Peter Murrell, the former chief executive of the Scottish National Party (SNP), has been accused of embezzling more than £459,000 from party funds over a period spanning more than a decade, according to court papers released ahead of a preliminary hearing.

Murrell, who was married to former first minister Nicola Sturgeon until 2023, is due to appear at the High Court in Glasgow next week. The charges allege that between August 2010 and January 2023 he misappropriated £459,046.49 in SNP funds and used the money to purchase high-value personal items.

Court documents claim Murrell bought a £124,550 Niesmann and Bischoff motorhome for private use using party funds and created false sales paperwork to make the purchase appear as a legitimate SNP expense. He is also accused of using £57,500 of party money toward the purchase of an £81,000 Jaguar I-Pace in 2019.

Additional allegations include the use of SNP funds for luxury goods, jewellery, cosmetics, and retail purchases from Apple and German retailer Manufactum, supported by allegedly false invoices. The documents also state that Murrell used party funds to pay a personal parking fine.

Murrell served as SNP chief executive for 22 years before resigning in 2023. He was arrested that year as part of Operation Branchform, the ongoing Police Scotland investigation into party finances, and was formally charged with embezzlement in April 2024. He previously appeared at Edinburgh Sheriff Court, made no plea, and was released on bail.

Sturgeon was also arrested and questioned during the investigation but was later cleared of any wrongdoing. In her 2024 memoir, she described shock and distress over Murrell’s arrest following a police search of their Glasgow home.
