Police were called to the Cozy Beach area of Jomtien after a farang was washed ashore following a presumed nautical accident. Mr Erik Lappalaineut, aged 53, had been devoid of mortal existence for an hour or so but was recognised by several witnesses as being a resident of a local hotel. Jet ski rental hawker Mr Surien said he had noticed the Finn drinking whiskey earlier in the day and he seemed quite happy at that time – looking out to sea and merrily sunbathing. But Surien added that the guy had consumed most of the contents of one bottle before wading out into the water where he soon disappeared from sight. When he failed to resurface, it was obvious a fatality had occurred. The Finn was on holiday with his wife who had gone out shopping during the vulnerable period. The couple had checked into the Cozy Beach hotel on March 10. The body was sent for autopsy to police forensics in Bangkok to check the cause of death.
