Loaded
The train loses it's charm after a few hours. I've done CNX to Lampang several times. leaves around 9am and gets to Lampang a couple of hours later. I stroll around and when ready catch a bus back. I wouldn't rely on the train station's timetable for the return trip.
sfokevin
A couple times a year we do a train overnight to Lampang... Saturday morning train... tuktuk to a Riverside Hotel (book a river view with breakfast included)... We usually rent a scooter and ride out to a Wat outside of town to tambon ... In the evening there is a great Thai restaurant a block up from the river my Thai partner likes and then a walk on the Saturday night walking street... next morning walk the river road to a old house museum)... then return via afternoon train... And as said don’t trust the written return schedule... better to go to the train station an hour earlier and eat lunch nearby... take a good book for the train ;-) http://www.theriverside-lampang.com/ Aroy One Baht. https://goo.gl/maps/fu9v87bjyGF2 Wat Phra That Lampang Luang https://goo.gl/maps/tFvP1mEFqAK2 บ้านเสานัก https://goo.gl/maps/GDXYf9ShaHp

If I take sleeper I'll take last one so I can look at scenery in morning for a few hours before reaching destination. I'll never take a bus if I can take a train, even if I have to wait for the ( almost always ) late train. IMO there's no point in being here if I'm not going to look at it when I get the chance. thaibeachlovers
I've been to Uttaradit many times, but mostly just passing through. I'd never willingly go there as a destination though. Lampang yes.
