A member of the Thai Senate says other names could be put forward for the PM role and that the Move Forward leader doesn’t have to be the sole candidate. His comment is actually reiterating what would actually happen for the nomination and election of a prime minister under Thailand’s 2017 constitution.

 

According to a Bangkok Post report, Akanit Muensawad says if additional candidates are nominated for the top job, senators are not required to vote for Pita Limjaroenrat.

 

The senator was responding to Move Forward supporters, who are piling pressure on senators not to thwart Pita’s bid for PM. Akanit says if more names are put forward for the role, senators can vote for the person they think is best suited, in terms of both capability and ethics.

This 'senator' is a general who isn't happy about Future Forward controlling the army budget and expenditure as well as banning conscription.

 

Of course, he is impartial - Not!  ????

Prawit - Prayut?

Simple solution if pita is a no go is to nominate prawit.

 

It may sound strange but there is no legal way he could survive a vote of no confidence.  Meaning PT does not get thaksin home nor do they get power.  Prawit would be a straw man because he can not get a budget passed or any real legislation.

Let's look at the number of votes for Party List MPs in the last election:

MF - 14,438,851

PT- 10,962, 524

UTNP( Prayuth)- 4,766,408

Bhumjaithai - 1,138,202

Democrats- 925, 349

Prachachart ( Southern Party) -602,645

Palang Pracharat ( Pravit) -537625

So if we take the proposed coalition we have MF, PT and Prachachart, totalling over 26 million votes

Military backed parties total over 7 million votes

Number of votes for senators- 0.0 recurring.

26 million to 7 million

yes but you can't just add all other parties to MF....PT can form a majority without MF. And they'll happily do it if they get an excuse for doing it.

Before all this sorted mess is said and done, I've a strong feeling that someone is going to intervene and declare it all nil and void - select a temporary interim government until a new election can be settled upon. 

 

Just a hunch.

Not easy for them to do that. They campaigned as a party supporting democracy against military interference in politics.

Teaming up with Prayuth's or Pravit's parties could see a major backlash against them.

Impossible to justify to the public 

It is amazing that unelected Senators are interfering in the formation of a government, by publicly speaking about whatever happens to lurch into their brains.

General Akanit Muansawad is close to sedition in his attempts to influence who gets nominated for PM. His job as an appointed Senator is to debate candidates IN SESSION, and vote.

Talking of the Dems, I see Abhisit and Korn are being mentioned as potential leaders but both are from Bangkok whilst nearly all their 25 MPs are from the South.

The senator is absolutely right in saying "..... other names could ........ be put forward  ..... and the Move Forward leader doesn’t have to be the sole candidate". 

The statement is correct so best we leave it to the MFP people who got elected to sort out that problem as they will have to chose the leader under whom they want to work. But, as said, the rhetoric has changed in the right direction!

No they didn't. The ballot didn't say "who do you want as PM", and even if it did Move Forward didn't win an absolute majority.

 

Anyway, it's just common sense that there should be more than one option on the table for PM.
