The National Dengue Control Programme (NDCP) under the Ministry of Health reported 2,423 cases of dengue fever nationwide, including five deaths, in the first six months of the year, compared to 757 cases and one death during the same period last year. Leang Rithea, director of NDCP, said yesterday that it seems to be the nation is on the verge of a dengue outbreak as there was an almost four-fold rise this year compared to the previous year.

Rithea added that delay in bringing the affected to hospital claimed two lives in Kampong Speu and Tboung Khmum provinces, and another in Preah Sihanouk province. He said that Tboung Khmum, Kampong Speu, Preah Sihanouk, Kandal, Siem Reap, Kampong Chhnang and Banteay Meanchey are the worst hit provinces.

“NDCP have already started fumigation process to destroy mosquito breeding places,” Rithea said, adding that a collective effort by both the public and authorities was essential in stopping the spread of  the disease which is caused by an Aedes mosquito bite.
