Anyone who’s been laid off work due to the Covid-19 outbreak can register for unemployment benefits online.

Labour Minister MR Chatu Mongol Sonakul said workers who contributed to the Social Security Fund for at least six months can register at https://empui.doe.go.th within 30 days of being laid off.

“They’ll receive compensation equivalent to 50 per cent of their regular wage in not more than 180 days,” he said.

“Those interested in freelance jobs or working at home can get advice and information from the Department of Employment.”

Suchat Pornchaiwiseskul, the department’s director-general, said it was encouraging people to avoid busy places by promoting its online e-services.

“We’ve also installed job boxes in communities, department stores and at government offices nationwide to facilitate job seekers and employers. They don’t have to go to an employment office and thus can save both time and money.”

Between last October and February, 382,726 people registered for unemployment, a 4.4-per-cent increase over the same period last year, Suchat said.

“In February, 84,177 people registered. People can contact the department hotline for more information – 1506 press 2.”

Suchat Pornchaiwiseskul might be interested to know that millions of workers are NOT covered by anything like the Social Security Insurance.

I had staff who insisted not being in the SSI to save their contribution of 5% of their salary, but not more than B750/monthly (corresponds to a salary of THB 15K/monthly). As I had made it a mandatory condition without exception - they had no choice. But all those "service workers" in bars, unemployed farmers in construction business etc. ....
