Traffic police in Sakon Nakhon rescued a four-year-old boy found holding onto the rear of an ice delivery truck on August 17, after the vehicle had travelled for more than 10 kilometres.
The child was spotted at about 12.20pm at the city gate intersection in Sakon Nakhon Municipality, where the truck had stopped at traffic lights. Officers saw him standing on the vehicle's rear steps and gripping the truck before telling the driver to pull over.
A woman who saw the incident recorded a video and shared it on Facebook. The driver appeared shocked and confused when police told him the boy had been clinging to the back of his vehicle.
Stopped at city-gate junction
The driver had delivered ice near Kasetsart University Sakon Nakhon Campus before heading towards Chiang Khruea subdistrict.
He had not stopped during the journey of more than 10 kilometres before traffic police alerted him to the child at the rear of the truck.
Police said the boy did not appear frightened and had not been injured. He initially did not speak to officers, who took him to Mueang Sakon Nakhon Police Station and gave him snacks and milk while they tried to identify his family.
Family found after police enquiries
Officers contacted other police stations to ask whether any child had been reported missing, but there had been no such reports at that time.
After several hours of enquiries, police obtained information about the boy's family and asked the Sakon Nakhon Child and Family Shelter to help locate his parents.
The shelter coordinated with the local municipality, which sent officials to collect the child and return him safely to his family.
There were no reports explaining why the boy had climbed onto the truck, and no account from family members about the circumstances leading to the incident.
