My visa says iam allowed to stay till 22nd.  However, if i fly 23rd early afternoon, is that ok or would i pay for overstay?

You will be on one day of overstay.

If you leave from either airport in Bangkok you will not be fined 500 baht for one day of overstay.

you will have a 1 day overstay, but at both Bangkok airports you will get a stamp but no fine.

It will not be an issue for future entries. Short overstays are common and you won't receive any negative attitude from imm.

Ubonjoe advice is always correct. I was under impression one day overstay was often waived. Clearly I'm wrong. So have the 500baht when enter overstay office. 

 I had a 1 day overstay on a visa exemption in 2017. I did not have to pay a fine, I did however get a little 24hr overstay stamp in my passport.

It is not a standard issue overstay stamp, but one that specifies that you overstated under 24 hours.

 

As it stands it shouldn’t affect anything in the future.

It is sometimes waived. Plenty of people have exited with less than 24 hour overstay and not received any overstay stamp.

Otherwise you can just go through immigration just before midnight and sleep inside the airport if you don't want the stamp.

 

Depends on your flight time.

Not necessarily. Often a boarding pass is only issued up to 3 hours before flight. Even if you do online check-in you often need go to doc check max 3 hrs prior to flight.
