Leveraging postage stamps as a soft power to boost the economy

For the past several years, postal service providers around the world have faced new challenges as digitalization has taken hold, a situation that significantly accelerated during the Covid-19 pandemic. The internet and social media platforms that make communication today much easier and faster have brought traditional letter writing almost to a halt, reducing the demand for so-called ‘snail mail’ and postage stamps.

Like its peers around the world, Thailand Post has felt the pinch.

After having spent two decades on and off in Thailand, I still have to see a Thai writing a letter, or a postcard, or even saying that they like to write/have written postcards, or private letters.

They have a presence in every corner of Thailand, but didn't take advantage of that. They missed an opportunity to compete with the likes of Kerry, Flash, Lalamove, etc.

Now they're looking to sell "special edition" postage stamps to philatelists (I'm not denying that some of those stamps are worthy of collecting).

Jeese.

Just what Pattaya needs.

Philatelists cruising Beach road late at night.

Nah.  I'm sure the RTP will stamp it out.

They've been doing this in the UK for years.

Most of the "special packs" are worth less than the face value of the stamps. Modern stamps may be nice to look at but they are not an investment.
