Tt&t Maxnet - For Those Of You Who Use It

I now have both TOT and TT&T. So far I am not impressed with TT&T's ability to go further than than it's own servers with any speed that is worth using. It's 5:30PM Pattaya time and I have a 1024/512 Indy package that when I use their speedtest

http://www.maxnet.co.th/speedtest/ it claims I get almost 900 of my promised 1024.

If I use a speedtest in the USA such as http://performance.toast.net/ it claims to give me a whopping 56

My test to Vonage's servers is slightly better giving me anywhere from 128 to 470 with an upload that hovers consistently in the 400's.

Okay, with that said, I am at the end of my block, but the speed test to their own servers shows that my distance is not causing me problems, it is their connection to the USA. I'm hoping it will get better after 11PM which is when I use it most.

I certainly am not going to bark at the moon over the speed and I'm not going to downgrade my TOT Cyber Bus Gold unless the speed increased greatly.

I have a few technical questions:

TOT demands a MTU of 1428.

I have TT&T set for 1492 and email is flowing with no issues. Is that the proper rate that those of you who purchased routers from TT&T are using? My router is an Xavi x8122R and came from TOT. I changed the settings to make it work with TT&T.

the MTU is not going to make it work or not work.. It could just slightly affect the performance. I have TTT Maxnet with the Billion router and makes no difference adjusting the MTU below 1492.

Standard performance for the TT&T Indy package (=home package)

I have the Maxnet@life package (currently called premier) which is a small business package, and I get over 85% of rated speed all the time.

The indy package gets shared with at least 40 subscribers, so low speeds at busy times are perfectly normal.

At least Maxnet is quite clear about it, at least on their website.

http://www.maxnet.co.th/product_Indy.php

And you'll clearly see they state that this package is best used for "Thai Surf", additionally they also clearly state that VOIP and P2P connections have limited bandwidth available...

Wow! Kudos to TTT for that website! I wish TOT had something like that - fast, not flash-laden, and informative. I tried several times but could not find this information on TOTs website. E.g. what speeds/QoS they offer at what prices.

Is there an English version of their website? I see NOW what I should have been shown when ordering. Ok - lemonade from lemons - I'm getting crap speeds to Vonage. I'm paying for 1024 but getting 1/10 of that right now. The upload is better than the download and this bodes well for Vonage. I made a phone call and was told I was clearer than normal.

Here is a what if - what if I tell them to charge me the 590 baht a month and just use it for my phone? Could my speed get any slower? If I use their speedtest, I'm getting almost 900mbps - this hasn't changed all day long. So what if I just made it a phone line? The reason I am thinking about this, is that if I am online remote controlling, or downloading, the VOIP gets choppy. Having it on a second DSL line just for that could solve a problem.

Now the 2nd question - if I use PFsense - to Round Robin load balance between the two DSL lines am I shooting myself in the foot?

Thats a bit of information not shown on the website...

But I know personally the technician of TT&T responsible for setting up the DSLAM at the exchanges' side, so it's a bit of insider information...

It's there at the dslam where the contention ratio is set!

I think there needs to be a website to explain why you get the speed you are getting. There are many factors to think about when it comes to digital communications (DSL-Digital Subscriber Line).

* Telephone Line

* Distance from phone company

* Number of users online

If your home is farther than 5km from the phone company then you won't get the speed advertised. The greater the distance, the less the speed.

If the telephone line on the telephone poles has problems that cause some kind of interference or reflection, then your speed will be less.

If there are many users online, they will eat up of the available bandwidth on that telephone line.

Here is some more info I found on the internet about DSL.http://computing-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com/DSL

(Digital Subscriber Line) A technology that dramatically increases the digital capacity of ordinary telephone lines (the local loops) into the home or office. DSL speeds are based on the distance between the customer and telco central office. There are two main categories. Asymmetric DSL (ADSL) is for Internet access, where fast downstream is required, but slow upstream is acceptable. Symmetric DSL (SDSL, HDSL, etc.) is designed for connections that require high speed in both directions.

DSL provides "always-on" operation. At the telco central office, DSL traffic is aggregated in a unit called the DSL Access Multiplexor (DSLAM) and forwarded to the appropriate ISP or data network. DSL arrived in the late 1990s with more versions and alphabet soup than most any other new transmission technology.

Asymmetric DSL

Fast Down - Slow Up

ADSL - (Asymmetric DSL)

ADSL shares ordinary telephone lines by using frequencies above the voice band, but the higher frequencies interfere with regular telephone usage. The first versions required a visit from the phone company to install a POTS splitter that divides the line into separate lines for DSL and telephone. Subsequent splitterless versions (also known as G.Lite, Universal ADSL and ADSL Lite) eliminate the phone company visit, but require that the user plug DSL low-pass filters into every telephone outlet that serves ordinary telephones, answering machines and faxes.

ADSL is available in two modulation schemes: Discrete Multitone (DMT) or Carrierless Amplitude Phase (CAP)

I will be most interested in the speed during the wee hours of the morning - it might make it worth it.

At midnight I'm getting:

189d

406u

Backwards

That tells me that the upload is where it ought to be (to America) about 80 percent of promised speed and the download sucks because all the little script kiddies are still downloading their porn.

I wonder what time mommy and daddy tuck them in?

I want to download my porn.

349d at 1AM - I see a trend. I'm predicting 700 down from the USA by 5am.

Uploads still pegged at 400 and change

Yep!

To Vonage in America

855d

295 up

The little ba&$##$#$&ards go to bed at midnight. It's contentious contention - WELL.

1. Only a speed test in your country is really valid.

Going overseas you are affected by all the links in between and your ISP has no control there.

2. Check what the ISP offers

Here in Malaysia TM Streamyx says I can only expect 70% of the 512kb I pay for, due to "overheads" :o

What they really mean is that they are limiting me to 457Kb/s with their packet shaping,

which is really naughty.
