Koh Samui Municipality joins hands with DLD, PRD, to make Samui island rabies-free

BANGKOK, 10 May 2019 (NNT) - Surat Thani has implemented the Disease-free Animals, Save Humans from Rabies project under the wish of Her Royal Highness Princess Chulabhorn from 2017 – 2020.

 

Surat Thani Provincial Office of Livestock Development said no rabies outbreak has been found in Koh Samui district. The Surat Thani Provincial Office of Livestock Development has a measure to control and monitor rabies together with Koh Samui Municipality Mayor Ramnate Jaikwang.

 

They have determined a policy to create a rabies-free zone in the area by cooperating with Surat Thani, Koh Samui Municipality, Thai-United States Cooperation Center for Public Health and related agencies. More than 60 percent of dogs and cats have been vaccinated. People are advised to have their pets sterilized and vaccinated to upgrade Samui island into the first rabies-free area in Thailand and Southeast Asia.

 

Surat Thani Provincial Office of Public Relations has provided knowledge about rabies and encouraged people to raise dogs and cats properly to reduce the risk of rabies both in people and animals and to provide people with knowledge and understanding so that they will be aware of dangers of rabies and behave correctly when being bitten by a dog.

"Encourage people to raise dogs and cats properly"!  Not a chance in hell!  Dogs are just an accessory for most Thais when buying/renting a house; the owners of the animals don't give a toss where the dogs go and what they do!  Of course, should their dog bite somebody, it's not their dog!

 

"Behave correctly when being bitten by a dog"!  So, the onus is on the victim to take the correct course of action when being bitten; not too difficult for Thais as quite a few seem to carry guns.  But what about the expats and tourists?  What are they supposed to do, whilst avoiding being locked-up for cruelty to animals!

Fine in theory but now let us look at reality.

 

Soi dogs usually adopt the owner, not the other way round. There are 14 dogs in the area where I live, only 3 or 4 were purchases. Most Thais buy 'lap' dogs. The rest were street dogs who just turned up/were dumped

 

Thailand is a Buddhist country. They do not usually euthanise dogs except in special circumstances. eg one friend 'adopted' a street dog but he never registered it with a vet. Bad move. When the dog was very old and sick, he took it to a vet to try and get it euthanised. No luck. Vet said 'I have to show documented medical history to be able to buy the drugs'.
