics part.

  7. Might want to look for a ricer as that''s what it's called in the culinary world

With all due respect to the chef, I believe this one is called a Food Mill. A 'ricer' is usually smaller, perhaps 3-4 inches across. A Food Mill, as 'I' know it, looks quite similar but is about 7-8 inches in diameter, two quart in capacity. On the other hand, a food mill will 'rice' a LOT of potatoes at one time, just as a ricer will mill down things like tomatoes for a sauce. (Especially cherry tomatoes. tongue.png ) Who said size doesn't matter?

Just to make it clear, a ricer isn't just a smaller version of a food mill. It's completely different in appearance and quite different in operation . Just google images of a ricer and food mill. What this person is looking for is definitely a food mill. I believe I saw at least one European brand for sale at Central Festivals central dept. store. But it wasn't cheap - maybe 2000 baht.

When I started this thread I didn't know what a ricer was and I had certain;y never heard of a Mouli Legume. From Google it appears that a food mill and a Mouli Legume are the same thing but a ricer is different.

I am looking for a food mill (Mouli Legume), mainly to process tomatoes which I hope will be coming from my garden in 3 months time! I am germinating the seeds from fresh tomatoes now.

Thank you for the responses so far. Yok is the obvious first place to look. When I was a youngster I came from a very poor family but the one bit of kitchen equipment I do remember was a press to remove tomato skins and seeds from cooked tomatoes. I don't think it was called a food mill in those days but it is exactly what I want and is hard to find these days.

  8. How do these differ from bricks, and what can CEBs be used for?

Normal bricks are fired in a kiln. CEB's are made of earth having 20 to 30% clay, some cement and enough water to make the mixture damp and placed under high pressure in a special brick making machine. The compressed bricks are then left to dry.

The CEB's are used to build houses etc. They are very easy to lay as they fit together like LEGO blocks.

  9. Precisely. Each time I extend my visa, I get a single re-entry permit. It's not likely I'll want to leave twice in a year, but if I do, then I just pay another 1,000 baht.

In your case, paying 3,800 baht for a multiple re-entry hardly seems worth it unless you are going to leave Thailand at least 4 times in the next 6 months.

On the TM 8 form they ask where you are going, when and returning when. How do you answer this if you don't know where and when you are going sometime in the unknown future.

  10. I want to buy some compressed earth blocks. I used to buy them on Hang Dong Road between Hang Dong and Sanpatong but she doubled the price on me so now I am looking for another source.

What is the normal price per block? Does anyone know a place where these blocks are made, preferably south of Chiang Mai?

  11. if you haven't been there How can you make a judgement

Maybe all these people who are posting negativity are competitors or friends of competitors or people with agendas. Don't believe what others say. Stop by and make your own judgement.

I have stopped by and made my own judgement: much too expensive for what is being offered. Three or four TV screens would have been sufficient for the location.

I have no agenda apart from getting value for money.

  12. ............ after the usual bunch of freeloaders turned up as they do everywhere on the first night for their free food and free drink, you know the ones, they go there once because its free but wont ever go again especially if they have to pay !!!!!

I must have missed the free drink. Won't ever go again, especially if they have to pay 80 Baht plus tax for a can of Sprite.

The pool tables may as well not be there because there is no room to play a lot of the shots one would normally play. How can they spend that much money without proper planning?

  13.

The proposed new cm>lamphun road should fix that, if it ever goes ahead.  Lot's of opposition from some pretty influential ppl in Ban Wangtan.

What route does the proposed CM-Lamphun road follow? Is there a link giving info regarding this proposed new road?

  14. Well, I am sure from the reviews that the food is of decent quality and at a reasonable price--but, we took the trouble to find this place yesterday, Monday, and it was closed--not a brilliant way to capaitalise on all this new found free advertising.

Incidentally--the directions given at the beginning of this thread, I believe by the OP, were not in my opinion the easiest way to find the place--it's quite simple from the 'Somphot Chiang mai 700 Pi Road'--the one from Big C hang Dong to San Kamphaeng.

We will try again when we get the time.

My Kitchen Restaurant is open from 8 am to 8 pm and is closed on Thursdays.

The owner had to close the restaurant a couple of half days because his mother was involved in a fairly serious motor cycle accident.

If you want to check whether the restaurant is open or make a phone order, the mobile number is 081-602-7100

I tried the directions given in the post above. If you are coming from the south of Big C, Hang Dong I agree that is a much better way than the original directions.

  15. Quote from OP:

For a while there I thought he might not do it but there has been a late surge of posts and he has come home strong today.

With a week to go till he has a full year on Thaivisa, Northernjohn has romped in with 3651 posts today.......that is a very impressive (more than) 10 posts a day every day for a year....
