Bus To Chiang Mai From Pattaya

I have always flown to Chiang Mai, but thought I would try the bus from Pattaya next time.

Would you recommend this? How many hours does it take on the bus?

I wouldn't recommend it coz it'll take about 12 hours. If you do go try Nakhonchai air company. Supposed to have the best buses & the fewest stops.

I'd take the trains.

Personally I would go with the train. The roads from BKK North for the first couple of hours are not brilliant. Most importantly there's not a lot to see of any great interest until you get to around Sukhothai. At least on the train you can wander around a bit and meet a greater range of people. Better yet, take NOK air or similar, 1,400 baht and one hour of travel - a bit more money but a lot less time.

The train is not convienient because you have to go to Bangkok first and then transfer to the Pattaya train.

The bus is much faster and direct.
