webfact
Interior Ministry to enforce 7 road safety measures to curb road fatalities BANGKOK, 8 December 2017 (NNT) - The Ministry of Interior is planning to invest more to ensure the safety of Thai motorists. Speaking at the 13th Thailand Road Safety Seminar, Deputy Interior Minister Suthee Makboon said 7 new measures will be enforced to lower the number of road fatalities in the country. These measures include a 50 km/hr speed limit in urban areas, a minimum age requirement for people to ride a big bike, and the installation of an anti-lock braking system for all motorcycles, to name a few. Suthee added that every province must have safety zones for pedestrians and cyclists. The seminar was organized by the Road Safety Group Thailand and Road Safety Center with the objective to promote road safety. According to the organizer, 20,000 people on average are killed in road accidents every year. It is equivalent to a 500 billion baht GDP loss per annum. -- nnt 2017-12-

JAG
The vast majority of motorcycle fatalities are on scooters and 110cc "step throughs" not big bikes. Many of the motorcycles in rural areas don't have registrations, tax or insurance. Good luck getting them fitted with anti lock braking systems. Sent from my KENNY using Thailand Forum - Thaivisa mobile app
Cadbury
Very admirable "ideas" indeed. How many other conferences, meetings, seminars, forums and buffet lunches did it take to come up with those. As normal in Thailand these dreams will never be converted to reality. DM07
And here is, how many of these "safety measures" will be implemented and followed through: the number begins with a "z" and ends with an "ero"!

fakename
Thats right! Big bikes seem to be the problem! Sounds like they have some really good ideas, or maybe just ran out of good ideas.
quandow
There are already PLENTY of regulations on the books. It's the ENFORCEMENT thing that is missing.
connda
These pronouncement keep getting more grandiose as well as absurd all the time. 50 kph speed limits - enforcement: radar guns w/picture - small fine via mail - effect on speeding? 1 out of 10. Effect on revenue collection? 10 out of 10 <Cha-Ching> Anti-lock breaks on all motorcycles - enforcement: road blocks - 400 THB fine - effect of accidents? 2 out of 10. Effect on revenue collection? 10 out of 10 Practicality: 0 out of 10 (how are they going to retrofit all the motorcycles in Thailand and how are the poor, the primary motorcycle riders, going to afford it?) Age requirement for big bikes - enforcement: road blocks - 400 THB fine with a 'catch, fine, release' policy - Effect on accidents? 0 out of 10. Effect on revenue? 0 out of 10. Practicality: How many underaged Thai kids do you see riding around on a Ducati? Safety zones for bicycles and pedestrians - enforcement: After the fact (ie, after the accident). Effect on accidents? 0 out of 10. Effect on revenue? 0 out of 10. They don't enforce the bicycles and pedestrians safety zones they already have. Practicality: How do you take 1/2 of a lane out of a two lane road for 'bicycles' and expect that having only 1.5 lanes for cars won't impact traffic and cause more accidents, example: Thapae Road, Chiang Mai. And the carnage is motorcycle riders, not bicyclists. Helmets and seatbelts. Net Effect on accidents? 0 out of 10 (it's the same policy as they have now) - enforcement: road blocks - 400 THB fine - Net effect of accidents? 0 out of 10. Effect on revenue collection? 0 out of 10 (They are already shaking down the public about as much as they can, nothing new - can't bleed a rock). Placing cops in patrol cars to pull over and fine drivers for moving violations. Effect on accidents? 10 out of 10. Effect on revenue? 10 out of 10. Practicality: 0 out of 10 (That wasn't one of the 7 recommendations. Thais will adopt Western traffic policing standards about the time Hell freezes over, or it snows on Doi Internon.) Still Amazing Thailand. Edited December 8, 2017 by connda
thhMan
No mention of getting the Police out and doing their Job? I still see them at the lights surrounded by riders with no helmets Just that would be amazing!

Khun Paul
When they stop and breath test drivers of buses and coaches and mini-vans arrest those who are over the limit then and only then will I believe they are serious .
Humpy
How about some simple TV 'adverts ' on road safety to highlight the idiots who do not know how to use a roundabout, traffic lights etc. ..... to include actual footage of the idiots with their tinted windows, windscreens adorned with ecclesiastical nick-knacks , dead and injured motor cyclists, without helmets, laying in the road, school children sitting on the school bus roof or hanging on the back of Baht buses to and from school . Perhaps the PM should have a ''crackdown'' on all the local Police Chiefs to get them to sort their officers out to get the job done. Best the PM pays a visit to the highways and villages up here in Issan and sample the traffic chaos ....... or am I dreaming ?

Minimum age law for 'big bikes' makes sense, assuming that means 150cc or more. But, what the hell do they intend to do about the bigger hazard of primary school-age kids riding around on their 110cc Waves? Why is it, in Thailand, that even the top dogs appear to be unable or unwilling to grasp all of the nettle at once?
