This is just good old mindless, violent, guilty pleasurous FUN! See Denzel single handedly deal rough justice to corrupt cops and Russian gangsters! See Denzel working at a humble Home Depot job by day, righting wrongs all night. if you could never envision anyone filling the role done to perfection by Edward Woodward (R.I.P.), think again. There's a New Equalizer in town, and Denzel is The Man. Denzel must've figured, "Hey, if Bobby Downey Junior can make outrageous coin with that dumbass Iron Man series, I can turn this Equalizer thing into gold for my Golden Years!" Antoine Fuqua's direction turns this thrill ride into a much better than average parade of mayhem. EIGHT, with a corkscrew through the neck! Frank James Posted February 8, 2015 Share Posted February 8, 2015 Gone Girl... Ben Affleck is one of those actors who seems to arouse strong feeling in movie fans. People either seem to hate him, apparently over his high profile private life, or "love" him. I think he's a pretty decent actor, who has turned in good performances in most of the films I've seen him in. He carries a big load in Gone Girl, and sells the role quite well. He's a regular Midwestern guy who went to the Big Apple and did OK for a while, and ended up marrying above his class, to a lady he perhaps should have checked out a little closer. The best selling novel by Gillian Flynn has been turned into a very interesting film, with the screenplay also written by the author. That is highly unusual for a Hollywood movie. The action is very taut, and unpredictable, but for me the momentum slowed down quite a bit toward the end, and the believability of the story stated to fall apart. Rosamund Pike really owns this picture. Here's yet another UK actor cast as a completely believable (except that she's a pathological liar) American fairly hi-so lady. She's the best female psycho on film since Glenn Close threw acid all over Michael Douglas' Volvo, and drowned the rabbit, in Fatal Attraction. ("I WON"T be Ignored!!") The one glaring weak link, in my opinion, is the casting of Neil Patrick Harris as the ex-boyfriend, rich guy rescuer. He's a fine actor, but I just couldn't suspend disbelief, and forget that he is a famously well-adjusted gay guy, in "real life." This doesn't mean he should always play a gay man, but the chemistry between he and Rosamund just isn't visible on screen in this one. At 2 hours, twenty-eight minutes, the film feels about a half hour too long. All of the points have been well covered before two hours is up. I know that many will disagree. A male model most of the time (for French connection clothing)when he wasn't working on his Dad's market stall, he did dive though & made the national team. It stars Martin Compston and John Hannah. The film was deemed so controversial that Strathclyde police refused to help the filmmakers make the film in Glasgow, Ferris's native city. The production team had to film in London instead due to the lack of support from the legal authorities in Glasgow. Here was a cognitive psychology professor of all things and was starting to lose her cognitive abilities. I am always a bit disappointed with books that are made into movies, but I was invited to watch this movie and I really do think it was quite well made and Julianne Moore played the role of Alice Howland very well. Yes, I know she won the Bafta for it last night and I do like her very much, but I would have given the award to Rosamund Pike in Gone Girl, though not a lot between them. Frank James Posted February 9, 2015 Share Posted February 9, 2015 The Judge (2014) Here we have Robert Downey Jr. stepping away from the Iron Man cartoons, and his very unconvincing take on the Sherlock Holmes legend, (Jonny Lee Miller and Benedict C. have that one COVERED, Bob!) and playing the type of character that nobody does better...the fast talking, somewhat annoying, brilliant lawyer. The Judge is a rather old fashioned father and son reunion type of picture, that I usually enjoy. The ultimate example of this genre is the old Gene Hackman masterwork, I Never Sang for My Father. Robert Duvall is excellent as his father, the old judge, who is now up on charges for vehicular homicide. He doesn't want his son, the big city lawyer, to defend him, but of course he changes his mind. The whole cast is a fantastic ensemble, and the story, although fairly predictable, is done quite well. There's a great scene inside a bar in which Downey "convinces" a bunch of lowlifes not to start a fight, by quickly rattling off all of the legal consequences such action will bring. I was worried that my expectations would be to high. But I must say the old "Breaking Bad"-feeling is definitely there (well, at least for me). Please continue that way!
