Hi guys

I borrowed a copy of Windows XP from a friend, called Windows XP Crystal edition which along with windows xp service pack 2 also contains other useful utilities like open office and bit torrent etc etc. But when i put it in my cd drive it and tell it to reinstall windows and the other utilties it tells me to insert Windows XP Professional service pack 2 cd. The problem is that my cd is called "New" and i just cannot work out how to give it the correct disc name.

Its a rewritable cd so how do i go about changing the name from "New" to "Windows XP Professional service pack 2" so I can complete a long overdue reinstallation

Many thanks

This is really not sounding like a legal Windows disc install so unless you can prove otherwise in PM this thread is closed.

//Edit - poster explains he has valid key for software but wants to use this download version for re-install as it has all updates slipstreamed. - open.

Thank you lopburi3 for understanding, I meant no harm but I can see why you might have been concerned.

Just to add it is actually Microsoft_Windows_XP_Professional_SP2_Integrated_April_2007 that I have borrowed and not Windows XP crystal edition

I cannot figure how to rename the disk as required by Windows during installation

"Please insert Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2"

My cd is called "NEW" and Nero doesnt allow me enough characters to rename as "Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2"

Thanks for your advice

sounds screwy ,

if SP2 is slipstreamed why is windows asking for it ????

I extracted the file as it originally came as an iso or zip and then using Nero, selected udf and it automatically assigned it the name "new". But even when I rename the disk, there are not enough characters to write "windows xp professional service pack 2"

I have gotten to thinking that maybe I should name the cd WXPVOL_EN as it originally appears on my original xp installation disks...........but its late now so will try tomorrow

Cheers

I agree. If SP2 is slipstreamed into it it will now look like Windows XP SP2 edition and should not ask for another CD. I've slipstreamed many CDs starting with Windows XP SP1 and integrated SP2 and all updates and never had it ask for another CD when doing the install. It's not the CD label that the install is looking for anyway, but the install file. Sounds like someone screwed up the slipstreaming.

Sounds like someone screwed up the slipstreaming.

Couldn't have phrased it better myself.

Yep, someone has messed up the slipstreaming. Now renaming the CD won't help you, but you might try and downloading the actual service pack 2 from microsoft. Extract it into a directory, and when install prompts you to insert the cd, browse to that directory.

Much more information is required than the OP is supplying.

1. How are you installing? Booting from the CD, full install, repair install, upgrade install or are you installing from inside the GUI (WinXP) and which option?

2. Are you sure you are not being asked for a specific file from the CD? Read the sceen properly as 99.99% of the time the answer is in front of you.

3. Can you be 100% sure that the files have been written correctly to the CD media? Have you tried a second copy?

4. Is the media CDR or CDRW? Windows installation can be very fussy if it can not read the file WHEN IT WANTS TO.

5. Has this installation been tested successfully before?

6. Add in the slipsteaming problems previously listed.

"Windows XP Professional service pack 2" is plain English for "Give me the CD with the file(s) I want." and has nothing to do with have the Volume Label matching this phase. Original media from Microsoft employs the 11 character Volume Label Joliet convention to allow compatability.

This installation will more than likely autofill a "fake" code and must be altered by contacting Microsoft in order to be validated.
