  1. I need to drive my girlfriends car next month with a international driving licence backed up by a UK licence. I am concerned about ensuring that I will be fully covered from an insurance standpoint. Clearly I could ask my gf to get me named as an additional driver on her policy but I understand that without a Thai licence I may not be fully covered. Furthermore whilst she will do her best to follow my instructions my lack of Thai will mean that I will be unable to satisfy myself that I am properly covered. Has anyone got ideas as to how to I can solve the problem with certainty?

    Thanks very much

  2. I am planning to spend a few days in Kanchanaburi on my next trip to Thailand. Having read through the various relevant posts on this forum it appears that you have a choice of either staying in town or riverside near the bridge. If I stay riverside I would like to be able to see the bridge from the hotel and I have seen the photo from the Felix but am concerned that it is on the other side of the river from the other hotels and may therefore be more difficult to find tuktuks from there. I am trying to weigh up the various options and would greatly appreciate any recommendations for good quality hotels both in town and riverside with a view of the bridge.

  3. She likes KLM but a tall guy would have problems with leg room as the seat pitch is 31" against 34" on Thai. The crew are usually very good but the food and entertainment somewhat limited The main reasons she goes KLM is reliability, the easy transfer and the journey time which is a lot quicker than via Heathrow. KLM also make an announcement in Thai prior to landing which I presume deals with transfer information and Schipol is a very easy airport to transfer through.

  4. I am looking for the best place to watch Premier League football and eat good Thai food at the same time in a football yob free environment in lower Suk with a TG on a Saturday night later this month. For various reasons I have discounted the Huntsman and Gullivers.I have enjoyed watching football at the Office on soi 33 but never eaten there and wonder about the extent of the Thai menu.I am concerned that the Londoner would be too busy on a Saturday and am also unsure of the Thai menu. All help and advice greatly appreciated

  6. I hold a UK passport and am in the fortunate position of being able to have a 40 day trip next March and would like to explore the possibility of taking my tg travelling on a thai passport to some of the following countries and would welcome any input into visa difficulties and the likely reception to be afforded to a farang/tg couple by the people of those countries:-

    Singapore,Cambodia,Malaysia,Hong Kong,Vietnam and Laos.

If people think that I am likely to have a better time by satiating the tg's thirst for

foreign travel by a quick trip to Singapore and spending the rest of the time by touring los then please let me know.

Any tips on the best places to take a Khon Kaen tg would be greatly appreciated.

  7. I have had it confirmed today that the new £300 limit does also apply to overseas withdrawals.I have solved the problem by opening a second flexaccount today to give me two £300 withdrawals on the odd occasion it is necessary.

I have been given a visa debit card this time as opposed to a simple cash card having been promised that the exchange rate on the debit card will be the same as with the cash card so far as cash withdrawals are concerned. Can anyone confirm what exchange you get with the debit card for purchases as opposed to withdrawals?Do they take a 2.75% profit on such purchases in the same way Natwest visa credit cards do?

  8. I called into my local Nationwide branch in the UK earlier this week to see a sign stating that as from Feb 1st 2005 the daily ATM withdrawal limit was being reduced to £300 to bring it in line with other banks. The girl at the counter thought that this new reduced limit would also apply to withdrawals overseas.I checked with the Nationwide help line and they confirmed that to be the case although did not sound confident.I am currently awaiting a response to an e-mail I have sent them in the hope of getting a definitive answer but would appreciate hearing from other Nationwide users with better information and indeed from anyone currently in Bangkok who would be kind enough to test this new limit after Feb 1st.

  9. Assuming you live in Chiangmai, and only draw 'taxable' rental income from UK:

Why make regular transfers? Make one annual transfer, with enough money coming in to live off, and to satisfy Immigration Department requirements. You pay one transfer fee of around 25 quid for the year.

Open a web-based Sterling savings account, and make sure you are registered to receive interest gross on that account - currently Halifax Web Saver is 4.9%.

Thai banks offer 0.75% at best on any savings, and you are taxed 15% at source automatically above a certain deposit level (can't remember how much). You can't register for gross interest paid on Thai accounts.

Instruct your rental agent (or set it up yourself) to transfer remains of your tax-paid rental income to this account, monthly, and accrue gross interest. Transfer 'living funds' annually before your Immigration visit.

Use ATM to access funds over and above what you might need to live off.

Keep all ATM receipts to show Immigration, along with your annual transfer record. :o

  10. Following the excellent advice in many threads concerning withdrawing UK cash in LOS I opened today a Flexaccount with the Nationwide.I was told that I would get a cash card usable at 462000 atms worldwide displaying the Cirrus sign. The alternative cards were a visa debit card or a visa credit card.I would be very grateful if people could that the atms in LOS generally accept Cirrus cards and specifically the one outside the Landmark on suk takes this Nationwide card as opposed to visa debit or credit cards. If anyone knows the same info for Hua Hin please let me know. Finally the daily limit is £500 although I have seen references to both 20000 and 30000 in previous posts. What is the current daily limit in LOS?

  11. I checked out Hua Hin Suite last week and liked everything apart from the safe deposit arrangement in reception which looked more like a filing cabinet with a padlock.Has anyone had any experience of using this safe deposit and was it secure?
