garro Posted August 30, 2007 Posted August 30, 2007 I was just wondering if anybody can recommend a cheap printer. It will be the third one I've bought in just over a year. I have a good Brother one but the ink is expensive and hard to get here in Phitsanulok province. I just want something for printing documents as I can still use the Brother for fancy stuff. I also want one that I will be able to get the ink refilled anywhere. Are all printers compatible with the Mac?
Firefoxx Posted August 30, 2007 Posted August 30, 2007 If you want to print only documents, get a laser (and not a very cheap one). Inkjets look cheap, but once you start printing regularly, they will cost you in ink. Lasers (the more expensive ones) will be very cheap on a per page basis. The main reason that printers (both lasers and inkjets) can be sold for so cheap is that the manufacturers are getting their profits from the consumables (ink/toner). Any printer that costs less than around 5,000 baht (and some that cost more) normally falls into this category. Be careful about getting ink refills. If you don't use the printer regularly (as in every few days), the different composition of the ink refills will usually lead to a clogged head, which usually means a time for a new printer, since fixing that costs about the same as a new printer.

That's all I ever use and it costs me half as much.
TexasRanger Posted August 30, 2007 Posted August 30, 2007 Most things are mac compatible now. I have a Brother DCP model and it plain sucks, it has an auto clean feature that wastes ink and it cannot be disabled. Nightmare.

Like TexasRanger I have a Brother DCP and nobody here or in the city will refill my cartridges for me as they say the Brother cartridges are too difficult to open.

I do buy the cheaper non brother brand cartridges from Office Centre but the printers still drinks it, my HP printer back home is much better.
peter991 Posted August 30, 2007 Posted August 30, 2007 I don't think you can go past a Canon laser printer. Quite a good network in Thailand too. I use a Canon LBP3200 for day-to-day office document printing. About 6000 to 10,000 pages from one cartridge. Before that, I was using a HP buble-jet - and it was costing easily 1400 baht a week for ink refills at Cartridge World. Peter
RKASA Posted August 30, 2007 Posted August 30, 2007 (edited) The big c phitsanilok has a refill place and its cheap 40Baht, but my carts cost 780 so its a deal. But as was said before if I don't use daily the refills plug up. I run a test page everyother day seems to keep it going. Mines a 2000 baht lexmark x1250 all in one. Its not great but works for my needs. It was a closeout at Tesco about year ago. thats a x1270 not 50 Edited August 30, 2007 by RKASA
cdnvic Posted August 30, 2007 Posted August 30, 2007 The Brother's self cleaning is actually a good thing when the printer isn't used often. I've gone a year and a half on cartridges so it's not using that much ink really.
PeaceBlondie Posted August 30, 2007 Posted August 30, 2007 All I know is that I bought an H-P Deskjet 3745 almost four years ago, and have no trouble whether I use it every day or once a week. The cheap refills work for me, and the technician showed us how to soak the outlet part in warm water if it clogs. Don't you have to use a printer at nearly commercial levels (thousand copies per week) to come out ahead on laser jet printers, or have the prices changed? I only paid about 2,300 for my printer, and it works fine for amateur use. We use hypodermic syringes to inject the ink into the cartridge. Perhaps this is all wrong, but it works.
britmaveric Posted August 30, 2007 Posted August 30, 2007 Lexmark -- got one for 10quid. Ink cost - 15quid, go figure.
RueFang Posted August 30, 2007 Posted August 30, 2007 I have a HP and a Lexmark. The Lexmark was about 1000 baht and a ink refill box is about 500 baht (black) 650 colour. 2 years after I bought it, it crapped itself but the place I bought it from replaced it for 500 baht! It's super basic but cheap and refills last forever. The HP is definitely a lot more expensive for the ink and goes through it much faster.
ricklev Posted August 30, 2007 Posted August 30, 2007 Canon PIXMA MP160 Consumer Reports best buy for budget all in one. 2300 baht. Very happy with it.
