Cambodia denies Thai mine claims, defends peace accord

Cambodia has issued a firm rebuttal to Thailand’s decision to suspend a recently signed peace agreement, following a landmine blast near the disputed border that injured three Thai soldiers.

In a late-night statement on Monday, Cambodia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed “deep concern” over Thai claims that new mines had been planted near Phnom Trop, close to the Temple of Preah Vihear. Thai officials cited the 10 November explosion as grounds for halting the Joint Declaration signed in Kuala Lumpur on 26 October and cancelling the planned release of 18 Cambodian soldiers held in Thai custody.

Cambodia categorically denied the allegations, stating that the minefields in question are remnants of civil wars from the 1970s and 1980s.

The ministry stressed that large sections of the border remain uncleared due to rugged terrain and unresolved demarcation, making accidental detonations possible.

“Cambodia has never used any new landmines and will never do so,” the statement read, reaffirming the country’s commitment to the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention.

The Joint Declaration, signed by both prime ministers and witnessed by US President Donald Trump and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, was hailed as a breakthrough in regional diplomacy. It aimed to ease military tensions and foster cooperation along the Cambodia-Thailand frontier.

Cambodia’s foreign ministry said it was dismayed by Thailand’s abrupt suspension of the accord, noting that the agreement had received widespread international support and symbolised a new chapter in bilateral relations.

The incident has reignited tensions between the two neighbours, with Cambodia urging continued commitment to the peace process despite the setback. As diplomatic channels remain open, both sides face renewed pressure to prevent further escalation along the border.

ThaiVisa, it's also in French

Thailand - the hub of military misinformation and propaganda!

Though neither government should be trusted and their declarations are always questionable, in this particular instance I would question Cambodia before I would question Thailand.

When you have a nation that has a three decade-long history of a genocidal, land grabbing, multi-billionaire leader (stolen money) who is a former Pol Pot high official and has appointed his son in his stead, that does not create a foundation for trust.

3 people wounded one shot dead by thai military.

Trumps, peace .....DEAD

Thailand accuses Cambodia of opening fire to provoke retaliation along the border
Cambodia, however, accuses Thai troops of firing on civilians in a border village, injuring five people. Bangkok denies the allegations, insisting that Cambodia initiated the shooting in an effort to escalate tensions.

[Update] The Thai Army confirmed a brief border incident on November 12 after Cambodian troops reportedly fired into Thai territory near Ban Nong Ya Kaeo in Sa Kaeo’s Khok Sung District.

Maj. Gen. Winthai Suvaree, Army spokesperson, said the Army Operations Center received a report at 4 p.m. from the Burapha Task Force that Cambodian soldiers had opened fire. Thai forces took cover and responded with warning shots in accordance with rules of engagement. The exchange lasted about 10 minutes before the situation returned to normal, with no Thai casualties reported.

Thai Army Must Be Outright Honest in Dealing With Cambodia and the Thai Public

By Pravit Rojanaphruk
@PravitR

I strongly reprimand the Royal Thai Army for initially reporting that they did not return fire, and then admitting an hour later that they did return fire, while also claiming that Cambodian soldiers used Cambodian civilians as human shields. This issue does not just affect the credibility of the Royal Thai Army, but also impacts Thailand's credibility in the eyes of the world.

I also express my condolences for the 5 injured Cambodian civilians, and I call on the Cambodian people not to be tricked into being used as human shields (if this was indeed the case). As for the Royal Thai Army, they should apologize and publicly explain why, if they truly knew that Cambodian civilians were being used as human shields, they chose to return fire with live ammunition nonetheless.
UPDATE; Cambodia's Kiripost reports that one civilian has died.

One of the Cambodian civilians injured when Thai troops opened fire with live rounds this afternoon has died, while Cambodians troops at the scene are unarmed and have not retaliated or exchanged fire, say authorities.

The familar rhetoric repeatly happened--The Thai Army says Cambodian soldiers opened fire, with Thai forces returning warning shots. The Thai Army reports zero casualties and will provide further details later.
