Hi All

I am  member of the Thailand Permaculture Convergence, or TPC for short. In these difficult times for farmers we have some ideas that will assist with issues such as global warming and rising costs . Before Covid we used to have weekend gatherings of people who either practice Permaculture, New theory, self sufficiency, or agroforestry. During the lockdown we do some free presentations, on how to improve your little patch of farming production. On the 6th of December at 10am,we will be presenting 3 such practitioners on the subject of soil, entitled Soil is alive dirt is dead, In English and Thai. 10:00-10:30 Meet & Greet each other, Self Introduction of People & Projects, Interest in Soil etc

30 mins-  Short introductions of those joining-  if the group is not over 30 persons- we want to allow up to one minute for each person joining to give name, where you are, if you’re connected to any Permaculture or other self-reliance or soil related movements/organization/project.

Example-  “My name is Michael Commons, I live in Phanom Sarakham, Chachoengsao,  I practice Wanakaset integrating Permaculture design and farmer wisdom with my wife and family.”

If we have more than 30 we will encourage the same, but people can write in the Chat.  

10:30 1 min-  - Virtual Toast to Soil -  After introductions- for those who wish to, we can all toast together and drink the beverage of our choice.  Perhaps a kombucha home brew, an herbal infusion, a fresh wild honey lemonade, or whatever helps bring you the spirit of community and the Permaculture ethos.

10:30 Back to the future with nature’s free energy (Chris)

The earth’s arable land has been degrading over the last 10,000 years. We need to understand why, and how we can help fix it. We can do this by learning what soil is made of, what constitutes a healthy soil, and what we can do to help rebuild it. Chris Perkins will talk about what we can learn from South American natives, who 2000 years ago turned very poor cleared jungle into lush productive gardens.  He will also talk about why modern farming additives are bad for the soil, and why weeds and insects are our friends not our enemies. He will also share some short videos on what nature grows if soil is left undisturbed for one year, five years, and indefinitely.

 

10:45 How to turn sour soil into sweet (Bronwen)

The world beneath our feet is teeming with life…and one of the secrets of that life is mycelium – the fibrous network of fungi that thread their way from plant to plant making nutrients available, improving water efficiency, adding oxygen to the soil, promoting root growth and releasing nitrogen, phosphate, and other micronutrients.

 

Bronwen Evans will share her experiences in fostering the health of the soil through encouraging beneficial microorganisms by making fermented brews of teas, bokashi compost, and cultivating companion plants.

 

11:00  Adventures of an Amateur Farmer in Overcoming Thai Taboo

Bess is going to talk about her intention, observation and practice of regenerative soil building using intuition, curiosity (constant question streams), childhood memories mixed together to become a story of communication between humans and nature. It is also a story of overcoming the Thai taboo of bringing animals into a fruit orchard.

I like the Theme: Soil is alive, dirt is dead.  In my opinion this is the most important information of our time for growers. 

 

I hope that the World Soil Day contributors/presenters are aware of and will draw on the incredible new information, emerging science and revisions in modern eco-ag practices coming out weekly from some of the active researchers and educators on the subject of "soil is alive" . 

There are some amazing webinars, YT videos, blogs and case histories  being presented weekly by Soil Food Web School, Advancing Eco Agriculture, In Search of Soil and others.  

Anyone who's approach to agriculture and horticulture, growing methods and input of fertilizer materials and pesticides is based on education and experience more that 10 years old, has some catching up to do.
