The coach of the Thailand women’s weightlifting team that lost three world titles in a doping scandal in 2018 has been charged with a doping offence and provisionally suspended.

Liu Ning, from China, was national women’s team coach at the time and has been blamed for Thailand’s nine positive tests at the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) World Championships.

Liu is said to have administered a prohibited substance, knowingly or unknowingly, via a massage gel he used to relieve athletes’ muscle injuries.

Convenient that this explanation absolves the athletes of any responsibility and limits damage to a single rogue coach.

I wonder what they were expecting when they recruited a Chinese weightlifting coach...

That it absolves the athletes is not so strange, whole parts of the east-german and russian teams were using doping for decades without knowing it: if your coach tells you to take some pills or some gels you do it (these are often kids who know little to nothing about drugs and surely wont question their coach). The question is more how one single coach would go completely unchecked: isn't there a sports commission overseeing him and monitoring blood values during the year? Or an assistant coach who reports back to his superiors? Or were they all blinded by the success the guy was booking?
