Can anyone help?

My husband & I are retiring to Chiang Mai in December & I want to take household effect with us BUT the cost of import duties is horrendous (about £3000) and we are on a limited budget. Does any one know if there is any way round this?

I know if you have a work permit it is duty free, but of course

we do not have them.

Any help will be very gratefully received.
