webfact Posted February 12, 2018 Share Posted February 12, 2018 Ex-southern Army chief dies at 93 By The Nation Former Fourth Army Area Commander Gen Harn Leenanon , who was credited for restoring peace in the deep South for many years, has died of natural causes. He was 93 years old. Phra Mongkut Klao Hospital, Bangkok, said Harn died there on Saturday evening. He was the southern Army chief from 1981 to 1983, during which time he created development projects as part of a personal crusade that successfully suspended the rebellion in the deep South. The insurgency resurfaced in 2004 during the tenure of the Thaksin government as rebels raided an Army base in Narathiwat and stole 413 guns, which were later used in their military operations.
