new farang
Is porn illegal in Thailand? Yup. As is prostitution. Both are very hard to find... I thought the discussion about Patpong was nice too, including that "bar proprietors and their staff were cooperative. " I'm sure they were very cooperative and accommodating indeed. I like what another member wrote earlier... to the affect of "Next he'll say he went into KFC but couldn't find any chicken." Wow, this news story is a real gem. Rich! lor
You and I know the truth but many people in the world have never been to Thailand or even know where Pantip Plaza is. If the deputy Prime Minisyer says there is no porn or copied films on sale then they will believe it. As for this country you forget the culture of the Thais. A man much higher in the society than them (Deputy Prime Minister no less) has made a statement. This statement MUST be true and he will be believed. If you try and argue the point with a Thai they will get angry that you dare to question him, as if the idea that he might be wrong was an insult not only to him but to all Thailand including themselves. That is how politicians here can blatantly lie to the media (media also means the Thai People) and when the lie is found out (normaly within 12 hours) no one takes any notice and it's business as usual! Anyway I am not going to say he is Stupid because I remember the law giving a prison sentance for anyone critisizing the new regime is still in force! But that is the only reason. bob6023
DPM raids Pantip Plaza and seizes 1 pornographic VCD The Deputy Prime Minister led a raid on Pantip Plaza to suppress vice and intellectual property crimes. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Social Development and Human Security Paiboon Wattanasiritham To put a face to a name: He's also the instigator of this other wonderful thread: Pornographic-cartoon websites to be closed If nothing else, the man knows his porn. btw, he received his university education in the UK, so that might explain a few things. nikster
Would it be cynical to suggest that possibly perhaps maybe somebody had advance notice of this visit...? Nope. Unfortunately it's pretty common that those people are always aware of this type of crackdown in advance. These actions are always media stunts. Seeing how mobile most guys selling these things in Pantip are, I think it would take them less than 60 seconds to completely vacate the building. I don't even think they would need a police tip-off - one person posted at the entrance keeping their eyes open would be enough. The whole obsession with Pantip plaza is absurd - I remember when there was a "crackdown" on illegal DVDs not too long ago. Suddenly DVDs were hard to come by in Pantip, and one had to go into secret back rooms to buy them. Meanwhile, any other ordinary shopping mall had bright little shops selling illegal DVDs in plain sight. TIT...

sibeymai
He only seized one porn CD ?.......he must have a favourite Then went to Patpong to verify it against the real thing. One has to be absolutely sure it is porn before making such important announcements .... Wouldn't want the public to be mislead would we ? Bagwan
I suggest that the result might have been different if they had sent along a Vice Admiral. richard10365
They don't seem to have a problem finding the x-prime minister and his family guilty of wrong doing but when they go to Pantip they only find one porn CD. Maybe they should send the guy who is trying to rid Thailand of prono cartoons. Maybe he would have more luck. He also found no illegal activities at Patpong. Thats like not finding any rice in Thailand. If thats the case, then everything that happens at Patpong must be legal. One step forw........ wait, scratch that....... we'll just go with 2 steps back and forget forward progress. Maybe he found the marijuna first, smoked it and then conducted the search. navajo
Awesome work by the deputy prime minister!! 1 porno vcd!!! The shop owner will be charged for selling copies and fake orgasms. Then the key is to sell copies of "real-orgasms." That must be the only logical reason for charging him. None of those people who have charged this shop owner have ever had a real orgasm. My guess is the same goes for that censorship group that censors movies here among other things. They all want to have a real orgasm. How many hypocrits make up that board of review? Barryz
Actually, I think you guys have misread this situation entirely. The plan obviously was to deliberately avoid seizing large numbers of pirated CDs and DVD and pornographic videos in order to avoid criticism that there was a major problem here that had not been tackled in the past and nipped in the bud, so to speak. The message here is that there's not a major problem but there is a problem and the government is on the ball. Don't rock the boat guys. We all appreciate cheap software, don't we? Same situation in Patpong Rd. It's a night-time market straight down the middle of the road with the attraction of a few scantily clad, nubile ladies glimsed through the doorways as one walks down the street doing one's shopping. Families walk down that street with their toddlers, sometimes pushing prams as well. We don't want any over-reaction here, do we .

You want it stamped out entirely and completely. You think that Patpong Road should be shut down and renamed Virginity Street and all prostitution laws in Thailand should be followed to the letter of the law. Right? Or have I misread you?
