Too bad. It is nice and clean and profesional looking and it has a good menu, but the food is absolutely tasteless and it is ALWAYS empty.

Does anyone have an idea how they can keep staying open in such an expensive spot? Why doesn't the owner get someone to help him make better food (Hire the owner of the Duke's to do it)?

as always, the end product is only as good as the ingredients...where to get quality pastrami or corned beef in BKK? On another thread I described a delicious deli corned beef sandwich purchased recently in downtown Phila with local (ie. authentic) ingredients...cost me USD7.00. Imagine what the same would cost in BKK?

Sounds like so many businesses in Thailand, but don't bother looking for answers on this board (unless someone here knows that the owner of that shop is the building owner's brother-in-law, or something like that).

Not sure how many locations New York Deli has in Thailand, but some owners set up places in very expensive sites simply to advertise.......a high traffic site in a prime location leads to lots of exposure.......so you may not be making a big profit or any profit at the place with the expensive rent, but the exposure leads to more profits at the other sites with less expensive rent. Just a theory.......but if the food is not good and/or overpriced, forget it. In the long run it will not make it. Oh, how I would love a real corned beef sandwich.

who is Duke?

He owns one of Chiang Mai's best restaurants and makes pretty good pastrami rueben sandwiches.

I know that he will do consulting for a plane ticket, a hotel room and a small fee. He seems to spend a lot of time showing restaurants in Patong beach what they are doing wrong.

New York Deli was one of the first franchises to go belly up in Hua Hin earlier this year. Now the space is occupied by McDonalds fine Scottish cuisine.

I just don't understand how someone could spend all that money and get lthe ocation and ALL the visuals right, but completely ignore the taste of the food. That place would be a GOLD MINE if the food was authentic.

I have a friend who just loves that place. He eats a bagel with lox and cream cheese there every morning when he is in Bangkok. So it apparently has a few loyal customers. Must be people without taste buds.

I agree that the food is tasteless and a waste of a potentially delicious meal in Bangkok. Just head down the road a block and have the Reuben at the Landmark Hotel cafe instead. Get it to go and you can eat at a reasonable price -they charge like 150 baht for a Coke. It's big enough for two fat farangs to share for a lunch, and comes with a serving of really good fries.

these type of establishments usually give 25% of profits to the landowner, after paying a non refundable entrance fee called 'sengk'... a chinese style of doing business

I've even heard that theres some lassies that will fetch them for you. from some of the finer drinking establishments...Allegedly.. :o

Are a lot of franchises going belly up in Hua Hin? Can you provide a list of names? Why are they failing........bad food, overpriced, no customers, overall economy?

Fred has done well in many ventures but IMHO New York Deli is not one of them. I was told...He started New York Deli after we would not co-brand Coffee World a Subway store near Silom ( we declined as it was too close to another Subway store across the street) We had already co-branded at the Sukhumvit Soi 4 location and with the amount of volume he saw us do. The story goes...He felt " I can do that" but as he has found out, coffee and sandwiches are two different things.

This location has since closed with both the Coffee World and New York Deli he had there ( it was next to the Rodi Boy)

When one of their managers called my wife the first week and asked " Everyone is asking for pastrami. What is it?" I didn't think they would do very well as "New York Deli."

However, I must add...New York Deli seems to do ok at the airport.

I wish that someone who knows what they are doing would buy it. The whole set-up is great. If the food was like a real Deli, it would be packed all of the time!
