Back from Thailand, Illegal logger loses leg after stepping on landmine

Featured Replies

One of 10 men who illegally logged timber and then crossed the border from Thailand into Preah Vihear province last week lost a leg after he stepped on a landmine.

The men were carrying logs into Cambodian territory from Thailand through a corridor in the Dangrek Mountains in Preah Vihear province’s Choam Ksan district.

Choam Ksan district police chief O Seng told The Post on Saturday that the accident occurred in the Prolong Bes Doung area located in the east of the Anses corridor.

Harsh punishment for illegal logging, but my sympathy is limited.

VERY well put - i was thinking along similar lines.

This area of mountain and forests in Northern Cambodia is still littered with many thousands, if not millions, of live anti-personnel land mines and is extremely dangerous if you wander from recognized "clear" areas. They were laid by the Khmer Rouge to stop unsympathetic Cambodians from escaping their own country. Sadly in this case it was the reverse even though it was illegal logging.
