Five out of 289 returnees from Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia screened by health officials at Hat Yai international airport are suspected to be exposed to MERS (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome), Dr Suvich Thampalo, director of 12th Zone Diseases Prevention and Control Office, said on Thursday (Sept 14).

However, he insisted that the five returnees are only treated as suspected MERS cases and they will be subjected to more tests after the incubation period of the disease which will take up to 14 days from the time of their exposure to the disease to the time of the showing of symptoms.

He went on saying that health officials would follow up the health conditions of every returnee from Hajj pilgrimage to find out any of them have such symptoms as coughing, difficulty in breathing, fatigue, vomiting or diarrhea.
