Could Canada Join the EU?

Featured Replies

This is mind-blowing.

Trade tariff turmoil Pushes Canada to Rethink US Ties

With friends like Trump, who needs enemies?

Will Trump's policies push Canada to join the EU?

That's not a serious option.

However, they already have a trade deal. They could extend it, participate in joint R&D programs, etc...

The lesson of recent events (Covid pandemic, Ukraine invasion, Trump's expected policies) for any country or Union, is that it's dangerous to depend too much on one country. One can expect the EU, Canada, China, etc... to reduce their dependence on the U.S. Same for other countries to reduce their dependence on China.

The future dominant strategy will likely be to manage to get a more balanced and more diversified portfolio of economic partners.

Why not? Canada has already adopted the EU's let'em all come immigration policy.

Certainly possible. Canada, the EU, the UK and China could form an Orwellian totalitarian alliance. After all, they seem in ideological lockstep wanting freedom of speech banned, draconian censorship  and more unaccountable elites and leaders.

Hopefully the US under Trump will be a shining beacon of freedom and success, so the well informed citizens of the above countries should have a lightbulb moment and slam on the anchors before they slip into full blown communism.

My God are people ever so fearful of totalitarian govts trampling on them.

Where does this excessive fear come from?

Most of these western countries are generally safe, with decent access to education and healthcare and decent to good to very good standard of living, depending how hard-working you are.

Most of the crap we experience in life is what people around us do to us.

Snooze factor 35.

Doesn't Canada have enough problems to deal with currently without having to cope with the buffoon, Verhofstadt's support?

75% of Canada's trade is with the US. Unless it can somehow manage to become a member of the EU, while at the same time remain a member of USMCA, it's a non-starter.

Canada leaving USMCA would be as bone headed a decision as the UK leaving the EU.

Sorry to pour cold water on this, but Australia first! It's already member of Eurovision ear piercing contest, so it certainly should be given EU membership before Canada!

Its not going to happen and even thinking it might happen marks one as an amateur in geopolitics.
